Pula travel guide and discussion

The Istrian Peninsula is a treasure trove of history, nature, and culture, and Pula is one of its most iconic ancient cities. This itinerary focuses on the most famous Temple of Augustus, along with the romance of Rovinj and the majestic mountain town of Motovin, offering a full-day, layered experience that effortlessly bridges culture, architecture, and nature. 🔆Suggested Itinerary In the morning, we recommend starting in the old town of Rovinj. Its narrow cobblestone alleys are crisscrossed, and the colorful houses are particularly charming in the sunlight. The Church of San Euphemia, perched on a hillside, offers the best panoramic view of Rovinj. From the top of the church tower, the sea and the old town blend seamlessly, making it a perfect spot for photos. Around midday, head to Pula. The Temple of Augustus (Address: Forum b.b, 52100, Pula) is a must-see. With long opening hours (08:00 - 21:30) and excellent flexibility, its exterior is remarkably well-preserved, a rare authentic example of an ancient Roman temple. Nearby is the magnificent Pula Arena, a testament to a thousand years of history. It's recommended to visit the temple first, then leisurely stroll through the nearby squares and arena to soak in Pula's ancient Roman atmosphere. In the afternoon, consider driving or taking a ride to Motovyn, a hilltop town on the Istrian Peninsula. The journey is picturesque, with expansive green fields and vineyards along the way. Motovyn is small and charming, with colorful stone houses built along the hillside. Climbing the city walls offers panoramic views of the entire peninsula and is a superb spot for watching the sunset. 📸Recommended Spots · Rovinj Church of San Euphemia bell tower overlooking the ancient city and coastline · The antique square in front of the Temple of Augustus in Pula · The interplay of light and shadow on the arches inside the Pula Arena · Motovyn hilltop walls offering a bird's-eye view of the city and distant mountains 👍Tips 1. It's recommended to depart early, as the various attractions on the Istrian Peninsula are approximately a half-hour drive apart, allowing for a comfortable pace. 2. Wear comfortable hiking shoes. Rovinj and Motoven have cobblestone streets, which can be slippery, so be careful. 3. There are many cafes around the Temple of Augustus and the Pula Arena, suitable for resting and replenishing supplies before continuing your journey. 4. Motoven is famous for its truffle cuisine; consider trying a local restaurant for dinner. ⚠️Important Notes · Some streets in the town are narrow, so be especially careful about parking if you're driving. It's recommended to park in parking lots outside the town. · During peak season, there are many tourists, so arrive early at popular photo spots to get better photos without crowds. Hey fam! Sardinia is one of those destinations that almost looks unreal. The transparent turquoise water, pale sand, hidden coves and dramatic cliffs could easily belong to a tropical island, yet the traditional villages, ancient archaeological sites and distinctive cuisine make it unmistakably Italian. What surprised me most is the island’s variety. One day can be spent swimming in calm, shallow water; the next can include a mountain hike, a visit to a prehistoric Nuragic site or dinner in a small inland village. Sardinia is not a destination to experience from a single resort, and it deserves much more than a rushed weekend. How Many Days Do You Need? Seven days provide enough time to explore one region comfortably. Ten to fourteen days are better if you want to combine two different parts of the island. Sardinia is much larger than many travellers expect. Trying to see Cagliari, Alghero, Costa Smeralda and the Gulf of Orosei during the same short trip means spending too much time driving. My strongest recommendation is to choose one main area and explore it properly: Southern Sardinia is ideal for Cagliari, Chia, Villasimius, Pula and archaeological attractions. Northeastern Sardinia is best for Olbia, Costa Smeralda, San Teodoro and the La Maddalena Archipelago. Northwestern Sardinia offers Alghero, Bosa, Stintino, La Pelosa and access to Asinara. Eastern Sardinia is the right choice for Cala Gonone, Baunei, Cala Goloritzé and boat trips through the Gulf of Orosei. Best Time To Visit 📆 June and September are probably the best months for most travellers. The weather is generally warm enough for swimming, restaurants and