Runan travel guide and discussion

! I mean, seriously! To catch this autumn scenery, I've run back and forth to Zhumadian 4 times! 🍂 Zhumadian in October and November is truly an underrated treasure for an autumn getaway! No crowded throngs of people, just trees full of golden leaves and antique architecture. I stayed up late to put together this comprehensive guide—it's all honest, heartfelt advice. If you're planning to go, just follow this plan! 👇 · -- 📅 [Weather and clothing for October–November] Zhumadian at this time of year has crisp, clear autumn weather, but the temperature difference between day and night is huge! 🧥 You might be able to wear a thin sweater during the day, but once the sun goes down, the wind will make you question your life choices. Clothing advice: Wear autumn outfits suitable for photos underneath (earth tones, red, and white look best in pictures), and be sure to layer a thick, windproof jacket on top! Comfortable sneakers are a must, because you'll be doing a lot of walking. 👟 · -- 🗺️ [My 2-day, 1-night efficient itinerary] Day 1: Arrive in the city ➡️ Royal Post Station (explore ancient architecture during the day, enjoy the night view in the evening) ➡️ Find food at the night market Day 2: Chaya Mountain (hike to enjoy the autumn scenery and see the strange rock formations) ➡️ Suya Lake (feel the lake breeze and watch the sunset over the reeds) ➡️ Return trip (If you have extra time, you can add Laole Mountain; the autumn forest colors are layered and distinct—it's absolutely stunning!) · -- 📸 [100% photogenic check-in spots] 1. Royal Post Station: A must-visit for fans of ancient styles! Blue bricks and black tiles paired with autumn's yellow leaves—any spot is perfect for a great photo. I recommend wearing Hanfu or "New Chinese" style clothing; it looks amazing in photos! 🏮 2. Chaya Mountain: Not only is it a filming location for "Journey to the West," but in autumn, the mountain is covered in red, yellow, and green. Take the cable car up for a bird's-eye view—the visual impact is incredible! ⛰️ 3. Suya Lake: Go in the evening! The sunset glow spills onto the lake, and the reeds on the shore sway in the wind—it's pure cinematic magic. 🌅 · -- 🍜 [Local-recommended food] When you come to Zhumadian, don't just stick to chain restaurants! You must try these authentic flavors: · Breakfast soul food: A steaming bowl of hot and sour soup (hulatang) paired with freshly pan-fried buns—one bite and you'll feel completely comforted! 🥟 · Specialty noodles: Sesame leaf noodles, with a unique fragrance and excellent texture—you'll want more after the first bowl. · Late-night snack choice: Runan beef tripe hot pot! Mixed with sesame paste and chili oil, sizzling with flavor, and paired with a little wine—it's amazing! 🍢 · Warming soups: Chicken meatball soup or mutton soup—drink a bowl in autumn to warm yourself from head to toe. 🍲 · -- 🏨 [How to choose accommodation?] · For convenience and liveliness: Stay in Yicheng District (downtown). Everything you need for dining, entertainment, and fun is right there, and it's relatively central for getting to various attractions. · For atmosphere: Choose a unique inn near the Royal Post Station. You can open your window at night to see the night view of the ancient town—the experience is fantastic. 🌙 · -- ⚠️ [Tips to avoid pitfalls (hard-learned lessons)] 1. Transportation trap: Attractions in Zhumadian are quite spread out, especially Chaya Mountain and Suya Lake. I strongly recommend driving yourself or booking a car in advance! Do not try to hail a car on the side of the road at the last minute; it's windy and cold, and it's easy to delay your itinerary. 🚗 2. Travel off-peak: There are really a lot of people on weekends and holidays. If you can take time off, try to go on weekdays—the experience will be twice as good. 3. Mosquito protection: When going to the lake or mountains, even in autumn, bring mosquito repellent. Don't ask me how I know. 😭 4. Spend wisely: Be cautious about buying local specialties inside scenic areas. If you want to buy authentic dried goods, go to local wet markets or large supermarkets in the city—they are cheaper and more authentic. 5. Check the weather in advance: If you want to see the most brilliant yellow leaves, be sure to check the recent weather before you leave. A heavy rain can knock down quite a few leaves. 💬 Final thoughts: Zhumadian isn't a city that stuns you at first glance, but it has a magic that makes you slow down. In autumn, it blends gentleness and depth just right. Find a weekend, bring your family and friends, and go experience it for yourself! 🍁

Just returned from Zhumadian! I said it would be rough, but I was actually amazed by how low the prices are 😭! After three days my expenses were super low. There are mountains, rivers, and ancient temples, and the huge portions of southern Henan food left me stuffed. ✅ Pros 1. Diverse landscapes, including the top-tier 5A Chaya Mountain. It's a unique rocky mountain on the plains, a filming location for Journey to the West, with many caves and great hiking. There's also the grand Nanhai Zen Temple, the free ancient-style town Royal Post Station, and the vast Suya Lake. It covers mountains, water, ancient architecture, lakes, and culture—something for everyone. 2. Great value, with many free attractions. Royal Post Station and Suya Lake are free. Paid attraction tickets are affordable. Dining and accommodation in the city are inexpensive. Local snacks like spicy soup, braised noodles, and Queshan jelly are cheap and plentiful. Overall travel costs are low. 3. Convenient high-speed rail access. Zhumadian West Station has high-speed rail, making it quick to arrive from Zhengzhou or Wuhan. It's friendly for out-of-town visitors. Taxis in the city are cheap, making local travel easy. 4. Flexible activity levels. If you want exercise, hike Chaya Mountain or Laole Mountain. If you prefer to relax, stroll through the Royal Post Station or along Suya Lake in the evening. You can choose between active and laid-back options without needing to hike the whole time. ❌ Cons 1. Attractions are scattered across different counties, making cross-county public transport difficult. Chaya Mountain is in Suiping, Nanhai Zen Temple and Suya Lake are in Runan, and Laole Mountain is in Queshan. They are far apart. There are no direct tourist buses, and schedules are infrequent, requiring transfers to county buses, which is time-consuming. Without a car, you'll have to carpool or hire a car, increasing travel costs. 2. Many attractions are just average during the day. The Royal Post Station is quite ordinary during the day and only looks good at night. Suya Lake has few facilities and is just a raw, natural lake. Laole Mountain's scenery isn't as impressive as the mountains in western Henan. 3. Hot summers and sun exposure at Chaya Mountain. Summers on the plains are very hot. Chaya Mountain has many rocks and little shade, making hiking very sunny and buggy. It's better to visit in spring or autumn. 4. Some attractions have many extra costs. Slides, magic carpets, and sightseeing vehicles at Chaya Mountain are charged separately. If you don't buy them, hiking is very tiring, which can easily lead to extra expenses. 🚗 Transport & 🏨 Accommodation · Transport: High-speed rail to Zhumadian West Station is preferred. Self-driving is the best choice for cross-county travel. Carpooling to Chaya Mountain costs about CNY 30 per person round trip. · Accommodation: Stay in the Yicheng District downtown area first, where chain hotels cost CNY 120–260 and there are plenty of restaurants and supermarkets. If you want to take night photos, stay at a homestay in the Royal Post Station. Farmhouse inns at the foot of Chaya Mountain have basic conditions and are suitable for entering the scenic area early the next morning. 🍜 Food Spicy soup, Zhumadian braised noodles, Queshan jelly, Runan beef tripe hot pot, and sesame leaf bean noodles.

