🚠🥾 Early April Renon: empty town hiking in South Tyrol In early April, you arrive at the cable car station near Bolzano train station (Via Renon 12), buy a ticket for the Renon cable car — a 12-minute ride climbing 950 meters to Upper Bolzano (Soprabolzano/Oberbozen, 1,220 meters). As the doors open, the cold wind from the southern Alps mixed with the scent of melting snow hits your face. At this moment, you understand: April in the Dolomites is the melt season, with few visitors entering the mountains and most villages playing the empty town trick. In return, the entire Renon plateau feels like it’s reserved just for you. 🚠 Coordinates and transport chain (guide version) Full route: Bolzano city center → Renon cable car up to Soprabolzano → transfer to Renon narrow-gauge train (Trenino del Renon) → Collalbo (Klobenstein, 1,154 meters) terminal → hike past the earth pyramids → toward St. Nicholas church → continue walking to the small village of Longostagno → bus back to Bolzano. Bolzano cable car station: Via Renon 12, 39100 Bolzano, right next to the train station, a 5-minute walk. Renon narrow-gauge train: South Tyrol’s only mountain narrow-gauge railway, built in 1907. Originally it ran directly from Bolzano city center to the Renon plateau. In 1966, the section was replaced by the cable car, but the train remains the main transport on the plateau. The ride from Soprabolzano to Collalbo takes about 15–20 minutes. Earth pyramids (Piramidi di terra): From Collalbo, follow the signs for a 15–20 to 30–40 minute walk. These are slender clay pillars up to 20–30 meters tall, each topped with a naturally balanced large stone, resembling Gothic church spires. Longostagno: About 6–7 km further on foot from Collalbo. The village has the Chiesa della Santa Ottilia di Longostagno (St. Ottilia church, Dorf Paese, 39054 Longostagno BZ). Public transport: South Tyrol bus system (Südtirolmobil). From Bolzano, take bus 165 to Collalbo and nearby towns. In early April, some mountain village routes run infrequently. Be sure to check return bus times on the Südtirolmobil app before you go. ⚠️ April key reminder: During melt season, many low-star hotels, restaurants, and visitor centers in villages are closed, and bus service is sparse. Be sure to check return trips in advance. It’s recommended to buy a combined cable car + train ticket (about €18), which is about €4 cheaper than buying separately. 🥾 How to enjoy the empty town hike properly ① Cable car + narrow-gauge train: Bolzano’s backyard The Renon plateau is often called "Bolzano’s backyard," with an average elevation over 1,000 meters. The distant Dolomites peaks remain unobstructed. When you take the cable car up, the entire city of Bolzano and the Dolomites unfold beneath you — this "city to alpine meadow" transition takes just 12 minutes. The old wooden train rattles toward Collalbo, with brownish melt-season meadows outside the window and white peaks in the distance. The "Alpine light" season hasn’t arrived yet, but the black, white, and gray melt colors have their own austere beauty. ② Earth pyramids: glacier’s strange masterpiece left on Renon Get off at Collalbo and walk toward the earth pyramids. These slender triangular mud pillars topped with "mushroom cap" stones look like miniature Gothic church spires or the stone forests of Cappadocia, Turkey. They are the result of centuries of ancient glacier erosion and soil erosion. In April, few people are around. Standing among the pillars, you can caption your photo: "The glacier left, leaving this pillar as its calling card." ③ St. Ottilia church + Longostagno: the empty town trick in action From the earth pyramids, continue forward, passing a small mountain village church, and keep walking to the village of Longostagno. The moment you enter the village, it really feels like an empty town trick: The village’s three low-star hotels are all closed, windows dusty; No one is seen on the street, but later you find out villagers are attending mass in the church — the village’s Chiesa della Santa Ottilia di Longostagno is the community’s heartbeat; An English-speaking local comes out and kindly tells you how to take the bus back to Bolzano. 💡 This scene is the most touching detail of the whole story — in South Tyrol’s German-speaking mountain village, Sunday mass remains the community’s heartbeat. As a stranger, you unexpectedly touch the village’s true pulse through a mass. This "empty town + mass" contrast is something you definitely won’t experience during the busy July and August tourist seasons. ④ Bus back to Bolzano Follow the local’s directions and take the bus down the mountain back to Bolzano. In April, this bus may run only a few times a day. Be sure to confirm the last bus time before boarding — otherwise, you might be waiting for rescue by the empty village church. It’s recommended to allow about 6–7 hours for the whole trip (round-trip cable car + train + 6–7 km hike + bus wait time). ✨ Special experience (anti-crowd version) "Melt season exclusive" package: Coming in April means avoiding the July and August tourist flood. You can freely photograph the earth pyramids, and the entire village of Longostagno will play the empty town trick just for you. The trade-off is cold, damp weather, and some facilities closed — but in return, you get the luxury of having the entire Renon plateau to yourself. Best time: Early to mid-April is the tail end of melt season. The snow line starts to retreat, Dolomites peaks remain white, and the meadows at the foot of the mountain begin to turn green. Taking the cable car in the morning, hiking in the afternoon, and returning by bus in the evening is the most reliable plan. What to wear: waterproof hiking shoes + light down jacket + windbreaker. In April, the Renon plateau is about 10–15°C during the day with large temperature differences between morning and night. The temperature difference inside the cable car is about 8°C. Even in summer, bring a light jacket. Language note: In Bolzano city, you hear Italian, but once you enter the mountain villages, German signs and greetings become the norm — South Tyrol is the only area in Italy where German is the daily language. Your cable car + train trip from Bolzano to Longostagno is actually a "crossing" from Italian into the Austrian cultural sphere. 🏔️📜 By the way: why is this "German-speaking Italy"? Geography: The Dolomites are located in South Tyrol on the southern slope of the Alps. The Renon plateau averages over 1,000 meters in elevation and is a microcosm of "Bolzano’s backyard" — alpine meadows, pastures, vineyards, and mountain towns sharply contrast with the surrounding towering Dolomites peaks. History: Before World War I, South Tyrol belonged to Austria, with a predominantly German-speaking population. After the war, the eastern mountainous part of South Tyrol was officially assigned to Italy under the Treaty of Saint-Germain. Italy was granted Trentino and South Tyrol. The fascist regime then aggressively pushed Italianization — in 1928, the Italian name "Alto Adige" was mandated, and in the 1930s, German language education was restricted. The German-speaking population dropped from 90% in 1918 to 70% in 1930. Today, South Tyrol (officially the Autonomous Province of Bolzano–South Tyrol) is the only area in Italy where German is the daily language — the English-speaking local you met in Longostagno likely has grandparents who considered themselves Austrian their whole lives. Culture: South Tyrol preserves Austro-Hungarian mountain culture — bright yellow churches, German village names, Sunday mass, Speck smoked ham, Canederli bread dumplings, Apfelstrudel apple strudel. Walking through the empty village of Longostagno, you feel a cultural dissonance: on the map, it’s Italy; your ears hear German; your eyes see an Austrian-style mountain village. World War I memory: The Dolomites were the core battlefield of the "White War" (1915–1918). Austria-Hungary and Italy faced off along three sharp mountain ridges, fighting for three years on rocky peaks at 2,900 meters elevation. The tunnels, trenches, and steel cables left in the mountains today form the "world’s best-preserved open-air World War I Alpine museum." The Collalbo → Longostagno hiking trail you walk on may have been the route soldiers used to transport supplies a century ago. So when you come to Renon in early April, you’re not just "sightseeing" — the cable car pulls you from the Italian-speaking area into the German-speaking area, the earth pyramids remind you that glaciers are the true masters here, the empty village + church mass in Longostagno lets you encounter South Tyrol’s real heartbeat, and the countryside bus on the way back is the farewell gift from this "German-speaking island in Italy." 🚠🥾 🔱 Check in at the world’s most beautiful destinations 🔱