tourism services are operating, and the beaches are usually less overwhelming than in August. Late May can also be excellent for sightseeing, road trips and hiking, although the sea may feel cooler. July and August offer the liveliest atmosphere but also bring higher accommodation prices, busy roads and crowded beaches. During the hottest months, visit beaches early, have a long lunch or rest during the middle of the day, and explore villages in the late afternoon. Choosing The Right Airport✈️ Sardinia has three principal airports, and choosing the one closest to your accommodation can save several hours of driving. Cagliari Airport is the best gateway for the south. The airport train station is approximately a five-minute walk from the terminal, and trains reach central Cagliari in around five to seven minutes. The official airport website currently lists a single fare of €1.30, with services running at an average frequency of about 20 minutes during operating hours. Olbia Airport is the most convenient option for Costa Smeralda, San Teodoro, Palau and much of northeastern Sardinia. The airport provides local and regional bus connections, taxis and car-rental services. Alghero Airport is useful for Alghero, Sassari, Bosa and Stintino. It is approximately ten kilometres from Alghero city centre, and bus stops and taxi ranks are located near the terminal entrances. Before booking a flight solely because it is cheaper, calculate the cost and travel time of reaching your final accommodation. A low-cost flight to the opposite side of the island may result in an expensive transfer or a long drive. Getting Around Sardinia✨ Renting a car is the easiest way to explore the island independently. Buses and trains serve the main cities and some popular destinations, but many beaches, rural restaurants and small villages are difficult to reach without private transport. Sardinia’s tourism authority specifically recommends a car, motorcycle or bicycle for travellers who want maximum freedom. Book rental vehicles early during summer, particularly if you need an automatic car. Before leaving the rental office: · Photograph every side of the vehicle. · Check the fuel policy. · Confirm whether unpaved roads are permitted. · Inspect the tyres. · Save the emergency number. · Ask whether the accommodation is located inside a restricted traffic zone. Do not assume every scenic road is easy. Some coastal routes are narrow, winding and poorly lit after sunset. Allow more time than online maps suggest and avoid planning long cross-island drives immediately after a beach day. Beaches You Should Not Miss🏖️ Sardinia has enough spectacular beaches to make choosing difficult. The best option depends on where you are staying and the type of experience you want. La Pelosa🫶🏼 La Pelosa, near Stintino, is famous for fine white sand, shallow turquoise water and views towards its historic tower. The surrounding landforms and islands help shelter the bay from the open sea. Do not arrive without checking the official booking system. A beach mat is also required beneath towels to help protect the sand, and removing sand or natural materials is prohibited. Cala Goloritzé😍 Cala Goloritzé is one of Sardinia’s most dramatic coves, surrounded by limestone cliffs and reached by a hiking route through the Supramonte di Baunei. Access must be reserved through the authorised Heart of Sardinia system. The listed 2026 price is €7. This is not a casual beach walk. Wear hiking shoes, carry plenty of water and save enough energy for the uphill return. Flip-flops are not suitable. Gulf Of Orosei✅ A boat excursion from Cala Gonone or Santa Maria Navarrese is one of the most memorable activities on the island. ⚠️Before booking, ask about: · The number of passengers. · The amount of shade. · Swimming-stop duration. · Whether food and water are included. · The cancellation policy. · Whether beach-landing reservations are covered. · The type of boat used. Smaller boats often provide a more personal experience, while larger vessels may offer better stability and facilities. Chia And Villasimius✨ Southern Sardinia has some of the island’s most accessible beach areas. Chia is known for dunes, lagoons and long stretches of clear water, while Villasimius combines organised beaches, coves and marine scenery. These areas are good choices for travellers staying in Cagliari who want day trips without crossing the entire island. Costa Smeralda And La Maddalena☺️ Costa Smeralda is Sardinia’s