Shingu travel guide and discussion

Located in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, Kumano Hongu Taisha is one of the Kumano Sanzan and serves as the head shrine for approximately 3,000 Kumano shrines across Japan. If you're visiting the Kumano Sanzan and aren't driving, be prepared for at least a two-day, one-night trip. Take my experience as an example: I started my journey at Hineno Station and caught the first Limited Express Kuroshio train, arriving in Shingu City right at noon. Since I was carrying luggage, I had to head straight to the Shingu City Tourism Association outside the station to store it. Conveniently, the bus stop for Hongu Taisha is right there, allowing me to hop on the bus immediately after dropping off my bags. The bus ride from Shingu City to Hongu Taisha takes about an hour, and the scenery along the way is quite beautiful. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the tranquility of nature, you'll absolutely love it here. Since I visited on a weekday, there were very few tourists, making it truly peaceful and relaxing. Generally, there are two ways to get to Shingu City: First, the Limited Express Kuroshio, coming from the Osaka or Wakayama direction. Second, the Limited Express Nanki, coming from the Nagoya or Ise direction. I highly recommend purchasing a JR Pass, as it can save you a ton on transportation costs—it practically pays for itself! You can find it on the official JR-West website.

Step onto the ancient Kumano Kodo and follow the footsteps of pilgrims who have journeyed through these sacred mountains for over a thousand years. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Kumano Kodo winds through towering cedar forests, moss-covered stone paths, and peaceful mountain landscapes, leading to the revered Kumano Sanzan—Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha. Surrounded by centuries-old trees that reach toward the sky, these sacred shrines are believed to be places where gods dwell. The tranquil atmosphere, drifting mist, and timeless beauty create an almost ethereal experience, making every step along the pilgrimage feel deeply connected to nature and spirituality. 📍 Location: Kumano Kodo & Kumano Sanzan, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan 🇯🇵 ⛩️ Highlight: A UNESCO World Heritage pilgrimage route connecting Japan's three sacred Kumano Grand Shrines ✨ Feature: Ancient stone trails, towering cedar forests, historic shrines, spiritual landscapes, and centuries of pilgrimage tradition 🍃 Atmosphere: Sacred, serene, mystical, and rejuvenating 📸 Best for: Nature photography, cultural exploration, hiking, shrine visits, and spiritual journeys 💡 Travel Tip: Wear comfortable hiking shoes and allow plenty of time to enjoy the forest trails. If you only think of Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara when Kansai is mentioned... you're really missing out! 🍃 Wakayama, an off-the-beaten-path destination, is often overlooked, but it boasts rugged natural beauty, world-class pilgrimage hiking trails, and top-tier Pacific hot spring experiences... It's crowd-free yet full of hidden surprises. Ever since I went, I haven't stopped thinking about it... I'm always longing to go back! If you want to experience a different side of Japan, I truly believe Wakayama and its surrounding hidden gems will captivate you. ✨ Here is a one-way itinerary I highly recommend: Arrive in Osaka - Wakayama - Shirahama - Kumano Kodo - Koyasan - Return. It usually takes about 6-7 days to complete. 🟢 Itinerary Guide 1️⃣ Wakayama - Tama Train Experience & Wakayama Castle 📍 Wakayama Castle A national treasure-class building and the perfect "observation deck" overlooking Wakayama City. Admission to the castle tower is 410 JPY for adults and 200 JPY for elementary/junior high school students. 📍 Tama Train Say hi to the feline stationmaster! The entire railway line is cat-themed, and the stationmaster at the final stop, Kishi Station, is an actual cat. 📍 Kuroshio Market Kansai's oldest fresh seafood market, featuring daily scheduled tuna-cutting shows. 2️⃣ Shirahama - Coastal Views & Relaxing Holiday 📍 Shirarahama Beach: Boasting pristine white sand and clear waters, it's perfect for enjoying the gentle sea breeze. 📍 Engetsu Island: Shirahama's iconic landmark and a popular photo spot. Its naturally formed round cave resembles a full moon. 📍 Senjojiki A vast rock plateau carved by crashing ocean waves, looking like thousands of stacked tatami mats. It's truly spectacular and unique. 📍 Sandanbeki A 36-meter-deep underground cave formed by years of wave erosion. You can enjoy a breathtaking sunset from the observation deck. 3️⃣ Kumano Kodo - World Heritage Ancient Pilgrimage Route 📍 Kumano Nachi Taisha: A striking red shrine located next to a stunning waterfall. 📍 Seigantoji Temple: A historic Buddhist temple situated on Mount Nachi. 