Reverse tourism to escape the summer heat: This place is less crowded and has beautiful scenery.
Escape the summer heat with these 8️⃣ less crowded and beautiful places:
01 Ningbo | Zhejiang
Tianyi Pavilion and Yuehu Lake can be visited together in an afternoon. Tianyi Pavilion entrance fee is 30 yuan. The library is dimly lit, so don't expect to take photos; it's worth it to simply appreciate the garden. Exit from the west gate and go directly to Yuehu Lake. The evening breeze at 5 pm shimmers the water like shattered silver. Locals jog and walk their dogs along the lake; there are very few tourists.
🚄 Take Metro Line 2 from Ningbo Station to Gulou Station. It's a 10-minute walk from there. Don't take a taxi; it's congested.
🍜 You can eat a bowl of "Gangyagou" glutinous rice balls by Yuehu Lake. They have lard and sesame filling and cost 12 yuan, which is more affordable than the trendy shops in tourist areas. The next day, go to Qiantong Ancient Town. I don't recommend making a special trip here unless you have a particular fondness for old houses and stone-carved windows. The town is small; you can walk around in an hour. The entrance fee of 40 yuan is a bit pricey. If you really want to go, go early; the gate is unmanned before 7:30 am, saving you the entrance fee. The Xikou Tengtou Tourist Area is actually more suitable for bringing elders. The Republican-era buildings near Chiang Kai-shek's former residence are exquisitely renovated. Take the cable car up Miaogaotai from Xuedou Mountain for a panoramic view.
⏰ Summer afternoons in the mountains are sweltering. The cable car stops running at 4:30 pm, so remember to queue early. Two full days are just right. There are plenty of chain hotels near Tianyi Square in Ningbo city center for around 200 yuan.
02 Baicheng | Jilin
This city is so obscure that many Jilin locals haven't even been there. Head there for the Da'an Nenjiang Bay Tourist Area; summer is perfect.
🚄 A taxi from Baicheng Station to the scenic area costs about 30 yuan and takes about 20 minutes. There's no entrance fee for Nenjiang Bay. Walk along the wetland boardwalk; the reeds on both sides are taller than a person, rustling in the wind, and you can smell the mixture of water plants and mud.
⏰ Arrive around 6 AM for the best experience. A light mist rises from the river, birdsong fills the air, and you might spot egrets and herons. In the afternoon, the sun beats down, turning the wetlands into a sauna, halving the experience. The boardwalk is 5 kilometers long and can be tiring. If you're with elderly people or children, just walk halfway and turn back; don't force yourself to the end. Have lunch in the city for some Northeastern cuisine. The sweet and sour pork and pork stew cost about 40 RMB per person, and the portions are huge—more than two people could finish. Baicheng doesn't feel overly touristy; accommodation is quite clean for just over 100 RMB, perfect for those wanting to completely escape the crowds.
⚠️ There are few water stalls in the scenic area, so bring your own two bottles—don't worry about the weight.
03 Jingzhou|Hubei
Jingzhou Ancient City is not commercialized, which is rare. Climbing the city wall is free. After 6:30 PM, start from the East Gate. The light shines obliquely on the bricks, making the textures look etched. In the distance, small boats are rowing on the moat—a serene scene.
⏰ The best time to visit is between 6 and 7 pm; any later and it will be completely dark. Walk down the city wall from the North Gate; Zhang Juzheng Street is right next to it. The "Jingzhou Zhang Juzheng Street Beef Rice Noodles" stall at the street entrance is worth stopping for; it's 13 yuan a bowl, with plenty of beef and a very spicy broth. The Jingzhou Lantern Festival and folk customs aren't in the main urban area, but in the suburban cultural park, a 20-minute taxi ride away. To be honest, unless you happen to visit during the Lantern Festival, there's not much to see on weekdays; the park is empty, there are few lanterns, and the 60 yuan entrance fee isn't worth it. I recommend spending your time on the ancient city wall and the adjacent Jingzhou Museum. The Western Han Dynasty mummy inside is extremely well-preserved; admission is free, but it's closed on Mondays, so be careful not to step on it.