most glamorous area, but you do not need to stay in an expensive resort to enjoy the coastline. For a full-day experience, take a boat trip through the La Maddalena Archipelago. Check exactly which islands and swimming stops are included, as itineraries vary according to the operator and sea conditions. The Best Towns And Villages⛰️ Cagliari Cagliari is more than an arrival point. Explore the elevated Castello district, walk through the narrow historic streets, visit Bastione di Saint Remy and spend an evening in the Marina neighbourhood. Poetto Beach is close enough to combine city sightseeing with time by the sea. Alghero Alghero has one of Sardinia’s most atmospheric historic centres. Its stone walls, seafront promenade and Catalan cultural influence make it noticeably different from other island towns. Walk along the city walls before sunset and remain for dinner after day visitors leave. Best Photography Spots📸 La Pelosa looks best early in the morning, when the water is calm and fewer visitors are standing near the shoreline. Use the Aragonese tower as a background rather than photographing only the sea. In Alghero, walk along the defensive walls during golden hour and photograph the coastline through the historic towers and stone openings. Bosa is especially photogenic from the opposite side of the river, where the colourful houses can be captured rising towards the castle. At Cala Goloritzé, the limestone pinnacle and natural arch provide the most distinctive compositions. Keep electronics protected from water and avoid climbing unstable rocks for a better angle. In Cagliari, photograph the city from Bastione di Saint Remy and look for flamingos around the Molentargius wetlands without approaching or disturbing them. What To Eat In Sardinia🍔 Sardinian cuisine deserves as much attention as the coastline. It combines seafood traditions with pastoral dishes, handmade pasta, bread, cheeses and recipes that vary between regions. Try culurgiones, filled pasta parcels commonly associated with Ogliastra and traditionally prepared with potato, cheese and mint. Order malloreddus, small Sardinian pasta often served with sausage and tomato sauce. Taste fregola, toasted pasta beads that are frequently paired with clams or seafood. Pane carasau is a thin, crisp bread traditionally connected with Sardinian shepherding culture. Bottarga, cured fish roe, may be grated over pasta or served in thin slices. The island’s official tourism authority also highlights pecorino cheeses, pane frattau, lorighittas, roast lamb, seafood, almond desserts and local wines among Sardinia’s culinary traditions. Pair seafood with a chilled Vermentino, or try Cannonau with meat. Mirto, a myrtle-based liqueur, is commonly served after a meal. Unique Food Tips🌯 Book at least one dinner at an agriturismo. These countryside establishments often serve a fixed sequence of traditional dishes made with regional ingredients. Arrive hungry, because meals can include several starters, pasta, meat, dessert, wine and digestifs. At seafood restaurants, ask whether fresh fish is priced by weight. Request the approximate final cost before confirming your order. Restaurants directly beside famous beaches often charge more for convenience. A village ten or fifteen minutes inland may offer better food, larger portions and a more local atmosphere. Do not expect dinner everywhere at 6:00 p.m. Many restaurants follow later Italian dining hours, particularly during summer. Tips That Can Make The Trip Much Easier🫶🏼 Carry cash for parking machines, small cafés and remote services, even though card payment is widely available in larger towns. Buy water before visiting isolated beaches. Some coves have no facilities, shade or reliable mobile coverage. Keep one day flexible. Wind can make one coastline uncomfortable while the opposite side remains calm. Reserve regulated beaches, boat trips and rental cars before travelling during the peak season. Check parking rules carefully. A space that looks informal may still require payment through a machine or mobile application. Pack water shoes for rocky entries, but also bring proper trainers or hiking footwear for trails. Use reef-conscious sun protection and avoid applying oily products immediately before entering clear, enclosed coves. Things To 🚫 Do not attempt to explore the entire island in one week. Avoid taking sand, shells, stones or other natural materials. Removing sand from Sardinian beaches is prohibited and can damage