📍 Nachi Waterfall: The tallest waterfall in Japan. 📍 Jofuku Park: Built to commemorate Xu Fu, a Chinese alchemist from the Qin Dynasty. 📍 Kumano Hayatama Taisha: The earliest site of worship among the Kumano Sanzan (Three Grand Shrines of Kumano). ✨ You can even dress up in Heian-era costumes for a true time-traveling experience! 4️⃣ Koyasan - The Sacred Heartland of Japanese Buddhism 📍 Danjo Garan Along with Okunoin, it serves as the spiritual center of Koyasan. Danjo Garan is the true core of this holy mountain. 📍 Kongobuji Temple A national treasure temple and the headquarters of Koyasan Shingon Buddhism, featuring classic Japanese garden designs. 📍 Okunoin The most sacred site in Koyasan, home to the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi (Kukai). PS. Koyasan is mainly for experiencing temples and Buddhist culture. If that's not your cup of tea, you can allocate your time to other areas. There's no such thing as the "perfect" travel itinerary—the only perfect route is the one you design yourself! ~

A massive gorge located near the borders of Wakayama, Nara, and Mie prefectures We took a tour of Dorokyo to enjoy its stunning scenery. As you can see in the photos, it's about a 40-minute round trip on a traditional Japanese riverboat. Instead of a large sightseeing ship, you travel on a small boat right near the water's surface, which was amazing because you could feel the sheer scale of the rock walls up close. The boarding point is the Tamakiguchi Satellite in Kumanogawa-cho, Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture. We showed up without a reservation, but luckily there was an opening. They told us, "You can hop on at this time," so we only had to wait a little bit before boarding. Once on the riverboat, we slowly made our way through the deep gorge. At one point, the boat sped up so much that I was surprised, thinking, "Whoa! This boat can go that fast?!", Honestly, I didn't expect it to be this thrilling before we went, but massive rock walls towered on both sides, offering views you can only get from the river. Passing through the narrow gaps between the rocks really felt like venturing into an unexplored wilderness. The breathtaking combination of crystal-clear water, the tranquil river, and the giant rocks left a lasting impression on me. Along the way, our veteran boatman—an excellent storyteller—shared all sorts of fascinating facts, which was another highlight of the trip. He pointed out how close we were to the prefectural borders, mentioned that crossing a nearby bridge takes you to a different prefecture, and told us about a building on the cliffs that used to be a bustling tourist hub. Hearing his stories while taking in the views made the experience feel even more like a hidden adventure. It's a place where you can feel the raw power of nature up close in a peaceful atmosphere, far away from typical tourist crowds. I highly recommend it if you're looking for a slightly unique experience during your Wakayama trip. When I checked, the fare for the Dorokyo boat tour was around 3,000 yen for adults. They officially require reservations, so I recommend checking their operating status and availability before you go. Since boat tours depend on river conditions and the weather, verifying in advance will give you peace of mind. Between the incredible scenery, the thrill of the ride, and the boatman's stories, it's a place I won't soon forget. It was an incredibly rewarding and unforgettable sightseeing experience! ✨ spectacular views

Tested the essence of the Kumano Kodo trail! This route is definitely worth rushing for~ Itinerary: Hayatama Taisha → Kamikura Shrine → Daimonzaka → Nachi Taisha → Seiganto-ji Temple → Hiryu Taisha → Nachi Waterfall → Kii-Katsuura → Kumano Hongu Taisha After researching the bus options for a long time, I decisively chose a private car, so I had full control over the time! Hiked 4 km from Daimonzaka to Nachi Waterfall, surrounded by towering trees that are super healing. I recommend at least 1.5 hours to stroll slowly. Had lunch at Kii-Katsuura Seafood Market. The taste was good but a bit pricey; one set meal wasn’t enough 😂 After eating, went to the pier for a foot bath! The lonely torii gate in the sea (Shirohebi Benzaiten Shrine) is a must-visit. You can even go into the sea and see many sea cucumbers (PS: after taking photos, they were returned to their original place, with a release video). Finally rushed to Kumano Hongu Taisha. The large torii gate is quite impressive! On the way from the old site to the new site, there’s a small supermarket where the Wagyu beef is excellent value. Bought some to add to the meal at the guesthouse—another satisfying day~ The overall route is smooth without detours, satisfying both natural scenery and cultural heritage. For the lazy ones, just lock in the private car option!