Chaya Mountain: A Real-Life "Flower and Fruit Mountain" As Zhumadian's only national 5A scenic area, Chaya Mountain is known as the "Central Plains Bonsai." What makes it truly special is the legend that Wu Cheng'en was inspired by its unique rock formations when writing Journey to the West, and the CCTV version of the Journey to the West sequel was also filmed here. The mountain is dotted with lifelike pictographic rocks such as the "Stone Monkey" and the "Sleeping Tang Monk," making it feel like stepping into a natural mythological paradise. You can challenge the "One Line Sky" or take the high-altitude magic carpet to overlook the layered peaks and marvel at nature's extraordinary craftsmanship. Laole Mountain: A Famous Taoist Mountain and Forest Oxygen Bar If you enjoy hiking and tranquil surroundings, Laole Mountain is a great choice. It is the birthplace of the Double Ninth Festival culture, with historical relics like the "Eight Palaces, Two Temples, and One Worship Platform" scattered across the mountain. With a 96% forest coverage rate, the entire mountain acts like a massive natural air conditioner, staying considerably cooler than the city in summer. During the day, you can stroll through the woods and breathe in the fresh air, and at night, you might catch a stunning intangible cultural heritage performance of molten iron fireworks, watching sparks fill the sky for an incredibly atmospheric experience. Jinding Mountain: A Natural Playground for Family Water Fun Jinding Mountain is also a national 4A scenic area with a forest coverage rate of over 95%, living up to its name as a "natural oxygen bar." Its biggest advantage is its proximity to the city center—only about 20 kilometers away—making it a weekend getaway for local families. The canyon rafting in the scenic area is cool and thrilling, and there's also a 5D glass bridge and forest slide, perfect for families looking to enjoy water-based fun together. Royal Post Station: An Ancient-Style Town That Comes Alive at Night Royal Post Station is a 4A scenic area themed around "post station culture," featuring Ming and Qing dynasty architectural styles with blue stone roads and ancient street lanterns, making it an ideal spot for wearing hanfu and taking photos. But its true essence shines at night. As dusk falls, lights flicker on one by one, folk performances take the stage in succession, and the aroma of street food wafts through the air. The blend of ancient and modern vibes will let you experience Zhumadian's most tender summer night romance. Suya Lake: A Romantic Haven for Migratory Birds and Sunsets Suya Lake is the largest man-made reservoir on the plains of Asia, with vast waters that boast the grandeur of a "man-made Dongting Lake." It remains largely undeveloped commercially, preserving its pristine wetland scenery. From November to March each year, hundreds of thousands of migratory birds winter here, creating a spectacular sight. Even outside bird-watching season, watching the sunset by the lake in the evening, as the afterglow paints the entire water surface in shades of orange, is an incredibly beautiful experience. More Options: If you're interested in history and culture, the Zhumadian City Museum (free admission) is a great place to quickly learn about the region's cultural heritage, with its crown jewel being the "Sword of King Fuchai of Wu" from the Spring and Autumn period. Additionally, Nanhai Zen Temple, one of the largest Buddhist temples in Asia, boasts magnificent architecture and offers a moment of tranquility. 🍜 A Taste of Zhumadian: Unmissable Local Flavors Zhumadian's cuisine mirrors the city's character—simple, honest, but full of flavor. The Soul of Breakfast: Spicy & Hot Soup Zhumadian's spicy & hot soup is renowned for being "aromatic, spicy, and rich." The broth is simmered with beef bones and infused with pepper, chili, wood ear mushrooms, and gluten, delivering a spicy and appetizing kick. Locals love pairing it with freshly pan-fried buns or fried dough sticks—one sip of soup, one bite of bread, and you're instantly energized for the day. For an authentic taste, look for time-honored establishments like Ma's Spicy & Hot Soup or Cao Yunhong Spicy & Hot Soup. The Ultimate Summer Rescuer: Queshan Bean Jelly This is the quintessential summer snack etched into every Zhumadian local's memory. Authentic Queshan bean jelly is typically made from local pea or mung bean starch, resulting in a crystal-clear appearance with a smooth, springy, and chewy texture. With its tangy, spicy, and savory flavor, one bowl is all it takes to banish the summer heat. Lao Zhang Bean Jelly Shop on Caishi Street in Queshan County is a century-old, household-name establishment that's well worth a special visit. A Century-Old Classic: Runan Chicken Meatballs This snack has a history of over a hundred years, and its preparation technique has been listed as a municipal-level intangible cultural heritage. Made