already fragile coastal environments. Avoid entering the water when local warnings, strong wind or rough waves indicate unsafe conditions. Do not depend on the final bus of the day without checking the latest seasonal schedule. Avoid driving after drinking wine or mirto. Rural accommodation can be far from restaurants, so arrange a designated driver or stay overnight. Do not enter private paths, gardens or terraces simply because they offer a good photograph. Final tips ✅ Sardinia is one of the most rewarding destinations in the Mediterranean, but it is best experienced slowly. Choose one or two regions, rent a car, leave space for changing weather and avoid turning every day into a race between famous beaches. The island’s beauty is undeniable, but the most memorable moments may be less obvious: a long countryside lunch, an empty village street after sunset, a plate of handmade pasta or a quiet cove discovered after taking the wrong road. Come for the turquoise sea, but stay for the food, villages, landscapes and distinctive culture that make Sardinia feel like a country of its own. #travel2026 #couplestrip #travel

Perched on Croatia's Dalmatian coast, Zadar is a city where more than two thousand years of history unfold within its ancient stone walls. Once ruled by the Venetian Republic and long standing on the frontier against the Ottoman Empire, the old town is a remarkable blend of Roman heritage, medieval fortifications, Renaissance architecture, and coastal charm. ✈ I drove around Croatia during the National Day holiday, covering most of the classic scenes in an 11-day itinerary. In the last issue, I talked about the Zagreb-Split line, and in this issue, I will share the rest of the itinerary. 👑Šibenik (Pictures 3-5) The next stop from Split is Šibenik, a 2-hour drive, but I arranged for a day because it passes through Kaštela (Picture 1) and Trogir (Picture 2) on the way. 🔺Kaštela has a castle in the water, which is also a Game of Thrones filming location. 🔺Trogir didn't leave a good impression on me, too many tourists at noon, the city layout is very similar to Split. The cathedral is not expensive and worth a visit. Be sure to park outside the old town (1.5 euros per hour), 4 euros per hour in the old town. 🔺Šibenik has fewer people and is a "mountain city" with many medieval streets different from other cities, which is very suitable for staying overnight and strolling around. The Šibenik Cathedral is also a World Cultural Heritage site. We didn't go in, which is a bit regrettable. 👑Rovinj (Pictures 6-7) It takes nearly 5 hours from Šibenik to Rovinj. 🔺Rovinj and Venice face each other across the sea, and the old town is all colorful. However, the area is very small, and you can finish walking around in 2 hours. 🔺I recommend two places to stay, the first is the island opposite the old town, Maistra Select Island Hotel Katarina, which has the best view of the old town, and you can snorkel by the sea. 🔺The other is the Maistra Select Family Hotel Amarin, a 5-minute drive north. Similar to clubmed, breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all-inclusive, with childcare included. All kinds of entertainment facilities are free. There is a long coastline outside the hotel, where you can swim in the sea and overlook the old town. Even if you don't stay, you can come here to play. 👑Pula & Poreč (Pictures 8-11, Pictures 12-13) We stayed in Rovinj for 2 nights and went to Pula and Poreč one day. 🔺Pula has one of the only six Roman amphitheaters in the world, which is very well preserved. The amphitheater ticket is 30 euros, which is worth a visit, and the parking lot next to it is free on weekends. 🔺You can walk from the amphitheater to the Temple of Augustus, about 20 minutes, the exterior is enough, it's not worth going inside. 🔺Poreč has the World Cultural Heritage Euphrasian Basilica complex. This church built in the 4th century AD has a simple exterior, but the mosaics inside are quite stunning. After a quick tour, this attraction also takes 2 hours and is worth a special trip. 👑Samobor (Pictures 14-15) Because the car was returned to Zagreb Airport on the last day, the hotel was booked here the day before (20 minutes from the airport). 🔺Quite a surprise, the architectural style is very fairy tale, colorful houses, creek wooden bridges, windows full of flowers, very much like the fairy-tale towns on the German-French border. 🔺The cost of living is low, and there is the best specialty cake in Croatia.