Starting from Kansai Airport, heading south into the moss-covered, history-rich Kii Mountain Range 🗓️ Day 1-2: A Warm Welcome in Shingu City 🚉 From Kansai Airport, transfer via Wakayama and Kii-Tanabe to Shingu Station Arriving in Shingu City: · Dual Pilgrimage Passport: Don’t forget to pick it up at the tourist association to start your stamp-collecting journey. · Asuka Shrine & Kamikura Shrine: The steep stone steps of Kamikura Shrine are a true test of endurance, but the city view from the top is worth it. · Must-Try Delicacies: Hidden confectionery shop (Amanogawa Dainagon Yokan), local specialty Mehari Sushi, and treats from Koumeidou like Suzuyaki and Senbei. 🥾 Day 3: The Daikodo Section (Oguchi to Nachi) This is considered one of the most challenging sections. · Distance: 18.6km, with an elevation gain from 60m to 925m Trail Highlights: · Enzaishi: A moss-covered gathering place for deities, exuding a mystical aura. · Dogirizaka: A grueling slope aptly named "Backbreaking Hill," with an 800m ascent over 5km. · Jizo Chaya Ruins: A mid-point rest stop with restrooms and a cedar-scented shelter. · Funamigatouge: The highest point of this section, offering views of the Pacific Ocean and Nachi Mountain. · Pilgrimage’s End: Reaching Nachi Taisha and Nachi Falls is a breathtaking experience that makes you forget the pain in your feet. 🥺 ♨️ Day 4: The Shokodo Section (Oguchi to Yunomine) · Distance: 13.7km, with an elevation gain of about 430m · Stunning Viewpoint: Hyakken-gura This spot offers a panoramic view of the endless Kumano mountain range, making it the most recommended place to relax and unwind. Yunomine Onsen Experience: Steeped in rustic charm, it feels like stepping into the world of "Spirited Away." · Tsuboyu: The world’s only "World Heritage" hot spring you can bathe in. Though there’s a queue (it’s best to check in first and then return to wait), pulling back the wooden curtain to soak while enjoying the view makes it all worthwhile. (˶‾᷄ ⁻̫ ‾᷅˵) · Onsen Ritual: Buy a bag of eggs to cook in the hot spring, paired with simple soy sauce and rice for the happiest dinner. ⛩️ Day 5: The Soul’s Destination (Hosshinmon-oji to Hongu Taisha) · About 8.4km, the path weaves through rural trails and forests with stunning scenery. · Hongu Taisha & Oyunohara: Japan’s largest torii gate stands amidst the fields, marking the spiritual beginning and end (photography is strictly prohibited inside). · Delightful Treats: Be sure to try "Nachi Black" brown sugar and "Hassaku" citrus, both rich and flavorful! 💡 Kumano Kodo Tips: 1. Bus Rides: · Take a numbered ticket when boarding. · Check the display above the driver for the corresponding fare when alighting. · Prepare small change: Some machines don’t accept 5,000/10,000 yen bills. · Recommended Apps: Download Japanese bus or navigation apps to track precise departure times. 2. Weather and Attire: · Even on sunny days, the mountain and riverside winds can be strong; dress in layers. · The 200m elevation can feel like high-altitude Taiwan, so don’t underestimate the need for warmth and wind protection. In Kumano, the most beautiful scenery is the "people." It’s the trail runner who helped an aunt carry her belongings at Kamikura Shrine, the izakaya staff who gifted you oranges, and the elderly man who gave you a "strength" charm and cooked your onsen egg. This sense of "blessing" is the most profound travel souvenir, surpassing any landscape. ♡

When it comes to in-depth travel in Kansai, aside from Kyoto and Osaka, don't miss the southern part of Wakayama Prefecture! This time, I embarked on a non-driving pilgrimage journey to Kumano Sanzan using public transportation—visiting the serene and spiritual towns of Nachikatsuura, Tanabe, and Shingu. Following the Kumano Kodo trail, I explored Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha, complemented by the majestic Nachi Falls, Hiryu Shrine, Daimonzaka trail, and the healing beauty of Benten Island and the iconic three-story pagoda. This entire trip is filled with ancient Japanese mythology and natural energy. This non-driving route is highly recommended for those who enjoy in-depth travel and have a bit of stamina! Recommended Attractions: 1. Hiryu Shrine 📍Address: Nachisan, Nachikatsuura Town, Higashimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture ⏰Opening Hours: 07:30-16:30 (Year-round) A visual and spiritual feast. Behind the shrine lies the legendary "Nachi Falls," one of Japan's three most famous waterfalls. The powerful cascade lets you feel the force of nature, brimming with energy! The shrine's atmosphere is surprisingly tranquil, so it's best to visit in the morning to enjoy the sunlight filtering through the trees and avoid the crowds. 