⚠️ Some crenellations on the ancient city wall have large gaps, so keep a close eye on children. Where there are no railings, there really aren't any. For accommodation, stay near Jingzhong Road in the city center; the area downstairs is full of night market stalls in the evenings, selling crayfish by weight (minimum 3 jin), and you can eat your fill for 70 yuan per person. 04 Jiujiang | Jiangxi
Lushan in August requires a light jacket in the mornings and evenings, which is its biggest difference from other summer resorts.
🚄 Take bus 57 from Jiujiang Station directly to the lower station of the Lushan cable car. The journey takes about an hour and is much cheaper than taking a taxi. The round-trip cable car fare is 120 yuan. Once you reach Guling Town, the temperature immediately drops by seven or eight degrees Celsius. Stay overnight in town; don't go up and down the mountain in one day—it's tiring and a waste. In the afternoon, hike the section from Ruqin Lake to Huajing (Flower Path). It's a 20-minute flat trail, full of greenery, with squirrels jumping around in the trees. The next morning, climb the Five Old Peaks. Hiking all five peaks takes about three hours. If you're not physically fit, turn back at the third peak; the scenery is similar.
⏰ To see the sea of clouds, you need to get there before 9 am. After 10 am, most of the fog dissipates, leaving only a white expanse of sky. The West Sea of Lushan is another area to explore. It's about an hour and a half drive from Jiujiang city, or you can take a bus to Zhelin Town. Xihai Lake has no entrance fee, but a boat tour costs an additional 80 yuan. The water is incredibly clear, with visibility of five to six meters; under direct sunlight, the lake surface resembles a large pane of glass.
🍜 Try the "Stone Fish with Bursting Eggs" and "Lushan Three Stones" on the mountain. It costs around 50 yuan per person; the taste is decent, but the ingredients are fresh.
⚠️ The weather on the mountain is unpredictable, so bring a raincoat—it's more practical than an umbrella.
05 Xinxiang|Henan
Baoquan Tourist Area is a treasure trove for water activities in summer. The water is a light green, so clear you can see the pebbles at the bottom. From Xinxiang city, take a bus to Baobi Town and then transfer to a scenic area shuttle bus; the total journey takes about an hour and a half. The entrance fee plus shuttle bus costs around 100 yuan. Once inside the scenic area, follow the path; both sides are filled with pools, some ankle-deep, others head-deep, making it easy to wade in.
⏰ Arrive before 10 AM for the coolest and cleanest water; it gets murky in the afternoon when it gets crowded. There's a short glass walkway in the scenic area, suspended above the waterfall, with water mist rising from below, making your legs feel weak. If you're afraid of heights, just take the side mountain path. Baligou is different from Baoquan; it's wilder, with higher mountains and deeper valleys, and a larger waterfall drop. I suggest you choose one: if you're short on time, choose Baoquan for a better water experience; if you enjoy hiking and waterfall views, choose Baligou. Climbing the "sky ladder" in the scenic area offers a breathtaking view, showing the layered cliffs of the Taihang Mountains opposite.
🍜 At the foot of the mountain, a bowl of noodles at a farmhouse costs 15 yuan, especially delicious with garlic.
⚠️ The stones in Baligou are slippery after rain; wear non-slip shoes, don't try to walk in flip-flops.
06 Jinzhong|Shanxi
Visit only one of the Qiao Family Compound or the Wang Family Compound; don't try to visit both. I chose the Wang Family Compound for a simple reason: it's huge. The Wang Family Compound is several times the size of the Qiao Family Compound. Walking inside is like entering a maze, with intricate details everywhere – brick carvings, wood carvings, stone carvings – you can easily spend half an hour exploring just one courtyard. The entrance fee is 55 yuan, cheaper than the Qiao Family Compound, but with half the number of tourists.