I hiked trails winding through valleys carpeted with wildflowers, with the famous rock towers—the Vajolet Towers and the Kesselkogel—piercing the sky above . #falladventures Erosion Process: The formation is a constant process driven by the alternation of heavy rain and drought. When this moraine clay is wet, it turns into a soft, flowing mud; when dry, it becomes as hard as stone. The Protective Capstone: Large boulders interspersed in the clay act as protective "hats" or umbrellas, shielding the earth directly beneath them from the rain's erosion. As the surrounding, unprotected material is washed away, the protected column of earth rises, forming a pyramid shape that can reach heights of up to 30 meters

#falladventures The Ritten Earth Pyramids (German: Rittner Erdpyramiden; Italian: Piramidi di terra del Renon) are a unique and famous geological phenomenon located on the Ritten plateau near Bolzano, in South Tyrol, northern Italy. They are considered the tallest and most aesthetically pleasing earth pyramids in Europe. Formation of the Pyramids The earth pyramids are natural columns of compacted moraine clay, a type of loose rock deposited by Ice Age glaciers thousands of years ago.

#hellohalloween The geological formations pictured are the Earth Pyramids of Ritten (Erdpyramiden am Ritten in German; Piramidi di terra del Renon in Italian), located in South Tyrol, northern Italy. These formations are considered the tallest and most aesthetically shaped earth pyramids in Europe. Formation and Characteristics: Earth pyramids are a result of a natural process called erosion. They are formed from glacial moraine clay that was deposited by glaciers during the last ice age, approximately 25,000 years ago.

#hellohalloween Earth pyramids of Ritten are a popular and well-known natural attraction in South Tyrol, Italy. They are considered to be the tallest and most perfectly shaped earth pyramids in Europe. The formations are a popular destination for hikers, families, and individuals, with many visitors considering them a must-see sight in the region. The pyramids are located on the Ritten (Renon) plateau and are a result of a natural process called differential erosion, which began after glaciers from the last Ice Age receded. The pillars are made of moraine clay soil, which is hard when dry but turns into a soft mud when wet.

The hotel is set on the Siusi Plateau in the Dolomites, next to the ski area. My friend and I chartered a car directly from Milan, which took about four and a half hours. The scenery along the way was worth appreciating, but the winding mountain road at the end made me feel a little nauseous. As soon as I arrived at the hotel, I realized that everything was worth it. [Facepalm] This time we booked a two-story detached cabin, which cost about 1,000 Euros per night. The room rate included three meals a day and various activities. At night, you can also make a fire in the fireplace in the room. The room also has a back door leading directly to the ski area. I feel a rare peace of mind when I wake up every day and face the Alps. I like the hotel's outdoor terrace the most. I can also watch the stars at night [Love][Cute][Cute][Cute][Cute][Cute][Cute][Cute][Cute]