2. Daimonzaka 📍Address: Nachisan, Nachikatsuura Town, Higashimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture A must-visit! This ancient trail is shaded by lush greenery, with stone-paved paths winding uphill, surrounded by towering trees and traditional Japanese houses. It takes about 20-30 minutes to walk from Hiryu Shrine to Kumano Nachi Taisha, offering a therapeutic experience along the Kumano Kodo trail. If the weather is good, the interplay of light and shadow adds a unique charm. 3. Benten Island 📍Address: Katsuura, Nachikatsuura Town, Higashimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture A small island near the harbor with stunning outdoor sea views and plenty of seabirds! Perfect for a leisurely stroll, photography, and enjoying the sea breeze and sunset. It's within walking distance from Nachikatsuura Station, making it a refreshing surprise during the pilgrimage. 4. Kumano Hongu Taisha 📍Address: 1110 Hongucho Hongu, Tanabe, Wakayama 647-1731 ⏰Opening Hours: 07:00-17:00 (Year-round) One of the three Kumano shrines, this shrine covers a vast area, immersing visitors in Japan's ancient spiritual culture. The architecture is majestic, and the atmosphere for worship is profound, making it ideal for spiritual rejuvenation. You can also explore nearby shops for unique souvenirs and charms. 5. Kumano Nachi Taisha & Seiganto-ji Temple's Three-Story Pagoda Located near Hiryu Shrine, Kumano Nachi Taisha features elegant traditional architecture and a serene atmosphere for worship. Adjacent to it is the three-story pagoda of Seiganto-ji Temple. The view from the pagoda, with Nachi Falls in the background, is a must-capture dreamlike scene in Wakayama! 📌Important Tips for Non-Driving Travelers: Since transportation in the Kumano Sanzan area is not very frequent, it's advisable to check bus schedules in advance. The main connections between attractions are via JR trains or Kumano Kotsu buses, so traveling light is most convenient! Google Maps may occasionally provide incorrect information, so downloading maps in advance is recommended. Simple meals, convenience stores, and traditional snacks are available near the shrines, but it's safer to bring some water and snacks. 🍱 Food Recommendations: Near the Nachikatsuura Town port area, there are seafood rice bowl restaurants offering fresh catches directly from the local fishing port—highly recommended! Many small shops along the way feature local specialties like plum and yuzu products, which make great souvenirs. 🌟 Practical Tips: 1. Wear comfortable sports shoes and bring rain gear when walking the Kumano Kodo trail, as the mountain area often has mist or light rain. 2. Plan for at least two days to avoid rushing and fatigue. 3. Collect goshuin (shrine stamps) at each shrine—don't forget to bring your goshuin book. 4. Some attractions (like Daimonzaka and the three-story pagoda) require uphill walking, so elderly visitors should consider the walking distance. Whether you're looking to simply pray, take photos, or immerse yourself in the mythical southern Japanese atmosphere, Kumano Sanzan offers a unique spiritual experience. Traveling without a car allows you to savor every corner of the scenery more intimately.

Visited in April 2023 *Kumano Hayatama Taisha Located at the mouth of the Kumano River, the shrine grounds are home to a large "Nagi tree" that is a sacred natural monument. ✨ The current shrine building was burned down in September 1883 and rebuilt afterwards, but the World Heritage Site includes the shrine grounds, the "Kamikurayama" behind it, the "Mifunejima" floating in the Kumano River, and the "Otabisho"😊 It is said that the shrine building was built and enshrined at the current location to welcome Kumano Gongen, who descended to Gotobiki Rock at the southern end of Kamikurayama😊 Since then, it is said that this place has been called Shingu in contrast to the original shrine on Kamikurayama☺️ #Pilgrimage #Kumano Sanzan #Kumano Pilgrimage #Kumano Hayatama Taisha

Staying in Shingu for a day post Kumano Kodo trek. Walked to the Kamikura Shrine precinct and enjoyed the serene greenness of the area. The first run of stairs leading up the hillside to this shrine is the steepest and most daunting, but the views over the city are totally worth the 500+ stair climb to this pretty little shrine. Just take it slow and easy and you'll reach your reward. There's a windy dirt trail that bypasses these steep stairs and leads from a flat rest point at the midpoint of the climb down to the bottom. It looks to some folks like it might be easier to take than the stairs, but I think the many tree roots on this path actually make it more dangerous, particularly if there's been rain and the soil is slick. Our legs went straight to muscle memory and enjoyed climbing up the steep steps. Spectacular views across Shingu to the sea. A very enjoyable experience. #givethanks #givethanks

