#easytravelpost Ihlara’s 14 km canyon is the Cappadocia that isn’t about balloons. I drove Göreme→Aksaray→Ihlara village, paid 150–200 TL (or €15 foreign) at the upper stair, descended 300 steps to the Melendiz, and walked 4 km downstream to Belisırma—2 hrs, 105 rock-cut churches in the walls, Ağaçaltı and Sümbüllü still with red-blue frescoes if the padlock’s off. Belisırma is the meadow stop: plane trees, a footbridge, and 4–5 riverside platforms serving alabalık (trout) for ~350 TL set lunch with ayran. I ate, then continued 1 hr to the Selime Monastery turnoff and taxi’d back (pre-arranged with the platform owner, 400 TL/car). The river was ankle-deep in August, thigh-deep in April—season decides your shoes. No card at the stair booth, TL cash; Belisırma restaurants take cards but tip cash. Mistake: I started at noon and baked on the open meadow stretches—8 a.m. start, 2 L water. Another: I wore trail runners on the stair descent and my knees paid; poles help. Would you walk Ihlara→Belisırma→Selime full 14 km, or do the 4 km in and taxi back for the light?

#easytravelpost Most Cappadocia visitors balloon over Göreme and skip Ihlara—mistake. I drove Göreme→Aksaray→Ihlara village (1.5 hrs), paid the 150–200 TL entry at the upper stair (or €15 foreign rate), and walked down the 300-step descent to the Melendiz. The canyon is 14 km, but the sweet section is Ihlara village→Belisırma (4 km, 2 hrs) with 105 rock-cut Byzantine churches in the walls—Ağaçaltı, Sümbüllü, Pürenliseki—frescoes still red and blue if the door’s unlocked. I ate trout at a Belisırma riverside platform (350 TL set lunch, ayran included), then continued to Selime Monastery (free, 1 hr further) or turned back with a taxi pre-arranged. The river was thigh-deep in one April crossing, ankle-deep in August—check season. No card at the stair booth, TL cash only; Belisırma restaurants take cards but tip in cash. Mistake: I started at noon in July and baked on the open meadow stretches—start 8 a.m., carry 2 L, the canyon shade is uneven. Another: I wore trail runners and the stair descent chewed my knees; poles help. Would you walk Ihlara→Selime full 14 km, or do the 4 km in and taxi back for the light?

If you want to experience Cappadocia's breathtaking canyons, mysterious underground cities, and the historic vibe of hiking to monasteries all in one go, the Green Tour is absolutely worth it! This southern-focused route covers the Göreme Panorama, classic underground cities, and a hike through the magnificent Ihlara Valley. In a single day, you can enjoy adventure, get close to nature, savor an authentic local lunch, and finally catch the sunset at Pigeon Valley. It perfectly satisfies your desire to snap photos and just space out. 🗺️ Itinerary Highlights & Recommendations 1. Göreme Panorama You’ll be captivated by the natural beauty at the very first stop. There are basically no bad angles here. You can look out over the fairy chimneys and the entire landscape of Cappadocia. If you want to take those "I was here" tourist shots or blockbuster-style photos, make sure to leave plenty of time! 2. Underground City Exploration You will enter one of Cappadocia's two major underground cities—Derinkuyu or Kaymakli. Navigating this labyrinth over eight levels deep underground lets you experience the "subterranean palace" lifestyle of ancient people. Friendly reminder: the tunnels are quite narrow, so be careful if you have claustrophobia. 3. Ihlara Valley Hike The entire hike is about 3-4 kilometers, walking through a canyon landscape dotted with red, green, and yellow hues. You'll pass ruins of old churches and caves covered in frescoes. It’s perfect for those who love breathing in the fresh air of nature and taking beautiful photos. The riverside pavilions along the way are the best places to rest your feet. 4. Selime Monastery 📍 Address: Kayaaltı, 68500 Selime/Güzelyurt/Aksaray, Turkey ⏰ Open year-round, 08:00 - 18:00 This place truly gives you the vibe of being in a Star Wars movie set (it was actually a filming location!). The monastery is carved directly into the rock face. Climbing to the top gives you a panoramic view of the entire valley. Photography enthusiasts and history buffs will definitely love it! 5. Riverbed Lunch Experience After hiking the valley, you'll grab lunch at a nearby riverside restaurant. With a cool breeze blowing, taking a bite of grilled lamb, salad, or hot soup gives a super exotic and relaxing feel. 6. Pigeon Valley Sunset The last stop is waiting for the sunset at Pigeon Valley. It's healing and super easy to take aesthetic, influencer-style photos! The whole journey wraps up surrounded by pigeons, ancient ruins, and the glowing sunset, allowing you to find a moment of peace after a day of running around. 🌞 Practical Tips · The Green Tour takes a full day, usually departing at 9 AM and returning to the city center around 6 PM. It is recommended to wear hiking shoes or comfortable sneakers since exploring the underground city and hiking involve a lot of walking. · The temperature inside the underground city is lower than above ground, so remember to bring a light jacket if you get cold easily. · Remember to bring some cash, as some restaurants or small shops don't accept credit cards. · The stairs and mountain paths at Selime Monastery are quite steep, so be mindful of safety and don't push yourself too hard. 🍽️ Food Recommendations · The riverside lunch is included in the tour itinerary, mostly featuring kebabs, soup, fries, and salad. Top-notch views with top-notch flavors. 🚗 Transportation / How to Book · The Green Tour is mostly done as a Day Tour. It's most convenient to book through local travel agencies or your hotel front desk, and it includes pick-up and drop-off. If you're driving, it's recommended to download Google Maps offline in advance in case of poor signal in the mountainous areas. If you love historical exploration and natural beauty, but are too lazy to drive yourself, the Cappadocia Green Tour day trip is a "guaranteed no regrets" experience! Just remember to fully charge your camera, because you won't be able to stop snapping photos of the beautiful scenery along the way~