I came to Croatia for the first time when I was a kid🇭🇷This country is called Yugoslavia. I was very impressed by the 16 Lakes National Park. I came to PLITVICE LAKE National Park in October and found that the tickets purchased on site were only 10 euros. Why did I buy them online first? 23 euros😡There is also a limit on the number of people, which is even more outrageous. I found that there are some entrances where you can sneak in without buying a ticket🔥It is really to guard against gentlemen and not villains🤬 Transportation strategy: Drive your own car🚗, it is more maneuverable Must-visit attractions: 16 Lakes National Park It takes about 5 hours to walk up and down the lake, take Route H Enter the No. 2 parking lot, first take a car to ST3 and walk to P2, take a boat from P2 to P3, then walk to ST1, take a car back to No. 2, and then walk to the parking lot Recommended hotel: This time I stayed at Guest House Slavica, which cost less than 1,000 per night and has a shared kitchen👍 #familytravel #croatia #PLITVICELAKENationalPark #Croatia #Croatia #CroatiaTravel #16Lake #Plitvice Lakes National Park 2023/10

#tripblazers #croatia #pula The highlight of my trip to Croatia as a theatre teacher was visiting the Roman Arena in Pula. Unlike the Colosseum in Rome, this theatre has all four pillars completely intact which makes for a beautiful stunning picture. You can also visit the halls underneath the main arena, to see where the animals and amphoras were stored. Try not to visit during the heat of the day at noon or you might get toasted!

#travelsafetytips Pula’s amphitheatre is one of the best-preserved Roman arenas anywhere, and it is still used for concerts and film festivals. In the early morning, before the tours arrive, the stone is cool and the arena shadow falls across the central ring like a slow sundial. I climbed to the upper tier alone and looked across the wall to the Adriatic, which was doing its usual job of looking expensive. Stay in a hotel or guesthouse inside the old town. Pula is compact and walkable, and the evening light on the stone is the main event. The airport is close, and the bus and ferry terminals are easy to reach. Use licensed taxis at night and keep valuables in a zipped bag. Safety basics: the arena stairs are steep and uneven. Hold the railings, wear proper shoes, and do not climb on the walls or barriers—they are fragile and exposed. The Adriatic across the wall is the point. Stand in the upper tier and look out, then look back at the stone and try to decide which is older. Solo travel here is safe, quiet and gently spectacular. You can sit on a stone seat, eat an ice cream, and feel like you are at a very small, very old event.

I have the pleasure of staying at this splendid resort several times a year. Usually, I go solely and exclusively for diving, but this time, thanks to the lovely and talented animator Martina, I decided to enjoy a few days embracing the village tourist life—and I had a fantastic time!

If you’ve come to France, wouldn’t it be a shame to just see Paris and go back? Colorful Renaissance alleys, secret passages hidden between buildings, city views from the hilltop, and even French gastronomy! This is Lyon, a charming city in southeastern France. Let me introduce you to the charms of Lyon, which has an atmosphere quite different from Paris. ✨ 1️⃣ Fourvière Hill — A viewpoint to take in Lyon at a glance 🏙️ The first place I recommend visiting if you arrive in Lyon! Take the funicular up the hill to admire the panoramic view of Lyon, where red roofs blend harmoniously with the river. The Fourvière Cathedral, famous for its magnificent interior decorations, is also located on the hill. · 📸 Panoramic view overlooking the entire city · ⛪ Magnificent mosaic decorations inside the cathedral · 🌅 Enjoy the view until sunset if the weather is good Travel Tip: It is a good itinerary to climb the hill to admire the view, then take the funicular down to the Old Town. 2️⃣ Vieux Lyon — Alleys filled with medieval European vibes 🏘️ If you want to capture the most atmospheric photos in Lyon, head to Vieux Lyon! With Renaissance-era buildings, cobblestone alleys, and old shops lining the streets, it feels as if you have traveled back in time to Europe. This area is one of Lyon's historic districts included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. In particular, as you walk through the alleys, you may come across "Traboules," hidden passageways leading into the interiors of buildings. 