Arriving in Nachikatsuura in early October, the morning and evening breeze already carries a chill, but once the sun comes out, you'll find yourself looking for a patch of shade. 🍃 Stepping out of JR Kii-Katsuura Station, the air is filled with the scent of the sea. The area in front of the station is small; a few steps away is the fishing port, quiet as a typical small town. There are no high-rises on the streets—just mountains when you look up, and the sea when you look down. This place is on the southeastern corner of the Kii Peninsula in Wakayama Prefecture. In its name, "Nachi" refers to the mountain, and "Katsuura" to the sea. 🚋 It takes about four hours to get here from Shin-Osaka on the Limited Express Kuroshio, and about the same from Nagoya on the Nanki. If you want to save on travel costs, check if a Kansai travel pass is worth it. Schedules change by season, so asking at the station window is more reliable than flipping through old guidebooks. JR Kii-Katsuura Station is an old wooden building. To the left of the exit is a tourist information center where you can find maps, bus schedules, and stamps. A quick question inside will help you sort out your route. The town's hot spring street stretches along the harbor. Taking a walk in the evening, with the sea breeze mixed with the steam from the hot springs, you'll soon feel like you're on vacation. Mt. Nachi and the ancient trails in this area were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004 as "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range." There are several Kumano Kodo routes; the Nakahechi route is one of the more popular ones, connecting the three grand shrines of Hongu, Hayatama, and Nachi. The section toward Hongu, starting from Hosshinmon-oji, takes you through villages and forests, downhill all the way to Hongu Taisha. It's about seven kilometers on foot, so plan for half a day including time for worship and rest. If you're short on time, just walking a short section is enough to get a taste of it. Take the bus from Katsuura Station toward Mt. Nachi; it takes about 20 minutes to reach Daimon-zaka and about 30 minutes to reach Nachi Falls. ⛰️ If you want to experience a bit of the pilgrimage atmosphere, get off at Daimon-zaka. That section of cobblestone stairs is over 600 meters long with about 200 steps, flanked by centuries-old cedar and camphor trees. Halfway up, you'll find the 800-year-old "Couple Cedars" (Meoto Sugi) standing side by side. It's damp and shady under the trees year-round, and the ground can be slippery, so wearing shoes with good grip will save you some trouble. At the top of the stairs is Kumano Nachi Taisha, right next to Seiganto-ji Temple. 🏮 Inside the shrine grounds, there's an ancient camphor tree that's hundreds of years old, with a trunk so thick two people couldn't wrap their arms around it. The temple's three-storied pagoda, with the waterfall in the background, is a frequently photographed scene in this area: the red pagoda, the white cascade, and the green mountains, all squeezed into the same frame. Nachi Falls has a drop of 133 meters, a single-tier drop that ranks among the best in Japan. Hiro-jinja Shrine, located below the waterfall, is very close to the water. The sound of the falls is loud enough to drown out conversation, and standing there for a while will naturally calm you down. This climb and visit will take about two to three hours at a leisurely pace. It's pilgrimage on the mountain and hot springs below. The Katsuura area is known as Nanki-Katsuura Onsen, and many hotels offer hot springs with ocean views. After a soak, the soreness from climbing the mountain fades away quickly. 😌 After your evening soak, the small eateries in town start lighting up. Just walk into any one of them and order a tuna rice bowl; the fish is so fresh it has no fishy taste—Katsuura Fishing Port consistently ranks at the top in Japan for tuna landings. If you can get up early, you can go to Katsuura Fishing Port to see the tuna auction. It starts before dawn, and it's usually closed on Tuesdays, so don't make your itinerary too rigid. 🛳️ Across from the port is Kii-no-Matsushima, where over a hundred small islands are scattered across the sea. A sightseeing boat tour takes about 40 minutes. Looking at those islands from the boat, it's like someone misplaced a bonsai garden. In the summer, Ukui Fishing Port offers whale and dolphin watching tours, but whether you can catch good weather for a boat trip in October depends on the year's schedule. Don't miss the Nachi black stone in town. ⚫ This black stone is a local specialty. You can find small ornaments and handy items made from it along the roadside. They feel smooth and warm to the touch, making them a substantial yet compact souvenir. After two days of exploring, I left my hot spring hotel and walked slowly along the seaside toward the station. In the distance, the lights of the fishing boats flickered on one by one, and the sea breeze gradually blew away the heat of the day.