from hand-pounded free-range chicken breast, the meatballs are springy and smooth, served in a light and savory broth, often accompanied by vermicelli or greens. It's a heartwarming dish suitable for all ages. Tender and Fall-Off-The-Bone Satisfaction: Shangcai Taqiao Pig Trotters Taqiao pig trotters are the signature dish of Shangcai County. Made from premium front pig trotters and braised in a seasoned broth with various Chinese herbs, they are so tender they fall off the bone, rich in collagen yet not greasy, with a savory aroma and a subtle hint of sweetness. They also go by the auspicious nickname "fortune pig trotters"—taking a bite satisfies your cravings while bringing good luck. Irresistibly Addictive Wok Flavor: Runan Beef Tripe Hot Pot This is a municipal-level intangible cultural heritage food in Zhumadian, with a style that sits between hot pot and malatang. Cleaned beef tripe is skewered on bamboo sticks, quickly swished in a broth simmered with Chinese herbs, then coated in sesame paste and chili oil. The tripe is crispy, the broth is flavorful, and the numbing spiciness keeps you coming back for more. Cui Ji Beef Tripe Hot Pot is a well-known local chain, so you can try it with confidence. Other Local Flavors If you still have room, Xincai Dungang Fried Dough Sticks (crispy outside, soft inside, pure carb happiness), Xiping Savory Tofu Pudding (a unique take topped with chicken broth sauce), and Pingyu Sesame Crisp Pancakes (a crunchy and delicious traditional snack) are all flavors locals have grown up with. 💡 Travel Tips Best Time to Visit: Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather. Summer is ideal for escaping the heat at Chaya Mountain and Laole Mountain, while winter is perfect for bird-watching at Suya Lake. Transportation: Zhumadian's attractions are scattered, with Chaya Mountain about 40 kilometers from the city center, so self-driving or hiring a car is the most convenient and flexible option. Suggested Itineraries: 2-Day Highlights Tour: Day 1 – Visit Chaya Mountain in the morning, then Royal Post Station in the afternoon with a night tour; Day 2 – Visit Laole Mountain in the morning, then head to Queshan County for an authentic bowl of bean jelly before heading back. 3-Day In-Depth Tour: Building on the 2-day itinerary, add water fun at Jinding Mountain, or catch the sunset at Suya Lake and explore the museum for historical insights. Zhumadian may not be the kind of city that stuns you at first glance, but its landscapes and cuisine carry a genuine warmth. I hope this guide helps you discover its charm. Have a wonderful trip!

Zhumadian is a famous city nationwide, with a name that is folksy and easy to remember. It was recently a victim of regional stereotyping! Actually, this city has a deep cultural heritage. Runan Prefecture (now Runan County—the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway caused it to lose its status as a regional capital) covered most of its territory. The famous Yuan Shao, Yuan Shu, and the Four Generations, Three Excellencies Yuan family were all from this area. China's first "People's Commune" was also created by the local mountain people here. Within its borders, there is also the revolutionary holy site of Zhugou, known as the "Little Yan'an of the Central Plains." Chaya Mountain is also quite famous nationwide. It is like a bonsai of the Central Plains. Surrounded by plains, the mountain is filled with strange rock formations, offering stunning visuals. No wonder the "Journey to the West" TV series filmed many scenes here.

Most people just crowd around the front of the stone tablet. These few hidden photo spots have fewer people and are full of atmosphere✨ ✅② The tree-lined spot on the side of the stone tablet Avoid the crowds in the front and use the side lighting to photograph the inscriptions. The light and shadow falling on the stone carvings bring out a rich, cultural texture. ✅③ The corner on the west bank of Yuetan Don't just walk along the main path. Go around to the west side of Yuetan, where the lake is exceptionally calm, and you can capture stunning reflections of the ancient architecture. With autumn leaves floating on the water, the scene is incredibly poetic. ✅④ The end of the Cultural Stele Gallery There are few tourists at the end of the long corridor. With rows of stone carvings as a background, it's perfect for taking portraits with a quiet, atmospheric vibe. 📷 Photography tips It's best to go before 9:00 AM or during the golden hour in the evening. For outfits, we recommend new Chinese-style or plain-colored clothing, which fit the ancient-style environment very well. 🚗 Transportation & Tickets Navigation: Runan Tianzhongshan Cultural Park You can take bus No. 2 directly from the county town | Free parking is available for those driving 🎫 Admission is free, and the park is open for visits all day 💬 Interaction: Has anyone visited this "smallest famous mountain in the world"?