I think the true charm of Cappadocia lies in its perfect blend of "nature," "history," and an "otherworldly vibe." What makes it especially famous are the bizarre rock formations carved out by volcanic activity and centuries of erosion. The unique rocky peaks known as "fairy chimneys" stretch as far as the eye can see, creating a landscape that's hard to find anywhere else in the world. Some of the must-see highlights include: · Göreme National Park The heart of the region, packed with peculiar rocks, cave churches, and breathtaking viewpoints. · Pasabag Valley An area famous for its iconic "mushroom rocks." · Uchisar Castle A massive rock fortress offering panoramic views over all of Cappadocia. · Derinkuyu Underground City An ancient subterranean city extending multiple levels below the surface. What's truly amazing isn't just the geography, but the history of how people carved out a living right into the rocks. Early Christians built these underground cities and cave churches to escape persecution, earning the area its well-deserved status as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

#springtravel Selime Monastery is a hidden gem that looks like it was carved by giants. This massive rock-cut structure is a mind-blowing labyrinth of kitchens, stables, and cathedrals hidden inside a single mountain. Exploring the towering columns and secret passages feels incredibly mystical, like stepping into a "Star Wars" film set. The soulful history etched into the stone walls is a quiet reminder of the civilizations that sought refuge here centuries ago. It’s a place where you can truly disconnect and marvel at human ingenuity. Useful Info: Location: End of the Ihlara Valley (Aksaray region). Price: Approx. 300 TRY (often included in the "Green Tour"). Best Time: Mid-afternoon for the best light inside the caves. Expert Tips: Wear shoes with good grip; the climb into the upper chambers can be quite steep and slippery. Look for the faint remnants of colorful frescoes in the main cathedral area. Why go: It is the largest and most impressive religious rock-cut structure in all of Cappadocia. #SelimeMonastery #AncientHistory #CaveChurch #Mystical #TripFeatured #ExploreTurkey #HiddenGem