Shingu is a small city in the eastern part of the Kii Peninsula and a key stop on the Kumano Kodo. Unlike many small cities, it had shrines before it had a city. Kumano Hayatama Taisha is also called Shingu, and the city's name originates from this. In Shingu, traces of Xu Fu from the Qin dynasty are scattered throughout the small city. Mount Horai, the Xu Fu Landing Site, Xu Fu Shrine, and Xu Fu Park—these relics connect a legend of crossing the sea that has lasted for a millennium. This ancient narrative has been able to take deep root here, thanks not only to Shingu's unique mountain-and-sea landscape but also because it naturally blends with Kumano beliefs and the philosophy of the "other shore." The Kumano River flows into the sea, forming a wide and gentle estuary harbor. The water is calm and expansive, making it an excellent anchorage for ancient fleets. Mount Horai, standing alone at the river mouth, has a round and serene shape, floating above the misty waves. It perfectly matches the ancient people's ethereal imagination of mythical mountains at sea, becoming the geographical origin point for the legend of Xu Fu's quest for immortality. As the hinterland of the Kumano sacred realm, this land of Shingu has been imbued with thoughts about this shore and the other shore since ancient times. Kumano is about climbing mountains to reach the other shore, while Xu Fu is about crossing the sea to seek eternal life. These two paths, one by land and one by sea, carry the same ultimate human yearning: to transcend the fleeting present world and reach the peaceful, eternal other shore. It is precisely because of this high degree of alignment in their spiritual core that the foreign legend of Xu Fu was able to perfectly integrate into Shingu's sacred system. The distant guest who crossed the sea a millennium ago is no longer a stranger. Here, Xu Fu is revered as a god of navigation, exploration, and medicinal herbs, worshipped for generations. Asuka Shrine established a shrine for him, Edo-period feudal lords erected monuments, and later generations built a park to commemorate him, allowing the ethereal ancient legend to settle into a tangible and profound cultural heritage for Shingu. The mountains and sea have not changed in a millennium, and the sea breeze remains the same. With the fairy mountain at the river mouth as its form and the belief in the other shore as its soul, Shingu has allowed the story of Xu Fu's voyage in search of truth to take root and be passed down through generations. When visiting Shingu, don't just treat it as a "check-in" spot for Xu Fu. Try viewing it within the context of the Kumano belief in the other shore, and you will understand the unique character of this small city. 🏞️ Major Xu Fu-related attractions in Shingu · Mount Horai. An independent round hill at the mouth of the Kumano River. Local legend regards it as the "Penglai" (mythical mountain) from ancient texts, and it is the origin of Shingu's Xu Fu culture. (Photo 2, the mountain behind Asuka Shrine) · Monument to the Landing Site of Xu Fu from the Qin Dynasty. Located at the foot of Mount Horai by the Kumano River, it marks the spot where legend says Xu Fu's fleet landed. It is a historic site with a strong sense of ritual. (Photo 1) · Xu Fu Shrine. A small stone shrine within Asuka Shrine dedicated to Xu Fu. Incorporating Xu Fu into the Kumano sacred realm is a key testament to another layer of religious fusion, beyond the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism. (Photo 4) · Monument of Zen Master Zuyuan. Located in front of Xu Fu Shrine, this monument features a poem left by the Southern Song Dynasty Zen Master Zuyuan when he traveled to Japan and visited the Xu Fu Shrine: "The master went to gather herbs and never returned, how many times has the homeland's landscape turned to dust. Today I offer a stick of incense from afar, for this old monk also came to avoid the Qin." (Photo 5) · Xu Fu Park. The park preserves an Edo-period tombstone of Xu Fu, stone statues, the "Fulao" (Eternal Youth) Pond, and Tiantai Wuyao plants. It is the most comprehensive memorial park for Xu Fu culture in Shingu. (Photos 6-8) 💡 Travel Tips ▪️ Suitable for: History and culture enthusiasts, and travelers who want to deeply understand the Kumano belief system regarding the other shore ▪️ Location significance: Shingu is an important node in the Kumano pilgrimage and can be planned in conjunction with the Kumano Sanzan and Kumano Kodo ▪️ Visiting tips: Xu Fu Park is right next to Shingu Station and is easily accessible. Xu Fu Shrine is inside Asuka Shrine, and the other sites are all near the shrine ▪️ Reading note: Stories related to Xu Fu are local folk legends passed down for a millennium and should not be viewed as official history

