Beyond the Amalfi Coast: The Ultimate Puglia & Salento Escape 🇮🇹🍋✨
Forget the crowded tourist traps! If you want to experience the authentic, sun-drenched soul of southern Italy, you need to head to Puglia (Apulia) and the Salento peninsula. From dramatic limestone cliffs to fairytale villages, this region feels like stepping into a cinematic masterpiece. 🌊🌅
Here is your ultimate visual guide to the heel of Italy's boot:
🗺️ Must-do Route & Highlights:
🔹 Alberobello: You absolutely cannot miss this UNESCO World Heritage site! Walking among the iconic cone-shaped Trulli houses feels like wandering through a real-life fairytale.
🔹 Polignano a Mare: Famous for its dramatic cliffside views and crashing waves. Watching the sunset paint the sky pink over the ancient houses built right into the rock is pure magic.
🔹 Ostuni (The White City): A dazzling maze of whitewashed streets and staircases perched on a hill. It offers sweeping views of the olive groves rolling down to the Adriatic Sea.
🔹 Lecce: Often called the "Florence of the South," thanks to its breathtakingly detailed Baroque architecture. The churches here are true masterpieces carved from golden stone.
📸 Top Photo Spots:
Head to the harbor in Monopoli or Giovinazzo early in the morning to capture the iconic blue fishing boats bobbing in the water (no crowds!). For Alberobello, explore the quieter Aia Piccola district to get those unobstructed, dreamy shots of the Trulli roofs without the tourist masses.
📝 Practical Tips:
· Getting around: Renting a car is highly recommended. Public transport exists but can be slow, and driving gives you the freedom to explore hidden beaches. 🚗
· Best time to go: May, June, and September. You’ll get the perfect Mediterranean warmth but avoid the intense August heat and peak local holiday crowds. ☀️
· Footwear: Bring comfortable, non-slip sneakers. The ancient stone streets (especially in Ostuni and Lecce) get incredibly slippery, and you will be walking a lot!
⚠️ Precautions:
Many local shops and restaurants strictly observe riposo (the Italian siesta) between 1:30 PM and 5:00 PM. Plan your heavy meals and shopping accordingly!
Which of these spots would you explore first? The fairytale Trulli houses or the cliffside views? Let me know below! 👇😍

Coffee Farm in Colombia ☕️ Finca El Ocaso
A coffee farm in the Quindío region, a 20-minute walk from the colonial town of Salento. Arabica is grown here on slopes shaded by banana palms, and tours cover the full production cycle — from seedling to cup.
The tour lasts two and a half hours and is conducted in English and Spanish. Guests walk through the plantation, wash and dry beans, and finish with a tasting of freshly brewed coffee on a veranda overlooking the Cocora Valley. Visitors can pick their own small harvest and follow its processing.
Salento itself is a place of character: brightly colored facades, craft shops, and the gateway to the Cocora Valley with its towering wax palms. The journey here takes an hour by bus from Armenia.
Prices:
· Farm tour — COP 30,000 ($7.5)
· Cup of coffee on the veranda — COP 5,000 ($1.2)
· Armenia–Salento bus — COP 19,000 ($4.7)

✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️
The jeeps in Salento can be so crowded that there is no room to move! To play enough special, do not want to sit in a boring seat, the rear standing position and co-driver position is the first choice ~
📍Ride Strategy:
✨️ Co-pilot: up to 2 people, enough space, superb visibility! I was lucky enough to be able to sit on 3 of the 4 round trips that day, so I didn't have to fight to see the beautiful scenery
😎 Rear standing area: up to 3 ~ 4 people, must hold the handrail! The mountain road is bumpy. If you are not careful, you will stumble. Don't let go
🥵 Inside the cabin: Regular seats are crowded, especially more than 10 people, it is recommended to arrive early to grab a seat

Salento, Colombia|A Must-Visit for Coffee Lovers!
Located in the heart of Colombia's Coffee Triangle, Salento is a paradise for coffee enthusiasts. The coffee experience here is undoubtedly the highlight, but as for the food, it's best to keep your expectations in check.
Highly recommend joining a local coffee plantation tour or visiting the town's charming coffee shops to savor some exceptional coffee. However, the local cuisine might leave you a bit disappointed. After trying a few restaurants in town, the flavors and textures were underwhelming. It's best not to expect too much—just grab a simple bite to fill your stomach.

Strolling through a coffee plantation in Salento, Colombia
Located in the heart of Colombia's Coffee Triangle, Salento is a must-visit for coffee enthusiasts. Joining a local coffee plantation tour is highly recommended!
In mid-November, Salento's gentle rain adds a refreshing touch to the coffee plantations, creating a unique experience. 📌 Tips:
· Wear non-slip shoes! The mountain paths can be steep, making it easier to navigate while picking coffee beans.