In Runan County, Zhumadian, Henan 🌿 I discovered a hidden romantic paradise — Suya Lake 🏞️ Here, a fairy tale unfolds as the sunset melts into the lake Every frame is nature’s proudest masterpiece 🎨 🌅 Best time to watch: 5–7 PM (summer) The sunset slowly sinks into the lake The entire water surface is dyed with a romantic orange-red hue Every shot looks like a blockbuster! 📸 🌊 Tips for visiting: 1. Remember to bring a jacket; it gets windy by the lake in the evening 2. Scout the area in advance to pick the best photo spots 3. Wear light-colored outfits for a more sophisticated look in photos 4. Make sure your phone and camera are fully charged! 💌 Travel reflection: “Some scenery needs no embellishment It stands there as poetry”

Honestly, I advise everyone not to visit Zhumadian in August! I’m afraid you’ll fall in love with this hidden gem in southern Henan 🌿. The cool, healing mountain forests, super low prices, and reliable local food make for a relaxed three-day trip with no gimmicks. You won’t want to leave! I originally thought the small city would be hot and boring in midsummer, but in August the forests are lush and shaded, making off-peak travel a perfect experience. I’ve put together this practical three-day tested guide—just copy it if you want to go 📝✨ 1️⃣ Real three-day travel experience Day 1 · Chaya Mountain water and mountain secret trail ⛰️ Set off at 8 AM for Chaya Mountain, a 5A national geological park. Tickets cost 90 yuan and include a sightseeing bus. It’s a classic filming location for Journey to the West and is praised as a stunning bonsai landscape of central China. The early morning mountain air is cool and pleasant, with green trees surrounding strange peaks and rocks. The air is fresh with no oppressive heat, completely avoiding the summer sun. I recommend taking the one-way cable car up 🚡 to save time and energy while enjoying a panoramic view. Walk down the mountain, stopping to see flowing waterfalls and the “One Line Sky” scenic spot. Wear light-colored casual clothes for photos with the green mountains and unique rocks as your backdrop—every shot looks like a professional photo 📸. Have lunch at 11 AM at a farmhouse restaurant at the foot of the mountain 🥘. Be sure to try the local specialty, clay pot firewood chicken. The chicken is tender and flavorful, and the corn cakes on the pot’s edge soak up the broth. Paired with stir-fried wild vegetables, it’s fresh and appetizing. At about 50 yuan per person, the portions are generous and reasonably priced. At 3 PM, visit Tianmo Lake in the scenic area 🌊. The water is clear and green, surrounded by mountains. You can take a boat ride to fully enjoy the lake and mountain views. The breeze is refreshing, perfect for sitting quietly or strolling along the boardwalk. Return to the city at 6 PM. In the evening, explore the Royal Post ancient-style street district 🏮. This free, replica ancient town is brightly lit and full of traditional charm. Street vendors sell intangible cultural heritage sugar paintings and quaint shops create a rich atmosphere. Stroll the alleys to experience the city’s nighttime vibe and local life. Day 2 · Ancient temple, flower sea, and cultural healing line 🪷 Start at 9 AM at Nanhai Zen Temple, Asia’s largest open Buddhist courtyard. Entry is free with reservation. The 108-meter giant Guanyin statue is solemn and impressive. The pavilions, lotus ponds, and corridors are arranged beautifully. In midsummer, the temple’s lotus flowers are in full bloom 🌺, with shade and cool breezes everywhere. It’s quiet and peaceful with few visitors. Wear a plain long dress for photos by the lotus pond and corridors. The elegant, Zen atmosphere is deeply soothing and comforting. For lunch, head to the old town of Runan for local specialties 🍜. Must-try dishes include Runan crispy fried dough twists, air-dried rabbit meat, and sesame leaf bean noodles. The bean noodles are fragrant and rich in flavor, a genuine local taste enjoyed since childhood. The prices are affordable and authentic. At 2 PM, visit the hometown of Liang Zhu 🎐, a free, popular love-themed street district. The streets are full of butterfly motifs and ancient-style photo walls, hiding the romantic legend of Liang Zhu. The alleys are clean and less crowded, perfect for a leisurely walk and photos. Return to the city in the evening and check out the local night market food stalls 🍢. There’s a wide variety of pan-fried buns, stewed noodles, and grilled gluten snacks. The atmosphere is lively and the value far exceeds that of trendy city night markets. Day 3 · Red culture and old city wrap-up line 🇨🇳 Set off at 8 AM for the Zhugou Revolutionary Memorial Hall, free and open from 9 AM to 5 PM. Known as “Little Yan’an,” the site is well preserved with detailed historical exhibits. There are live red-themed performances at 10 AM and 3 PM daily, offering an immersive experience of revolutionary history. At the exit, try your hand at Zhugou paper-cutting, an intangible cultural heritage craft ✂️. It’s unique and meaningful, great for a memorable photo. For lunch, enjoy an authentic bowl of spicy hot soup with pan-fried buns 🥟. The soup is rich and spicy, and the buns are crispy on the outside and tender inside, a classic Zhumadian breakfast flavor. At 2 PM, visit the Zhumadian City Museum 🏛️, free with reservation. The collection is rich, featuring Spring and Autumn period bronzes and local folk exhibits. The museum is cool and quiet, a great way to avoid the midday heat and immerse yourself in the region’s historical culture. In the evening, pack up and head home. On the way, pick up some Shangcai peanut brittle and local sesame products as souvenirs. They’re affordable, authentic, and reliable 🛍️. 2️⃣ Transportation tips 🚄 Out-of-town visitors should take the high-speed train to Zhumadian West Station. From there, a 15-minute taxi ride takes you directly to the city’s main commercial area—convenient and efficient. Taxi fares within the city start low, making short trips very cost-effective. To reach Chaya Mountain and Nanhai Zen Temple, take the tourist shuttle bus, which goes directly to the scenic entrances, saving money and hassle. Distances between scenic spots are moderate. For groups, carpooling is recommended. It’s cheaper per person than driving yourself and avoids parking troubles, making travel more enjoyable. 3️⃣ Accommodation review 🏨 I stayed at a boutique chain hotel in the city center of Yicheng District. In August peak season, standard rooms cost 240–300 yuan per night. Advantages: excellent location within walking distance of the night market and supermarkets, very convenient for getting around and dining. The room was clean and tidy with good soundproofing and complete basic facilities. There are many breakfast spots downstairs where you can enjoy authentic local snacks in the morning. The value beats most tourist cities. 4️⃣ Travel tips to avoid pitfalls ⚠️ August noon temperatures in Zhumadian are quite high. Be sure to start early and rest at midday. From 11 AM to 3 PM, prioritize indoor venues and ancient temples to avoid outdoor heat. Bring strong sunscreen, cooling sleeves, and a sun hat 🧴. Be cautious with street vendors near scenic spots. For meals, choose reputable farmhouses or old local restaurants with clear pricing and no tricks. Chaya Mountain has many steps and uneven paths. Wear non-slip sports shoes and travel light. Avoid sandals or high heels. Don’t trust low-priced guides or fast-track scams at scenic spots. Just follow the route on your own for a worry-free experience. The mountain has a noticeable temperature difference between morning and evening. Bring a light jacket for evening visits to avoid catching a chill. Personal experience & summary I was truly amazed by Zhumadian in August ✨! I thought the small city would have nothing to offer in midsummer, but it’s a seriously underrated cool, off-the-beaten-path destination. No crowds, no sky-high prices, just cool, healing forests, peaceful ancient temples, authentic and affordable food, and a blend of natural beauty and cultural depth. The three-day itinerary is well balanced, letting you hike, enjoy nature, explore history, and savor local life at a relaxed pace. The advice not to come in August is just to keep this city’s charm a secret and preserve its laid-back vibe. Compared to commercialized trendy cities, Zhumadian’s warmth and sincerity are truly rare! This practical, tested guide with no pitfalls is highly recommended 🌟. Take some time to unlock the gentle charm and local life of central Henan!