Cappadocia is an incredibly magical place, with a landscape that is both desolate and magnificent. It is said to be the place on Earth that most resembles the moon. It's not that you can't go to the moon, but Cappadocia offers better value for money! 🤣 🌕 Cappadocia 2-Day Travel Itinerary There are two traditional routes: the Red Route is closer and easier, while the Green Route is farther and better for outdoor activities. If you only have one day, choose the Red Route. There are many local day tours available in the town of Göreme. I flew from Antalya to Kayseri and then drove myself. ❤️ Red Route: Göreme Open Air Museum — Love Valley — Uçhisar Castle — Avanos (Ceramic Town) — Devrent Valley — Paşabağ ▪️ Göreme Open Air Museum: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, a must-visit! Ancient rock-cut churches and monasteries. ▪️ Love Valley: A forest of stone pillars. ▪️ Uçhisar Castle: Carved from a massive volcanic rock with various functional cave rooms; from the top, you can overlook Cappadocia. ▪️ Avanos (Ceramic Town): Great for photos, with many ceramic products for sale. ▪️ Devrent Valley: A UNESCO World Heritage Site and filming location for Star Wars. ▪️ Paşabağ: See the "fairy chimneys" that don’t emit smoke. 💚 Green Route: Derinkuyu Underground City — Ihlara Valley — Selime Monastery — Pigeon Valley ▪️ Derinkuyu Underground City: Underground levels carved into volcanic rock. ▪️ Ihlara Valley: Mountains and streams, perfect for hiking. ▪️ Selime Monastery: A huge rock-cut monastery. ▪️ Pigeon Valley: As the name suggests, home to many pigeons. 🏠 Accommodation Usually stay in the town of Göreme, which has many cave hotels. I stayed at Arif Cave Hotel, located on high ground with a public terrace perfect for photographing hot air balloons. Selime Cathedral is a massive rock monastery located at the southern edge of Cappadocia. It is the largest rock church complex in the region, used by monks during the Byzantine era from the 8th to 13th centuries. From afar, it looks like a giant rocky mountain, but once inside, you'll find a complex structure connecting rooms, chapels, kitchens, and monastic spaces—truly astonishing. 👀 Must-See Highlights ✔️ Main Hall of the Cathedral The high and grand ceiling sets it apart from typical cave churches. ✔️ Second-Floor Viewpoint The view of the Ihlara Valley through the window-like openings is breathtaking. ✔️ Rock Stairs & Tunnel Passages Climbing up and down lets you imagine the daily lives of the monks. ✔️ Fresco Traces Though much has faded over time, some remnants of wall paintings remain. 🚐 How to Get There It is usually included in the Green Tour itinerary. From Göreme, it takes over an hour by car. Public transportation is scarce, so tours or rental cars are practical options. 🎒 Visiting Tips ✔️ Steep and slippery stairs → Wear sneakers ✔️ Sections without railings → Be cautious if you have a fear of heights ✔️ Morning visits recommended (less backlight and cooler temperatures) ✔️ Strong sunlight → Bring a hat and sunglasses ✔️ Interior is shaded and slightly chilly Among Cappadocia's cave churches, this one stands out for its sheer scale and grandeur. It's not just about beautiful scenery; it's a space that preserves the lives and faith of the monks, making it even more impactful. Add to that the expansive view of the Anatolian plains from the cliff, and it truly feels like being on another planet 🌍

What to do in Cappadocia during the winter season? In winter, life here slows down and becomes more tranquil and measured. Cafes are uncrowded, and hotel prices are pleasantly low. Winter vacations have their own unique charm. The mountain houses are covered in snow, making them even cozier. Hot air balloons rarely fly during this period, but there's no need to be disappointed—there's plenty to amaze you here. If you want a cave hotel, choose Goreme. If you prefer something more modern, stay in Uchisar. There's no significant difference between these towns, and you can walk from one to the other through Pigeon Valley, which is about 4-5 km. This walk won't be tiring; it will be filled with impressions. 🔥 Take a tour of the underground city. You can choose any of them—they're all fascinating and unique. 🔥 Ride an ATV; the routes are not difficult and require minimal driving skills, but you'll gain a wealth of impressions. 🔥 Walk through at least one valley from end to end. It will be the best walk of your life. You won't see such beauty from tour buses. (I recommend Pigeon Valley and Love Valley.) 🔥 Take a million Instagram photos at one of the many photo spots. No queues or crowds of tourists. 🔥 Try authentic kebab cooked in a clay pot over fire and, of course, Turkish coffee. Bring comfortable shoes and warm clothing, as temperatures can drop to -5°C at night. Leave for the airport a bit earlier, as icy roads may hinder bus travel. These narrow streets have steep inclines.
