#easytravelpost Mount Rogers (5,729 ft) is Virginia's high point — reached via the Appalachian Trail from Grayson Highlands State Park (Massie Gap, $5/VA $7 non-VA veh, card at booth) or the RH Linden Trail from Elk Garden. The mossy half is the 1 mi of balsam fir (Abies balsamea) ridge on the AT between Wilburn Ridge and the summit where Sphagnum pads the fir-root flare and Racomitrium films the bark — the only boreal island in VA, 5,500 ft+. I parked at Massie Gap (Grayson Highlands, $7 non-VA, card), drove from Damascus (40 min), started 7:40 a.m. in June, watched the ponies on Wilburn Ridge first.
The AT route is 8 mi RT, 2,000 ft gain, 4–5 hrs. The moss lives on the north face of the fir ridge 0.3 mi before the summit cairn where the fog off the Blue Ridge sits till 10 a.m.
Mistake: I hiked in January — RH Linden Trail closed by ice, Massie Gap road gated, turned back, lost the $7. April–Nov. Second mistake: I fed a Grayson pony — $100 fine, the ponies are feral-but-protected, a ranger on Wilburn Ridge flagged me. Third: I expected card at the summit — there's no summit facility, the Grayson booth is card but the AT maintainers' honour box at Massie is cash-only.
Buy in Damascus: a $6.50 trailburger at the Crabtree, not the $18 Highlands café. Gear: 2.5 L water, $120 boots, $100 hard shell — Rogers summit 20°F colder than Damascus.
Local rule: Grayson $5/$7 entry, no AT permit, ponies don't feed, no drones near the ponies, stay on the AT in the fir zone (the moss recovers in 15 yrs not 5). The moss on the fir root is the Blue Ridge's boreal gift — step on cut board.
Opinion: Mount Rogers is the 5,729 ft VA high-point with wild ponies + a balsam fir island, and the mossy fir ridge 1 mi below is the 15-min half with zero summit-cairn crowd. Should Grayson Highlands add a $2 honour box at Massie Gap for fir-board upkeep, or keep the $7 gate? I'd add it. Would you hike 8 mi on the AT for a mossy balsam fir ridge with ponies?