Runan day trip guide: a poetic stroll through a thousand-year-old county (budget US$150) At 6:30 AM, as the first ray of sunlight pierced the morning mist, I had already packed my bags, ready to start this long-awaited day trip to Runan. This thousand-year-old county in Zhumadian, Henan, known as the "Center of Heaven," carries a rich history and natural beauty. With a budget capped at US$150, I chose to drive myself for flexibility and cost savings. If you’re looking for a highly cost-effective cultural journey, follow my footsteps to explore Runan’s unique charm. Morning: Tianzhongshan Cultural Park — feel the heartbeat of the “center of the world” history At 8 AM, I arrived at Tianzhongshan Cultural Park right on time. This free park is one of Runan’s proudest landmarks. Legend has it that Duke Zhou measured the sun’s shadow here to determine the earth’s center, making this the “center of the world.” Entering the park, you’re greeted by a grand ancient-style archway inscribed with the three characters “Tianzhongshan,” imposing and majestic. The park is shaded by lush trees with winding paths leading to quiet spots. The morning air is especially fresh, and a few elderly locals practicing Tai Chi add a touch of everyday life. I slowly climbed the stone steps, reaching the summit in about 20 minutes. From the viewing platform, the entire Runan county town unfolds below — scattered houses, winding streets, and the shimmering Suyahu Lake in the distance, forming a peaceful scene. I raised my phone to capture this breathtaking “overlooking all mountains” view and couldn’t help but marvel that such a feng shui treasure lies in the heart of Henan. At the top, a huge “Tianzhong” stone carving attracts many visitors for photos. According to local elders, this was once an ancient imperial site for heaven and earth worship, with every inch steeped in history. After about an hour and a half of touring, I reluctantly left. The park also features informational panels on ancient geography and culture, detailing the origin of “Tianzhong,” perfect for history enthusiasts to linger and read. If you enjoy hiking, wear comfortable shoes — the steps aren’t steep but are winding and full of charm. Noon: Suyahu Wetland — find peace of mind in nature At 11 AM, I drove to Suyahu Wetland. This is Asia’s largest man-made plain lake and now a haven for migratory birds. No admission fee is required; just park by the lake and immerse yourself in this vast wetland world. The lake stretches endlessly, with reeds swaying in the breeze. Occasionally, a few egrets skim the water, creating ripples. November is the best season for birdwatching here, with flocks of geese and wild ducks resting — some swimming on the water, others circling in the sky, creating a spectacular scene. I found a quiet spot, took out my binoculars, and quietly observed these delicate creatures, as if the whole world slowed down. Approaching noon, my stomach started growling. I had already scoped out a lakeside farmhouse restaurant. Walking into a small place called “Lakeside Home,” the owner greeted me warmly. Their signature fish soup uses crucian carp freshly caught from Suyahu, slow-cooked with mountain spring water. The soup is milky white and deliciously fresh. I also ordered a plate of stir-fried wild vegetables, said to be picked fresh from local fields early in the morning — tender, crisp, and naturally fragrant. Two dishes and a soup with rice cost exactly US$7.50. Sitting under the lakeside pavilion, enjoying the lake breeze and authentic farmhouse food, this meal felt especially comforting. Afternoon: Nanhai Zen Temple — the awe and tranquility of Asia’s largest Buddhist temple At 2 PM, I entered Nanhai Zen Temple with reverence. Located southeast of Runan county town, this temple covers over 300 acres and is Asia’s largest Buddhist temple. Admission is US$6, a great value. Passing through the mountain gate, I was immediately struck by the grandeur of the Mahavira Hall, housing a several-meter-tall statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, golden and majestic. The temple complex features Ming and Qing dynasty architectural styles, with flying eaves, bracket sets, and carved beams, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship in every detail. I slowly walked along the central axis, visiting the Hall of Heavenly Kings, Guanyin Hall, and the Sutra Library. The temple was bustling with worshippers kneeling in devotion. I lit an incense stick and silently made a wish before the Buddha. The temple’s garden design was a delightful surprise — rockeries, flowing water, corridors, and flowers arranged harmoniously, creating scenic spots everywhere. When tired, I rested on a stone bench in the corridor, listening to the wind chime bells at the eaves, feeling my soul cleansed and peaceful. After about two hours, I left reluctantly. The temple also houses a 108-meter-tall bronze Buddha statue, said to be Asia’s tallest indoor Buddha. Standing before it and looking up at its solemn expression made me feel small and humbled. Evening: Liangzhu hometown — find cultural roots in a love legend At 4:30 PM, I drove to Liangzhu hometown. This free attraction, located on the western outskirts of Runan county town, is the origin of the love legend of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai. Entering the park, you see a giant stone sculpture of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai dancing gracefully, lifelike and vivid. The park also features Liangzhu’s tomb and Butterfly Pavilion, each bearing marks of this tragic love story. As the sun set, golden light bathed the tomb, adding romance and melancholy. I lingered at the Butterfly Pavilion, imagining the lovers transforming into butterflies and flying away, feeling deeply moved. After the visit, I returned to town to try Runan’s local snacks. Street vendors offered chicken meatballs, boiled beef tripe, and grilled gluten with enticing aromas. I ordered US$1.50 worth of chicken meatballs — crispy outside, tender inside, dipped in special chili sauce with rich layers of flavor. The boiled beef tripe was even more impressive — thinly sliced, briefly cooked in boiling broth, then dipped in sesame sauce and garlic paste. It was crisp and chewy, irresistible. This snack meal cost only US$4.50 but was full of happiness. Return trip: summary and reflections At 6:30 PM, I set off for home. Looking back at this small town, I felt reluctant to leave. The total cost of this Runan day trip was as follows: US$15 for fuel, US$6 for admission, US$7.50 for lunch, US$4.50 for snacks, and US$7.50 for some local specialties (such as sesame leaves and hollow noodles) as souvenirs, totaling US$40. Even if you choose high-speed rail plus public transport, the total cost won’t exceed US$60, well within a US$150 budget. If two people travel together and share fuel or transport costs, it’s even more economical. Runan, this ancient city forgotten by time, offered me a perfect day through its history, nature, and food. It lacks the noise and bustle of big cities but has its own tranquility and depth. If you want a weekend getaway that’s not too far, with culture and scenery, Runan is definitely worth a special trip. Take this guide and start your Runan journey — trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

