Escape the heat with your kids? This place is so cool it doesn't feel like summer at all.
Everyone says summer vacation means seeing crowds, but that's just being misled by popular cities. Truly cool and peaceful places are often not on the first page of travel guides. I explored eight different directions and compiled a list of routes suitable for families with children, avoiding the heat, and not too crowded. Some routes involve exploring caves, some involve wading in rivers, and some simply offer a cool respite in old buildings. Follow these routes, and you're unlikely to go wrong.
1️⃣ Chongqing
Chongqing's summers are notoriously scorching, but there are cool spots too. Avoid the crowds at Jiefangbei; take your kids straight to Dazu Rock Carvings. The grottoes are cool and shady, several degrees cooler than in the city, and you can see statues from the Tang and Song dynasties.
⏰ I recommend entering as early as 8 am when it opens. The sunlight shines obliquely on the face of the Amoghavajra Buddha, making the details clearest. When it gets hot at midday, head to Jinyun Mountain. The shady area around Daihu Lake on the mountainside is perfect for kids to wade in the shallows, while adults can sit on the rocks and enjoy the breeze—more comfortable than an air-conditioned room.
⚠️ The mosquitoes on the mountain are fierce, so don't skimp on long pants and mosquito repellent. After 4 PM, head to the Wulong Karst Tourist Area. The boardwalk along the Three Natural Bridges is entirely in the shade of the canyon, and the spray from the waterfalls will directly hit your face, giving you a shiver. Take your time with your child; the whole trip takes two hours, no need to rush. The Yangtze River Three Gorges is best enjoyed by evening cruise; the river breeze will cool you down, and your child will be mesmerized by the cliffs on both sides.
🚄 It takes about an hour by high-speed train from the main city to Wulong. Taking a taxi from the station to the scenic area is very convenient.
2️⃣ Zhuhai City|Guangdong
Zhuhai is a great place for a leisurely family trip; don't overschedule. Chimelong International Ocean Resort is worth a whole day, but don't be foolish enough to queue for the roller coaster under the blazing sun.
⏰ Before 10 AM, head straight to the whale shark aquarium; it's less crowded, and watching the fish swim overhead in the glass tunnel will keep your child quiet for a long time. At midday when it's hottest, escape to the indoor penguin enclosure—it's well-air-conditioned and you can even watch the penguins dive. After 3 PM, head to the dolphin theater; it's open-air but breezy, so it's not too stuffy. The next day, don't rush. Take the kids for a bike ride along Lovers' Road. Rent a bicycle with a child seat and cycle from the beach to the Zhuhai Fisher Girl statue. Palm trees provide shade, and you can stop anytime to stroll on the sand.
🍜 For lunch, find a long-established rice noodle roll shop along the river. Freshly made hot rice noodle rolls with iced soy milk are much better than chain stores in shopping malls.
⚠️ The UV rays at the beach are extremely strong. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, and don't remove your hat and sunglasses. This road is suitable for strollers and children around five or six years old riding small bicycles; the surface is flat and without slopes.
3️⃣ Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture|Qinghai
The average temperature here during summer vacation is less than 20 degrees Celsius; you'll need a jacket at night—perfect for escaping the heat. Hoh Xil is not open to the public, but the Sonam Dargye Nature Reserve on the outskirts is open to children, where they can see Tibetan antelopes and wild donkeys running on the distant meadows.
⏰ Six o'clock in the morning is a good time to observe animals, as they are most active in the morning light. Self-driving is not allowed in the heart of the Sanjiangyuan National Park, but there are permitted hiking trails in the Angsai Grand Canyon at the source of the Lancang River. The streams are icy cold, and children are too scared to go in, but jumping on the rocks is enough to keep them entertained for a long time.
⚠️ The altitude is around 4,000 meters. If your child complains of a headache, descend immediately; don't push them. This place is not suitable for very young children; children over six years old will find it much better.
🚄 Hire a car from Yushu city; it takes a day round trip. The driver knows the route well, so don't drive yourself.
4️⃣ Baicheng City|Jilin
Baicheng is an underrated summer resort. The highest temperature throughout the summer is only 27 or 28 degrees Celsius, and you'll need a light blanket at night. Take the kids to the Nenjiang Bay Tourist Area in Da'an. The river is wide and the wind is strong but not sticky.
⏰ Arrive after 3 PM. Walk along the riverside boardwalk and watch the reeds on the opposite bank ripple in the wind. The kids can spend an hour collecting seashells in the shallows. There's a wetland birdwatching platform by the river; you can see egrets and herons returning to their nests around 5 or 6 PM. Remember to bring binoculars.
🍜 For dinner, find a restaurant in the city that serves stewed river fish. The fish is freshly killed, and the soup is so delicious the kids can eat two bowls of rice with it.
⚠️ There are many mosquitoes by the river, so spray mosquito repellent before evening. This place is perfect for the whole family; the paths are all flat, so strollers and wheelchairs are no problem.
5️⃣ Zhengzhou City|Henan
Zhengzhou summers are hot, but there are many indoor attractions. As soon as the sun was blazing in the morning, we went straight to the Henan Museum. The air conditioning was great, and the nine national treasures kept the kids entertained for half a day.