🚄 From Taiyuan, take the high-speed train to Jiexiu East Station (half an hour), then a 15-minute taxi ride to the Wang Family Compound. After visiting the Wang Family Compound, I went to Pingyao Ancient City in the afternoon and stayed overnight. Pingyao has a more charming atmosphere at night than during the day. After 8 pm, as darkness falls, the red lanterns on South Street are fully lit, most of the tourists have left, and the stone slabs are worn smooth and reflective, allowing you to hear your own footsteps. The next morning, I went up the city wall. The entrance fee is 125 yuan, which includes all attractions within the ancient city; if you only want to go up the city wall, you can buy a separate ticket for 25 yuan.
⏰ Walking along the South Gate section of the city wall is sufficient, offering the best view of the city gate tower and the city tower forming a straight line. I'm not disappointed that Mianshan Mountain in Jiexiu wasn't on my itinerary. The entrance fee is expensive, the scenery is convoluted, and it's heavily commercialized, making it more suitable for tour groups.
🍜 The bowl-shaped rice cakes and kaolaolao (a type of steamed bun) in Pingyao are worth trying; a bowl costs around ten yuan. Street stalls are more authentic than larger restaurants.
07 Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture | Xinjiang
In August, you'll need a down jacket at night on the Bayinbuluke Grassland – the ultimate answer to escaping the summer heat. The grassland entrance fee plus the shuttle bus costs 140 yuan. The shuttle bus takes an hour to reach the main viewing platform, with snow-capped mountains and grasslands along the way. Yaks and sheep graze on both sides of the road like moving stars.
⏰ To see the sunset over the Nine Bends and Eighteen Turns, you must arrive at the viewing platform before 7:30 PM to secure a good spot. The sun doesn't start setting until after 9 PM, so waiting an hour or two is worthwhile. At sunset, the river reflects nine suns simultaneously. The Taklamakan Desert is another extreme. Starting from Korla, driving along the desert highway, you'll see endless sand dunes on both sides, the sand flowing like water in the wind.
⚠️ Always travel in the desert with a convoy or an experienced guide. Don't venture out alone, as cell phone signal is mostly nonexistent. The Tarim Poplar Forest Park is best visited in mid-October when the poplars are fully yellow. If you go in August, the leaves are still green, and the grandeur is less impressive. If you only have time to choose one spot, I recommend Bayinbuluke. Grasslands, snow-capped mountains, and sunsets—this combination is top-notch anywhere.
08 Mudanjiang | Heilongjiang
In summer, the water temperature at Jingpo Lake is around 20 degrees Celsius. You'll need to swim for about two minutes before getting out, but the coolness is something air conditioning can't provide.
🚄 There are direct buses from Mudanjiang Station to Jingpo Lake Scenic Area. The journey takes two hours and costs 30 yuan. The entrance fee is 100 yuan. Upon entering, first visit the Diaoshuilou Waterfall. In August, the water volume is high, and the sound of the water can be heard from afar. The mist on your face feels like a light rain. There are diving performances every day at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, where people jump off the cliff. Even the most timid will feel a bit nervous watching, but it's worth the wait. After the waterfall, take a boat tour on the lake. The boat ticket is 100 yuan, and it lasts for one hour. The lake is expansive, and the green mountains on both sides are almost dark. The wind carries moisture, making you feel like you've been chilled.
🍜 At the Jingpo Lake Fish Restaurant near the scenic area entrance, a silver carp stewed with tofu costs 88 yuan. It's fresh, but the portion is average; just right for two people.
⏰ Enter the park at 8:00 AM. There are fewer people, the lighting is better, and there are no queues for photos. There aren't many things to do in Mudanjiang city itself. A walk along the river and seeing the Eight Heroines of the River statue is enough in half an hour. I suggest you plan two days: the first day at Jingpo Lake, and the second day at Hengdaohezi Town, where you can find the Middle East Railway Museum and the Russian Old Street. It's quiet and less crowded, perfect for a stroll. ⚠️ Mosquitoes are plentiful in the lake area; long pants and long sleeves are essential, and even mosquito repellent won't keep you dry.