When traveling with kids, the hotel really matters! This time, I chose the right hotel in Zhumadian. It not only has a children's play area but also provides kids' toiletries and slippers. The breakfast even has a dedicated children's dining area. My child was very happy staying there, and I felt much more at ease. Zhumadian as a city gave me so many surprises. I was just passing through but ended up staying for three days and didn’t want to leave. There are mountains, water, and culture here. The food is especially cheap, and the people are very warm and friendly. It’s truly an underrated destination for family trips. For a family trip in Zhumadian, the first day can be spent at Chaya Mountain. Chaya Mountain is really the top choice for family hiking. The mountain isn’t high, the difficulty is low, and the scenery is especially beautiful. It’s recommended to start early to avoid crowds. The scenic area has many elements from Journey to the West because it’s one of the filming locations. Telling the kids the story of Journey to the West makes them very interested. On the way up, you can see many unique rocks that look like monkeys, turtles, and elephants. The kids enjoy looking at them all along the way and don’t feel tired at all. Tianmo Lake is a must-visit; the scenery by the lake is stunning, and you can ride a bamboo raft for 60 yuan per person, which the kids love. The mountain slide is a must-try too. Sliding down from the mountain is very thrilling, and the kids wanted to go again after the first time. · -- The second day can be dedicated to cultural and leisure activities. In the morning, visit Nanhai Zen Temple, and in the afternoon, explore the Royal Post Station. Nanhai Zen Temple is truly impressive, with grand scale and exquisite architecture. Walking around with kids here to experience Buddhist culture is very meaningful. The temple is very quiet, without much commercialization, allowing people to calm their minds. For lunch, try local specialties in Runan, such as chicken meatballs and boiled beef tripe, which are very delicious. In the afternoon, return to the city center to rest, then visit the Royal Post Station in the evening. The Royal Post Station becomes more beautiful at night when the lights come on. The ancient street offers many intangible cultural heritage experiences like sugar painting, dough figurines, and paper cutting. Kids can try making these themselves, which is very meaningful. The evening iron flower performance is a must-see; it’s truly breathtaking and an unforgettable experience for a lifetime. · -- The third day can be a slow city tour. In the morning, visit the Zhumadian Museum, and in the afternoon, stroll through a park. Although the Zhumadian Museum is not large, it has a rich collection of exhibits, including many precious cultural relics. It’s educational for kids to learn about the culture of the Central Plains. The museum also has interactive installations where kids can engage hands-on, learning while playing. For lunch, try local home-style dishes like stewed vermicelli and braised meat pot, which are authentic southern Henan flavors. In the afternoon, visit Zhidi Park or Xizhong Park, both free with excellent environments. Take a walk with the kids, feed the fish, and relax. Xizhong Park also features karst landforms with strange peaks and rocks, as well as garden landscapes blending Central Plains cultural elements. Visiting in the early morning or at dusk, the light and shadows on the streams and bamboo groves make for stunning photos. · -- Zhumadian’s food is truly a treasure. Besides the famous dishes, there are many small shops hidden in alleys. For breakfast, besides spicy soup, there’s “sa tang,” an egg soup made with chicken broth that’s especially delicious and perfect with fried dough sticks. Fenjiang noodles are a specialty of Zhumadian, made from mung bean fermented batter, giving the noodles a sour taste that’s very appetizing. Many outsiders may not be used to it, but locals love it. There are also various braised delicacies like braised chicken, duck, and pig’s trotters, all stewed until tender and flavorful. The night market is a must-visit, offering grilled skewers, hot pot vegetables, and fried noodles with a wide variety and very cheap prices. You can eat very well for just a few dozen yuan. Traveling with kids in Zhumadian doesn’t require a very detailed itinerary. The city’s pace is slow, perfect for leisurely exploration. The people here are very warm and patient when you ask for directions. Prices are very low; accommodation and meals are affordable. A family of three can enjoy three days here with just 1,000 yuan. Anyone who says there’s nothing fun in Zhumadian, I’m telling you, I’m upset with you! I spent three days here with my kid and completely fell in love with this small city in southern Henan. The strange mountains and unique rocks of Chaya Mountain, the ancient-style night scenery of the Royal Post Station, the grandeur of Nanhai Zen Temple, and the super cheap and delicious southern Henan cuisine— all for about 500 RMB per person for a great time. Choosing the right hotel made it even better. This hotel not only has a great location and new facilities but also very thoughtful service. My kid was especially happy staying there. Zhumadian is truly an underrated treasure city for family trips—few people, beautiful scenery, low prices. It’s perfect for a weekend getaway with kids. Chaya Mountain is really perfect for hiking with kids. Known as the bonsai of Central China, the mountain isn’t high and the paths are easy to walk, so kids can complete the whole hike on their own. The