Walking the central side path of the Kumano Kodo, what touches the heart most is not the rolling mountains and stone steps, nor the scenery along the way, but the forest quietly hidden deep within the ancient path—the Forest of Rebirth. Here lies the core of the faith that has sustained the ancient path for millennia: Kumano has always been a sacred place of rebirth and revival. 🍃 What is the "Forest of Rebirth"? Passing through the Oji Gate, walking through a small village, and entering the forest trail, we saw several ancient and powerful signs on silent stone tablets along the way: 苏生の森 (Sūshō no Mori). In Japanese, "苏" means awakening, revival, and rebirth. This is not just an ordinary forest; it is the boundary between the secular world and the divine realm, as defined by the ancients. For thousands of years, pilgrims have traveled from afar to reach this place, signifying a complete farewell to the past: shedding weariness, letting go of worries, and relinquishing attachments. The moment you step into the forest, the old self fades away, and a brand new life begins. 🍃 "Forest of Rebirth" Hiking Experience Here, the vegetation is dense and deep, with ancient trees reaching for the sky. Tall, straight fir trees stand majestically in the mountains, blocking out the sun. Beneath the trees, delicate ferns grow in dense thickets, their tender green leaves and slender, supple stems coexisting with the ancient, steadfast fir trees. Sunlight filters through the canopy, casting dappled shadows and illuminating this verdant forest. Some ferns have withered, but many more new leaves are sprouting vigorously, a testament to the cyclical, ever-renewing power of nature. The entire trail is primarily a gentle downhill slope, allowing for light steps and a relaxed mind and body. The forest is silent, save for the rustling of the wind, the soft thud of footsteps, and the crisp sound of bear bells accompanying you along the way. 🍃 Reflections on the "Forest of Rebirth" Hike Other mountain trails are for sightseeing, but the trails of Kumano heal the soul. Later, at Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine, I saw the character "Su" (meaning "rebirth") again. My first encounter with "Su" on the ancient trail, and my second at the Hongu Shrine—a perfect echo, a complete loop, perfectly embodying the Kumano belief: Hiking is a form of spiritual practice; arrival is rebirth. No need to rush, no need to hurry, just walk slowly in the deep, ancient forest, slowly emptying your mind. Leave your weariness and worries in the mountains, and bring back lightness, clarity, and rebirth to the world. This is the most precious gift that the Kumano Kodo offers to its pilgrims. ✨ Hiking Tips for "Forest of Rebirth" 💡Core Meaning: Let go of the past and start anew Location: Along the middle path of the Kumano Kodo, from Hoshinmon-Oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine 🚶Distance: Approximately 7km, gentle downhill, beginner-friendly ⏱Hiking Duration: Approximately 2.5–3 hours 🚌Access: Take a bus from Kawayu Onsen to Hoshinmon-Oji. Buses are also available from Shingu and Kiitanabe.

Transferring at JR Shingu Station, I saw a striking Chinese-style archway right after leaving the station. I did not expect to find a Xu Fu Park in Shingu, this small coastal city in the eastern part of the Kii Peninsula. Legend has it that over 2,000 years ago, the Qin dynasty alchemist Xu Fu was ordered by the First Emperor of Qin to set sail across the sea with thousands of young boys and girls in search of the elixir of life. He eventually landed in Kumano Shingu, settled down, and passed on farming and medical skills to the local people. This park was built to commemorate this legend that spanned mountains and seas. ✨ Key highlights of Xu Fu Park · Chinese-style archway gate. The iconic colorful Chinese archway at the entrance, with its orange-red eaves and painted decorations, stands out remarkably among the surrounding Japanese-style buildings. · Tomb of Qin Xu Fu. The core historical site in the park is this tombstone erected in 1736 during the Edo period. The inscription was written by the Confucian scholar Li Meixi of that time, and it is a designated cultural property of Shingu City. Beside the tomb stands the Monument of Seven Tombs, commemorating the seven high-ranking officials who accompanied Xu Fu across the sea. · Xu Fu statue and Furo-ike (Pond of Immortality). A stone statue of Xu Fu stands in the park, gazing toward the eastern sea. The park is planted with Lindera strychnifolia, the legendary herb Xu Fu sought, echoing the ancient story of his quest for the elixir. Two thousand years ago, Xu Fu crossed the vast East Sea, and the fleet searching for the elixir docked here, never to leave again. Since then, this land has held an ancient legend from China. If one day you set foot on the Kumano Kodo and happen to pass through Shingu, remember to take a look at Xu Fu and chat with him in your hometown dialect. 📍 Visitor tips · Transportation: A 2-minute walk from JR Shingu Station. It is suitable for a quick visit while transferring in Shingu. The park is small and can be explored in 20 minutes. · Admission: Free entry. Open from 8:30 AM–5:00 PM. · Recommended Shingu itinerary: Kumano Hayatama Taisha, Asuka Shrine, and Kamikura Shrine. These can be visited together on the same day.