Complete Guide to Hiking and Horseback Riding in Cocora Valley, Colombia
Cocora Valley 🌴 in Colombia offers visitors the chance to explore the world's tallest wax palm trees through hiking or horseback riding, depending on your physical ability and interests.
1️⃣ Hiking ⛰️
Hiking is the most popular way to explore Cocora Valley, ideal for those with good stamina who want to delve deep into the cloud forest.
Route Options:
· Full Loop: Approximately 10-14 km in length, taking around 5-7 hours to complete.
· Direct to Palms: If you're short on time, you can walk directly to the main viewpoints (Miradors), which takes about 60 minutes one way.
✨ Challenges and Essentials:
· Trail Conditions: The paths can become extremely muddy and slippery due to rain, so it's essential to wear professional waterproof hiking boots or rent rain boots locally.
· Altitude: Some sections exceed 2,700 meters above sea level, so be mindful of altitude sickness.

Horseback riding is perfect for those who prefer not to walk long distances or want to experience the valley's stunning scenery in a shorter time.
✨ Highlights:
· A professional guide will accompany you (either walking or riding alongside), leading you through rivers, forests, and to the viewpoints. It's safe even for beginners, as the horses are usually gentle and familiar with the trails.
· 💰 Cost: Prices vary depending on the length of the trip and whether it includes a guide or transportation.
Best Time to Visit: It's recommended to start your journey between 7:00 and 8:00 AM from Salento by jeep to avoid afternoon fog, thunderstorms, and crowds.
Gear: Regardless of your chosen activity, be sure to bring a raincoat, sunscreen, plenty of water, snacks, and cash.

The colourful town Finca
City: Salento, Colombia 🇨🇴
Where is it: north west of Bogota the capital, in the north of South America
What’s special ✨: Finca means farm/local village. There are many local fincas in Colombia and this one in Salento is famous for its colourful buildings, its coffee farms and tranquility in the area. Shops close pretty early (it’s not a busy area and hence the quietness). Also if you like plants you can spot a lot here!

FROM BEAN TO CUP ☕️.⠀
⠀
Did you know that an average worker in a coffee farm can pick up to 100kg of ripe coffee cherries PER DAY?!⠀
⠀
This is the staggering amount we learned is normally collected by individual pickers (by hand!) during the two picking seasons the Ocasa Coffee Plantation sees every year. We spent an afternoon exploring the sights, sounds and smells of the Ocasa Coffee Plantation to learn all about how our favourite cup o’ Joe is made. From planting the seed, to picking the ripe cherries and sorting the beans, we learned heaps about the process and admire the work that goes into producing coffee beans so much more!⠀

Colombia Cocora Valley: Wax Palm Forest Loop near Salento Coffee Town
#itinerarycheck Did this as a half-day from Salento in March. Willys jeeps leave the main plaza from ~7 am; I paid 8,000 COP each way (cash only, no card at the booth). Entry to the valley 5,000 COP, private-land boundary 6,000 COP, Acaime hummingbird stop ~5,000 COP for hot chocolate. Total <30,000 COP. Took the 7:00 jeep, arrived 7:25, started hiking 7:40 counterclockwise: first hour flat through cattle pasture and the iconic 60 m Ceroxylon wax palms in low mist (best light, zero tour buses), then climbed into cloud forest, crossed two rope bridges over Río Quindío, hit Acaime at 2,800 m around 10:30, looped back down through the palm grove by 12:30. Total 5 hrs with photo stops.
Lessons: counterclockwise means you earn the palm climax at the end instead of trudging past it tired at hour 1. Waterproof boots non-negotiable — the cloud-forest section had ankle-deep clay and a knee-deep stream crossing; I wore trail runners and squelched for 2 hrs. Last Willys back is ~6 pm; miss it and you walk 9 km to Salento or pay a farmer. Rainy season (Apr–Nov) turns the climb into a bog. Bring 1.5 L water, snacks (nothing sold past Acaime except trout back in Salento, 18–25k COP plate on Calle Real).
Biggest debate: is the loop alone enough, or should you add a Finca El Ocaso coffee tour same afternoon? I did both — coffee tour at 2 pm, 30k COP, 2.5 hrs, worth it for context on why this valley is protected.
What’s your call — palms-only morning, or pair it with a finca?

🌴 Cocora Valley | Walking Among the Giants of Colombia
Hidden in the heart of Colombia's Coffee Cultural Landscape, Cocora Valley (Valle de Cocora) is home to the world's tallest palm trees—the magnificent Quindío wax palms. Reaching heights of up to 60 metres, these towering giants rise gracefully above the misty mountains, earning the nickname "the giraffes of the plant kingdom."
A hike through Cocora Valley feels like stepping into a dream. Rolling emerald hills, drifting clouds, and countless wax palms stretching towards the sky create an otherworldly landscape unlike anywhere else on Earth. Looking up, it almost seems as if the palms are touching the clouds themselves.
As Colombia's national tree, the Quindío wax palm is a symbol of the country's natural heritage, and the iconic scenery of Cocora Valley is even featured on the reverse side of Colombia's 100,000-peso banknote.
📍 Location: Cocora Valley, Salento, Quindío Department, Colombia
🌴 Highlight: Home to the world's tallest palm trees and one of Colombia's most iconic landscapes
🏞️ Feature: Quindío wax palms, rolling green valleys, cloud forests, hiking trails, mountain scenery, and rich biodiversity
🍃 Atmosphere: Dreamlike, peaceful, and breathtaking
📸 Best for: Hiking, landscape photography, nature lovers, and unforgettable outdoor adventures
✨ Signature feeling: Walking beneath towering wax palms that seem to reach into the clouds, where every step feels like wandering through a living fairytale.