entrance ticket is 70 RMB, and children under 1.4 meters are free. I recommend entering from the south gate, taking the sightseeing bus up the mountain for 13 RMB per person, then walking down slowly. The scenery along the way is especially beautiful, with strange peaks and oddly shaped rocks. My kid kept asking what kind of stones they were, very curious. Black Wind Cave, Water Curtain Cave, and One Line Sky each have stories. Tell your kids the legends from Journey to the West while exploring—learning while playing. The scenery at Tianmo Lake is stunning, with clear water reflecting the mountains, perfect for photos. I suggest going around 4 or 5 PM, stroll through the ancient street, take photos, and then enjoy the night view after dark. When night falls and the lights come on, the whole ancient street is brilliantly lit, as if traveling back to a post station from a thousand years ago. There are many performances on the street, including Hanfu parades, folk shows, and iron flower displays, making it very lively. The iron flower show is a must-see: molten iron at 1600 degrees is thrown into the air, turning into a sky full of sparks—truly breathtaking. My kid watched in awe. There are also many snacks on the street, like grilled skewers, cold noodles, and sugar paintings—perfect for eating while strolling. A boat ride costs 20 RMB per person, cruising the river to see the night scenery on both sides, very romantic. Hanfu experience starts at 38 RMB, dress your kid in Hanfu for photos to fully immerse in the atmosphere. · -- Nanhai Zen Temple is a must-visit, one of the largest Buddhist temples in Asia, located in Runan County, about a 20-kilometer drive from the city center. The Mahavira Hall is truly stunning, covering 6,400 square meters, the largest Mahavira Hall in the world, certified by the Guinness World Records. The entire temple complex is grand, with exquisite architecture and bustling incense offerings. Walking around with your kid here, you can feel the Buddhist culture and find it very calming. There are many pigeons in the temple; bring some bread to feed them—kids love it. The ticket is 40 RMB, free for children under 1.4 meters, very cost-effective. After visiting the temple, you can try the local specialty chicken meatballs in Runan, with fresh and delicious soup and bouncy meatballs—very tasty. · -- Food in Zhumadian is really cheap, about 20 RMB per person to eat until full. For breakfast, you must try spicy pepper soup with water-fried buns, only 5 RMB to fill you up. Bai Ji Spicy Pepper Soup is very famous, sour and spicy with plenty of ingredients, and the water-fried buns are crispy outside and tender inside—so satisfying with every bite. Queshan cold noodles are a summer refreshment, 10 RMB per serving, sour, spicy, smooth, and chewy, delicious even from street vendors. Laojiekou stewed vermicelli is a local home-style dish, soft and flavorful vermicelli that goes perfectly with rice—you can easily eat two bowls, about 15 RMB per person. There are also various southern Henan specialties like clay pot soup, braised meat, and Nanwan fish, all reliably delicious. The prices are really amazing; a meal for a family of three can be very good for just 50 to 60 RMB. There are many fun places in the city center too. The Zhumadian Museum is free to enter with advance reservation, closed on Mondays. The museum has many national treasure-level artifacts; it’s meaningful to take your kid to learn about Zhumadian’s history and culture. Tianzhong Square is free, featuring the city landmark Pangu sculpture. Take your kid for photos and a stroll to experience the local leisurely lifestyle. Zhidi Park is a hidden green oasis in the city, shaded by trees with clear lakes—perfect for a relaxing walk and feeding fish with your kid. Zhumadian may sound unfamiliar, but its predecessor—Runing Prefecture—was the heart of the ancient Jiuzhou region known as Yuzhou. Outside the north gate of this ancient city stands a stone bridge called Hongji Bridge, which has withstood over 500 years of wind and rain, remaining as sturdy as ever. The bridge deck is not wide, but it bears deep wheel ruts worn by passing carts. These are witnesses to the caravans and merchant teams that once traveled back and forth—the sounds of horses neighing, carts clattering, and merchants shouting seem to still echo at the bridgehead. Now that the bustling scene has faded, Hongji Bridge quietly spans the river, continuing to carry the weight of time and the daydreams of every passerby. If you come to Zhumadian, be sure to make a special trip to visit this ancient bridge. Stand on the bridge, look down at those ancient wheel marks, and look up to imagine the prosperity of Runing City's north gate back then—this is probably the meaning of travel: hearing the voice of history in silent relics. 📍 Location: Zhumadian City (near the north gate of the former Runing Prefecture) ⏳ Era: Ming Dynasty, over 500 years ago 📌 Highlights: Wheel ruts, ancient bridge structure, remnants of the ancient city layout

Since 221 BC, Henan has never been peaceful, enduring various imperial power struggles for 800 years until the end of the Northern and Southern Dynasties, only entering its peak during the Tang Empire. The Henan Museum displays historical artifacts from the Qin, Han, Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties in a single exhibition hall. One reason is Henan’s long history—800 years can only fit into one hall. Another reason is that this period was extremely chaotic in the Central Plains, with many emperors and lords, and even more rebellions, resulting in fewer unearthed artifacts (most were destroyed). ✅ Henan during the Qin, Han, Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties 📌 Qin Dynasty: After Qin unified China, it implemented the commandery-county system. Henan was divided into seven commanderies: Sanchuan (capital Luoyang), Yingchuan (capital Yangzhai), Chen (capital Chen County), Dang (capital Suiyang), Nanyang (capital Wan County), Henei (capital Yewang), and Dong (capital Puyang), becoming an important support region for the Qin Empire. 📌 Western Han: Henan belonged to the Sili Xiaowei division and five provinces: Yu, Yan, Jing, Yang, and Ji, with Luoyang as a key eastern city. Early Western Han implemented a dual system of commanderies and kingdoms. The Liang Kingdom (capital Suiyang) was an important vassal state. During Emperor Jing’s reign, King Xiao of Liang, Liu Wu, made great contributions during the “Rebellion of the Seven States,” strengthening the kingdom. 