We always thought cherry blossoms wouldn’t show up until the end of March, until we accidentally wandered to the banks of the Kawazu River on the Izu Peninsula and discovered that spring can arrive this early and so suddenly—the Kawazu cherry blossoms in early February have gathered all their strength, dyeing the entire river valley in rosy clouds, with even the breeze carrying a sweet fragrance, announcing the grand opening of "Japan’s earliest cherry blossom season." Unlike the slender Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms, Kawazu cherry blossoms have rounder, fuller petals and a gentle light pink color. In the still chilly early spring, they look like clusters of sun-warmed cotton candy or the cheeks of a girl without makeup, softening the very air with their pink hue. this historic site which has been a hidden gem. i stumbled upon this neighborhood during my trip to shimada city and was fascinated to read the history of the remain buildings of this beautiful post town which was located on the edo side of the oi river. what happened was the tokugawa era forbid the construction of any bridges or ferry services over the oi river. the procedure to cross the river was to have travelers to purchase a crossing permit and to be carried across the river either on the back of the poters or by palanquin. so this beautiful wooden banyado was built for people to gathered to rest, to make crossing and tickets were sold. #historicalsites #historicallandmarks

I went to Horaibashi Bridge over the Oi River in Shizuoka, known as the longest wooden footbridge in the world! It is a wooden footbridge with a total length of 897.4 meters and a width of 2.4 meters. It is still used as a farm road, but unfortunately, due to construction work, I was only able to go partway across! When the weather is good, you can see the World Heritage site Mt. Fuji!! I went to KADODE OOIGAWA in Shizuoka Prefecture! Inside, there was a wide selection of souvenirs and local specialties from Shizuoka Prefecture!! There was also a tea corner in the back, where you could enjoy Shizuoka tea! KADODE OOIGAWA is full of the charms of Shizuoka Prefecture! The Oigawa Railway also runs nearby, so if you're lucky, you might even be able to see Thomas running on the tracks. It's a highly recommended free spot that you can enjoy just by looking at it! Horaibashi Bridge is a wooden pedestrian bridge spanning the Oi River, with a total length of 897.4m. Long trees = long-lived bridges, and the bridge's total length of 897.4 (yaku-nashi = no misfortune) is a play on words, making it a popular bridge for good luck. The bridge has supported people's lives for over 100 years, despite being hit by various natural disasters, and not only does it give a sense of history, but it also gives a sense of something invisible that is filled with people's thoughts, and is full of such charms. 🏯 Suwahara Castle Ruins Suwahara Castle Ruins are the remains of a Sengoku period mountain castle located on the Makinohara Plateau in Shimada City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Selected as one of the "Continued Top 100 Japanese Castles," it's a must-see spot for history buffs! ✨ Suwahara Castle is said to have originated when Takeda Shingen built a fort on this site. In 1573, Takeda Katsuyori ordered his retainer, Baba Nobuharu, to construct a full-fledged castle. It was an important base for advancing into Tōtōmi Province and also served as a castle to keep Tokugawa Ieyasu in check. Later, in 1575, Tokugawa Ieyasu attacked and captured the castle, changing its name to "Makino Castle" and renovating it as a Tokugawa castle. Therefore, the interesting thing about these castle ruins is that features of both the Takeda and Tokugawa clans' castle construction remain. ⚔️ 🌿 The Main Highlights: The "Marumadashi" and the Huge Moat While walking around the Suwahara Castle Ruins, you should definitely pay attention to the crescent-shaped moat and the Maruumadashi. The Maru-umadashi (circular outwork) is one of the representative features of the Takeda-style castle construction, a defensive structure designed to protect the castle from enemies while simultaneously allowing troops to sortie outside. Although the buildings themselves no longer exist, the remains of earthworks, moats, and baileys are beautifully preserved, making it easy to imagine, "This is where the Sengoku-era warlords defended!" 🏯✨ The large, curving moat is particularly impressive and makes for a highly photogenic Sengoku-era historical site. 