🌴 The Tallest Palm Trees in the World? I Had to See Them to Believe It!
Photos of Colombia’s Cocora Valley simply don’t do it justice. Standing beneath these giant wax palms soaring into the clouds, you instantly realize just how tiny you are.
But here’s the reality of hiking here—it is wildly unpredictable:
☀️ The Weather: One minute you're basking in sunshine, the next you’re sprinting for your rain jacket.
🥵 The Pro-Tip: Do NOT skip sunscreen! I left with a sunburned face on a fully overcast day. Because of the high altitude in the Andes, those UV rays are absolutely unforgiving—even through the thickest clouds.
🦜 The Magic: Keep your eyes peeled. I spotted a colorful parrot peeking out from a hollow in an ancient trunk—its own little high-rise apartment in the sky!
Essential Tips for Your Visit:
Getting There: Take one of the colorful Willy jeeps from the main square in Salento. They leave early and fill up fast.
The Route: You can walk straight to the main palm viewpoints (about 30-45 minutes) or do the full 5-6 hour loop through the cloud forest and swinging bridges.
When to Go: Arrive as early as possible (around 7:00 AM) to beat the crowds and catch the valley before the afternoon fog rolls in.
Entrance Fees: Bring cash! The valley is divided into private properties, and you will need to pay small entrance fees (around a few dollars) at different checkpoints.

Salento Viewpoints — Coffee Hills and Endless Green Valleys 🌿⛰️
Above Salento, several small viewpoints scattered around the hills offer wide views over the coffee region and the surrounding Andes.
One of the most visited is the Mirador Alto de la Cruz, reached by a short but steep climb of stairs from town. From the top, you can see Salento’s colorful rooftops below, framed by green mountains, farmland, and coffee plantations stretching into the distance.
The atmosphere at the viewpoints is calm and open. Early mornings are often misty, with clouds moving through the valleys, while afternoons can reveal clearer views of the layered hills and rural landscape.
From these heights, Salento feels very compact — a small cluster of bright houses surrounded by vast natural scenery. The contrast between the town’s colorful streets and the quiet agricultural landscape around it is especially noticeable.
Many visitors use the viewpoints as a first stop before heading toward the Cocora Valley or nearby trails, making them a natural introduction to the region’s geography.
Salento’s viewpoints are not about dramatic cliffs or extreme altitude. Their value is in the gentle perspective over a living coffee landscape, where nature and small-town life blend into one continuous view.

The town sits among green hills covered with coffee plantations, creating a setting that feels calm, fresh, and rural. Its streets are lined with traditional wooden houses painted in vivid colors, often with carved balconies and decorative details that give Salento a distinctive identity.
The central square, Plaza de Bolívar (Salento), acts as the social and geographic heart of the town. From here, everything is within walking distance — cafés, viewpoints, small shops, and local restaurants.
Salento is also the main base for visiting nearby natural attractions, especially the Cocora Valley, where tall wax palms grow across dramatic green landscapes. Many travelers pass through the town on their way to hikes and viewpoints.
Despite its popularity, Salento keeps a slow and small-town atmosphere. Mornings are quiet, afternoons are lively with visitors, and evenings return to a peaceful mountain-town mood.
Salento is not about monuments or large attractions — it is about color, coffee culture, and the experience of living inside a small Andean town surrounded by nature.

Salento Central Square — The Calm Heart of the Coffee Region 🏘️🌿
In Salento, the main square, Plaza de Bolívar (Salento), is a small but lively focal point of town life in the Colombian coffee region.
The square is surrounded by colorful colonial-style houses with wooden balconies, small cafés, handicraft shops, and local restaurants. The architecture is simple but bright, giving the town its well-known relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
At the center of the plaza stands a small park with trees, benches, and a statue of Simón Bolívar. It’s a place where locals and visitors naturally gather before or after exploring nearby attractions like the Cocora Valley.
The rhythm of the square is slow and peaceful. During the day, it fills with tourists, coffee shops, and conversations. In the evenings, it becomes quieter, with warm lights and a calm mountain-town feel.
One of its defining features is how walkable and compact everything is. From the square, almost all of Salento can be reached on foot within minutes.
Plaza de Bolívar in Salento is not grand or monumental — instead, it represents the simple, colorful, and social heart of a small Andean town surrounded by coffee-covered hills.