📌 Eastern Han: The Eastern Han capital was Luoyang, making Henan the political, economic, and cultural center of the country. Nanyang was the hometown of Emperor Guangwu Liu Xiu and was designated the Southern Capital, alongside Luoyang, known as “Imperial Capital and Imperial Hometown.” At the end of the Eastern Han, Emperor Xian moved the capital to Xuchang (modern Xuchang). Cao Cao “held the emperor to command the lords,” making Xuchang one of the five capitals of Cao Wei. 📌 Cao Wei: Cao Pi replaced the Han and established Wei, with Luoyang as the capital and Xuchang as one of the five capitals. Cao Wei implemented the tuntian system in Henan to restore agricultural production, making Luoyang the political center of the north. (Most of Henan belonged to Cao Wei; Nanyang was an important base for Shu Han’s northern expeditions, while Eastern Wu controlled parts of southern Henan). Thus, Henan itself was a place where the Three Kingdoms coexisted. 📌 Western Jin: The Western Jin capital was Luoyang. Within Henan, seven fiefdoms were established: Nanyang, Liang, Runan, Puyang, Yiyang, Dongping, and Qiao, with royal family members enfeoffed based on blood relation proximity and seniority. 📌 Eastern Jin and the Sixteen Kingdoms: The Eastern Jin held the south, while northern Henan was alternately controlled by Former Qin, Later Zhao, Ran Wei, Former Yan, and other regimes. The south belonged to the Eastern Jin. This period was marked by frequent wars, with Henan becoming the focal point of north-south power struggles. (The most chaotic era began). 📌 Northern and Southern Dynasties: After Northern Wei unified the north, Emperor Xiaowen moved the capital to Luoyang and promoted sinicization policies. Luoyang became the political, economic, and cultural center of the north. The Northern Wei Luoyang city was vast, with well-planned palace and residential layouts. Buddhism flourished, with famous buildings like the Yongning Temple Pagoda. Eastern Wei and Northern Qi had their capital at Ye City (modern Anyang), while Northern Zhou controlled western Henan. Looking at this history, Henan was never “unified” under a single regime after the Qin and Han, and was a major victim of feudal civil wars. ✅ Museum Treasure: Gold-threaded Jade Burial Suit 📌 The museum’s gold-threaded jade burial suit dates to the late Western Han and was unearthed in 1985 from Tomb No. 1 at Xishan, Yongcheng, Henan. The tomb owner was a Western Han Liang King. 📌 The jade suit consists of five parts: head, jacket, pants, hands, and shoes, made up of 2,008 pieces of green jade connected by gold threads. Most jade pieces are green jade, with some Xiuyan jade or Hetian jade. 📌 The gold-threaded jade suit symbolized the noble status of Han dynasty aristocrats, reflecting the burial belief of “treating death as life” and the superstition that jade could preserve the body from decay. Its use was closely tied to the Han hierarchical system: emperors wore gold-threaded suits, princes wore silver or copper-threaded suits. From the Han dynasty onward, jade shifted from ornamentation to burial use, and jade culture gradually became part of Han cultural and religious beliefs. ✅ Visiting Tips 📌 The Henan Museum is very popular; it is recommended to visit during off-peak hours or change the visiting order (for example, start from the fourth floor). 📌 Address: No. 8 Nongye Road, Jinshui District, Zhengzhou City, Henan Province. 📌 Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 AM to 8:30 PM (last entry at 7:30 PM). Closed on Mondays (except national holidays). 📌 Transportation suggestions: Metro Line 2: Exit at Guan Hutun Station, Exit C, walk west along Nongye Road about 800 meters (about 10 minutes) to the museum. Metro Line 7: Exit at Nongye University Station, Exit D, walk east along Nongye Road about 500 meters to the museum. Buses: Take B11, B102, B18, B2, S158, G83, etc., get off at “Henan Museum Station” or “Nongye Road Wenbo East Road Station,” then walk to the museum. 📌 The museum has a parking lot with free parking (usually full during holidays). It is recommended to plan parking in advance to avoid congestion during peak times.

If you don’t want to squeeze into trendy ancient towns or see the same old commercial streets, come to Runan. This low-key, almost unknown thousand-year-old county hides the most authentic ancient charm and everyday life of Central China. It is a millennium-old county in China, the hometown of the Butterfly Lovers (Liang Zhu), and the gentle “granary” and “fishing capital” of southern Henan. Here you’ll find Asia’s largest plain reservoir, Suya Lake, the Nanhai Zen Temple known as “Asia’s foremost monastery,” and the Wuying Pagoda, standing for a thousand years with no shadow at noon on the summer solstice... No need to rush or crowd; a one-day micro-trip lets you understand this silent yet profound small city in the heart of China. 🌿 Six Must-Visit Ancient Sites and Scenic Spots 1⃣ Wuying Pagoda | A Tang Dynasty Architectural Wonder with No Shadow for a Thousand Years Commonly called the “Shadowless Pagoda,” it is a national-level cultural heritage site, simple and majestic, quietly aged. The most amazing feature is the natural phenomenon of having **no shadow at noon on the winter and summer solstices**, showcasing ancient wisdom that amazes visitors. A mountain’s fame lies not in height but in cultural heritage. 4⃣ Beiguan Hongji Bridge + Gongbei City Gate | 500 Years of Ming Dynasty Charm A five-arch ancient stone bridge spanning the Ru River, with stone lions on the pillars each showing different expressions, and exquisitely carved railings. Still sturdy after centuries of weathering, standing on the bridge you can almost hear the sounds of old carriages and horses. 5⃣ Hometown of Liang Zhu | The Timeless Love Story of the Butterfly Lovers This is the true origin of the Liang Zhu legend. Stories of oath-taking at Caociao and the eighteen farewells spread nationwide from here. The tomb mound, White-Robed Pavilion, Love Corridor, and Lovers’ Bridge—all tell a tale of eternal romance. 6⃣ Suya Lake | A Northern Migratory Bird Paradise with Golden Sunset Asia’s largest plain reservoir, vast and misty. Watch the sunset, take a speedboat ride, and birdwatch—romantic and relaxing. 💡 Super Practical Travel Tips 1. Suya Lake’s circumference is about 80 km; no need to circle the whole lake, the east bank embankment offers the best views. 2.