🌄 The view from the castle ruins is also a must-see! Another charm of the Suwahara Castle ruins is the view from the plateau. It's interesting because you can enjoy the scenery while also experiencing the topographical strategies of the Sengoku period. 📖 Visit the Visitor Center The Suwahara Castle Visitor Center is located in the first parking lot of the castle ruins. It displays the castle's history and structure, as well as pottery and musket balls unearthed during excavations. There's also a diorama of the castle, which will help you understand the significance of the remains before walking around the site. ✨ Admission is free, and opening hours are 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. A stamp for the "Continued Top 100 Japanese Castles" is also available. 🚗 Access Approximately 25 minutes on foot from JR Kanaya Station. Community buses are also available. Kakegawa is often overlooked. When visiting Shizuoka, most people flock to Hamamatsu or Shizuoka City, followed by Shimizu and Numazu for the iconic Mt. Fuji views and fresh seafood. It wasn't until my fourth trip that I finally decided to stay in Kakegawa. If you're traveling from Hamamatsu toward the Oigawa Railway along the Tokaido Line, Kakegawa is an excellent choice for an overnight stay. First off, it's a huge energy saver. Hamamatsu is a major hub, and while there are plenty of hotels near the station, most are at least a 10 to 15-minute walk away. In contrast, Kakegawa Station is compact; you can reach the nearest hotel in just 30 seconds from the ticket gate. Just across the street is the Kakegawa Grand Hotel, which has a distinct Southeast Asian vibe and costs only about 6,000 yen on weekdays—all within a one-minute walk. Secondly, it’s incredibly affordable. Hotel rates are low, and the cost of living is budget-friendly. There’s an eatery inside the station serving high-quality food (see photos) for around 1,000 yen. They even offer smaller portions for just 600 to 800 yen. Even at the Kakegawa Kachoen (Bird and Flower Park) food court and souvenir shops, prices generally stay under 1,000 yen. Kakegawa’s top attraction is Kachoen (Bird and Flower Park). It’s a 20-minute walk from the South Exit or a 17-minute bus ride from the North Exit. It’s such a vibrant, cheerful place where you can get up close and personal with the birds—they’ll even perch on your shoulder for a photo! A personal hidden gem is the Stained Glass Museum, located about 15 minutes on foot from the North Exit. The walk takes you past the outskirts of Kakegawa Castle. What makes this museum stand out is that it doesn’t just show the final pieces; it meticulously explains the design and craftsmanship behind stained glass art. It's truly educational. Right across the street is a cluster of traditional buildings, likely old study halls, which are also worth a quick visit.

The journey takes about 23 minutes, then get off at the Kokami-Izumi stop. This spot also offers a panoramic view of the hidden gem station! 🔹This station is built on a dam lake, making it look like it's floating on the water from a distance—absolutely magical! The Oigawa Railway's Southern Alps Cogwheel Train Line (Igawa Line), which operates the "Oku-Oi-ko-ue" station, is currently the only cogwheel train still in operation in Japan. - 📍Dream Suspension Bridge Address: Senzu, Kawanemoto-cho, Hagiwara-gun, Shizuoka Prefecture (Sumimata Gorge) 🛺Access: 🔹Take the Oigawa Railway to Senzu and transfer to a bus to Sumimata Gorge Onsen. After getting off the bus, walk through the Sumimata Gorge Onsen town and you will see the entrance to the Dream Suspension Bridge trail. Pass through an abandoned tunnel, and after exiting the tunnel, you will see a path leading down the mountain. If you’re a Thomas Locomotive fan like me, or have kids who love trains, you can’t miss it! Located between Shinkanaya Station and Kayama Station, there are rich mountain scenery along the way, and you will also encounter the classic Thomas red locomotive, perfect for photography and family fun. Recommended fun routes: The tour can be arranged for a full-day one-way route. You can first head to Shinkanaya Station (Address: 2-1112-2 Kanayaazuma, Shimada, Shizuoka Prefecture), one of the main stations on the Oikawa Railway and the surroundings are full of retro town vibe. It is advisable to check the train schedule in advance, as Thomas trains have limited daily services. After departing from Shinkanaya Station, take the Oikawa Railway through the lush green valley, outside the car window you will see layers of woods, rivers, and natural scenery.