📸 Instead of just visiting designated tourist spots and moving on, try exploring every nook and cranny of the alleys. There is a certain fun in discovering unexpectedly beautiful places! 3️⃣ La Croix-Rousse — Lyon's famous trick art murals 🎨 If you love murals and unique photo spots, don't miss the La Croix-Rousse area. Lyon is also famous for its large murals found throughout the city. Among them, the Mur des Canuts is well-known for its massive murals that depict entire buildings as if they were actual streets. 𝓟𝓾𝓵𝓪 𝓐𝓻𝓮𝓷𝓪 ✨ Echoes of Rome from 2,000 years ago, An amphitheater by the Adriatic Sea, The stone walls have weathered the ages, yet still stand tall! Pula Arena Zagreb

Stepping into Istria feels like discovering a sun-drenched Mediterranean mosaic where Venetian Gothic bell towers rise above rolling green hills, ancient Roman amphitheaters guard the coast, and the air is thick with the scent of pine and wild truffles. Tucked away in the northwestern corner of Croatia, this enchanting heart-shaped peninsula is world-famous for its medieval hilltop fortress towns, world-class olive oils, and a rich culinary heritage blending Italian flair with Slavic warmth. Strolling through the quiet cobblestone alleys of a stone hilltop village in the golden late afternoon light, with the sparkling blue Adriatic Sea gleaming in the distance, was an utterly captivating and soulful escape. 🏰🌊 . 📅 What Iexperiences · Exploring Motovun: Wandering through the remarkably preserved medieval walled town perched high on a steep green hill overlooking the misty Mirna River valley, famous for its legendary underground truffle forests. · Discovering Rovinj: Stumbling through the vibrant, pastel-colored Venetian fishing port where steep lanes wind upward to the grand Church of St. Euphemia overlooking the sea. · Visiting the Pula Arena: Standing in absolute awe before the magnificent Roman amphitheater, one of the six largest surviving Roman arenas in the world, beautifully preserved right by the harbor. . 🏨 Where I stayed · I stayed in a meticulously restored stone villa nestled quietly among rolling olive groves just outside a historic hilltop village. Waking up to the absolute silence of the countryside and enjoying a fresh cup of coffee on the terrace while the morning mist lifted was absolute serenity. 🛏️☕ . 🍴 My culinary highlights · Istrian gastronomy is celebrated as a world-class culinary destination. I savored a steaming plate of handmade *fuži* pasta tossed generously with freshly shaved Istrian black truffles and rich local olive oil, accompanied by a glass of crisp, mineral-rich *Malvazija* white wine at a family-run tavern. 🍝🍷 . 📌 My tips for visiting · Rent a Car for Countryside Exploring: While the coastal towns are accessible, the true soul of Istria lies scattered across its winding interior hills and vineyards, making a rental car essential. · Hunt for Truffles in Autumn: If you visit during the autumn months, join a local truffle-hunting excursion in the Mirna valley with trained dogs and expert guides. · Wear Comfortable Walking Shoes: The medieval hill towns and coastal old quarters are paved in ancient, polished cobblestones that can be steep and slick, so sturdy footwear is a must. 📸🎒 . #Istria #CroatiaTravel #VisitCroatia #TravelDeep #HilltopTowns #IstrianTruflles #MediterraneanLife #BucketList #ExploreCroatia #TravelDiaries

Pula, Croatia

📅 Itinerary Day1: relaxing day at Monumenti hotel, it has beautiful grounds and convenient beach. Day2: lounged at the beach and visited Pula for an evening stroll and dinner. Day3: another relaxing day by the beach and great dinner in a beautiful location in Pula centre. 🏨 Accommodation Monumenti Heritage Hotel. 🍴 Food Recommendations we loved Salon 1875, honest place, good food, beautiful location. 📌 Tips be mindful when picking a restaurant, even the ones with good reviews (Veritas for example) might give you a separate tourist menu, that has only the more expensive premium items, skipping all normal menu items.