⏰ Enter as soon as it opens; fewer people, allowing you to get close enough to examine the patterns on the Jiahu bone flutes in the glass cases. At midday when the heat is at its peak, head to the tree-lined path on the north side of Xiliuhu Park. The plane trees provide ample shade, and a breeze from the lake makes it a perfect spot to spread out a picnic blanket and relax for the afternoon. In the cooler afternoon, head to Zhenwei Water City. The ancient-style street is crisscrossed by waterways; kids can ride small boats through the arched bridges, enjoying the refreshing splashes of water.
⚠️ Songshan Shaolin Temple is over an hour's drive from the city. If you only have two days, don't force it; you'll only have time for a rushed visit. The temple itself is worth seeing, but it gets very crowded during the summer holidays. It's recommended to go on a weekday and take the cable car up Shaoshi Mountain. The mountain breeze is cool, and the scenery along the Sanhuangzhai boardwalk is quite wild.
🚄 A taxi ride from the city center to the museum takes about fifteen minutes.
6️⃣ Haikou City | Hainan
Haikou is cooler than Sanya and much less crowded, making it more suitable for leisurely strolls with kids. In the morning, visit the Crater Park. Climbing to the top of the crater takes only about twenty minutes; the path is shaded by tropical plants, and the breeze blowing in from the crater entrance is so refreshing you won't want to leave.
⏰ Go early; it's not too hot before 9 am. At noon, escape to the Wugong Temple. The old houses are breezy, and you can see the inscriptions of Hainan's historical figures. Kids can sit on stone benches and feed the koi. In the hottest part of the afternoon, find an old teahouse in the Qilou Old Street, order a pot of partridge tea, and a couple of coconut cakes. After the sun dips below the horizon, stroll around the Qilou buildings; the weathered walls are bathed in a warm yellow light, and kids can play hide-and-seek in the corridors all afternoon.
🍜 For dinner, have a bowl of Hainan noodles in an alley on Bo'ai South Road. The pickled bamboo shoots and peanuts are the soul of the meal.
⚠️ The sun in Haikou may not look harsh, but the humidity is high, and you'll get sunburned faster than inland areas, so don't skimp on sunscreen.
7️⃣ Xianyang City | Shaanxi
Xianyang is right next to Xi'an, but it's half the crowd during the summer holidays, making it cool and quiet. Take your kids to Qianling Mausoleum. Don't just look at the stele without inscription; walk up the north slope of Liangshan Mountain. Stone lions and horses line the road, and the wind blowing from the plateau carries a slightly earthy smell. The kids will run around counting the statues, which is more interesting than listening to explanations in a museum.
⏰ Go up the mountain after 4 pm; the light is perfect, and the mausoleum area isn't too sunny. Stay overnight at Yuanjia Village, a Guanzhong Impression Experience Area. The entire village is built in the old Shaanxi style, and corn and chili peppers hang along the stone-paved roads.
🍜 Have a bowl of biangbiang noodles for dinner in the village. The wide noodles are chewy, and the kids will tear the noodles themselves, having more fun playing than eating.
⚠️ Qianling Scenic Area is very large. It's best to take the electric cart with young children, as the walking route is over two kilometers long and too difficult for three- or four-year-olds.
🚄 Take the high-speed train from Xi'an North Station to Xianyang West Station (about 20 minutes), then take a taxi to Qianling (about 40 minutes). This area is suitable for families with children. The elderly can enjoy tea and Qinqiang opera in the village, while the children run around in the alleys – everyone has their own fun.
8️⃣ Xinzhou City | Shanxi
Xinzhou is a truly cool place. The average temperature during summer vacation is in the early twenties (Celsius), and it can even get a bit chilly at night. When taking children to Wutai Mountain Scenic Area, don't rush into the temples. First, take the scenic bus to Dailuo Peak and climb 108 steps. The mountain wind is howling, and the children can count as they climb. At the top, you can see the entire Taihuai Town.
⏰ Arrive before 7:00 AM, before the clouds and mist dissipate. The temple complex will appear and disappear in the mist, making children feel like they've entered a fairyland. In the afternoon, we went to Yanmen Pass. The wind was so strong on the pass that we had to pull our hats down. Standing on the crenellations, looking at the valley nestled between two mountains, the kids understood the meaning of "one man can hold the pass."
⚠️ Wutai Mountain is at a high altitude, with a large temperature difference between day and night; a light down jacket is a must. Laoniu Bay is more suitable for kids who like a more adventurous experience. The Yellow River makes a large bend here, the water a mix of yellow and green. You can take a speedboat ride around, the wind is strong and the waves are high—kids over five or six will scream with excitement.
🍜 In the evening, we had a bowl of mutton offal noodles in Xinzhou Ancient City. The broth was rich and flavorful, and paired with a roasted bun, the kids ate until their mouths were glistening with oil.
🚄 From Taiyuan, take the high-speed train to Xinzhou West Station (about 30 minutes), then hire a car to Wutai Mountain (about an hour and a half drive).
Of these eight places, I've taken the kids to, and I highly recommend Xinzhou and Yushu—they're surprisingly cool, unlike summer. Zhuhai's relaxed atmosphere and Zhengzhou's indoor activities are also suitable for kids who dislike the heat. What cool, less crowded places have you taken your kids to? Share in the comments, and I'll check them out next time!