Walking over from Hayatama Taisha, before I had recovered from that dazzling vermilion, the rustic stone torii gate and blue banners of Asuka Shrine came into view, along with Mount Horai behind it. The name "Mount Horai" is linked to the legend of Xu Fu crossing the sea. Ancient people believed that the mountain behind Asuka Shrine was the very Mount Horai where Xu Fu sought the elixir of life, and that this coast was where he landed on his journey east. In mountain worship, this mountain is seen as a vessel for deities to inhabit, and since ancient times, it has been a coastal sacred site guarding the river mouth and a place to pray for safe voyages. Asuka Shrine is a branch shrine of Hayatama Taisha and is also one of the 99 Oji shrines of the Kumano Kodo. In ancient times, pilgrims traveling to Kumano would stop here upon reaching Shingu to rest, perform purification rituals, and pray with a calm heart. Its main deity is Koto-saka-no-o-no-mikoto, who presides over resolving conflicts and severing past ties. It also enshrines Kumano Hayatama-no-Okami and the guardian deity of the underworld, serving as a sacred site at the river mouth that guards the boundary between the living world and the underworld. The moment I stepped onto the approach, I felt the unique sense of ritual inherent to this river-mouth sacred site. The rustic stone torii gate carries the heavy texture of accumulated time. The stone-paved approach is covered in moss of varying shades. This is the mouth of the Kumano River. On both sides of the path, rows of azure banners with white characters stand against the lush green mountains, bringing the scent of the ocean. As the sea breeze blows, the banners flutter gently, and the prayers of the faithful echo in the wind. Continuing forward, the main hall, with its contrasting vermilion and bright white, is nestled among the trees at the foot of Mount Horai. Its colors are clean and clear, and its design is simple and restrained, fully embodying the peace and solemnity of the ancient shrine. To the left of the main hall is a small stone shrine called "Jofuku-gu". Legend has it that Xu Fu, who crossed the sea, led his people to land on Mount Horai and taught them farming, fishing, and hunting skills here. Later generations built this shrine to commemorate Xu Fu, which is a unique cross-cultural mark in the Kumano pilgrimage. Most sacred sites are hidden in high mountains and steep ridges, but Asuka Shrine stands guard at the river mouth. There are no steep stone steps here, only the sea breeze blowing across the foot of Mount Horai, quietly gazing out at the Kumano Sea. Mountain sacred sites seek to reach the divine by ascending. The river mouth, however, is the boundary between this shore and the other. A single river separates two worlds. To face the sea is to head toward the other shore. 🌊 Asuka Shrine visitor tips · Transport: 10 mins walk from Shingu Station; luggage storage is available at Shingu Station · Admission: Free · Terrain: Flat and gentle throughout, no climbing required · Duration: 30 mins · Suitable for: Pilgrims of the ancient trail, and lovers of cultural architecture and historical legends · Recommended nearby route: Shingu Station > 10 mins walk > Asuka Shrine > 10 mins walk > Shingu Castle Ruins > 10 mins walk > Hayatama Taisha > 15 mins walk > Kamikura Shrine > 15 mins walk > Shingu Station

Continue upward from Daimon-zaka and walk along the pilgrimage path for about 20 minutes to reach Nachi Taisha. Nachi Taisha, Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Hongu Taisha are collectively known as the "Kumano Sanzan" and serve as the head shrines for over 4,000 Kumano shrines across Japan. Since the Heian period, large numbers of nobles have come to worship here, marking the rise of the Kumano pilgrimage. Nachi Taisha has been a sacred site for mountain worship since ancient times, primarily enshrining the deity Kumano Fusumi-no-Okami. According to the Japanese syncretic theory of honji suijaku (manifestation of the original ground), Buddhas and Bodhisattvas manifested as local Japanese deities to save all living beings. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are the original entities, while the Japanese deities are their manifestations. The original Buddha of Fusumi-no-Okami is the Thousand-Armed Kannon, who fulfills all wishes and protects the fulfillment of people's prayers. Therefore, Nachi Taisha is also known as "Musubi-no-Miya" (Shrine of Bonds), signifying "connection, realization, and the fulfillment of all wishes." ✨Highlights of Nachi Taisha · Omotesando stone steps. The main hall of Nachi Taisha is built atop 467 stone steps (some say 473, depending on where you start counting). Climbing these steps is a pilgrimage in itself; walk slowly upward, pass through the dense forest, cleanse your mind, and offer your prayers with devotion. · Kumano-zukuri architectural style. The main hall of Nachi Taisha features the unique Kumano-zukuri style, characterized by a cypress bark (hiwadabuki) hip-and-gable roof. The roof has a gentle slope, and the building is wide and horizontally expansive, representing a highly distinctive regional style of Japanese shrine architecture. · Mikagehiko Shrine. A sub-shrine of Nachi Taisha, it enshrines Take-tsunomi-no-Mikoto, also known as the three-legged crow, Yatagarasu. In Kumano belief, Yatagarasu guides pilgrims along the ancient path and protects them on their sacred journey. Yatagarasu is also the most iconic symbol of the Kumano Sanzan, representing guidance, protection, and the fulfillment of wishes. · Giant camphor tree. It is approximately 850 years old, with a trunk circumference of about 13 meters and a height of about 25 meters. Legend has it that this ancient camphor tree is where Yatagarasu rested. The shimenawa (sacred straw rope) wrapped around the tree symbolizes a sacred space, indicating that this tree is a sacred tree inhabited by a deity. Our pilgrimage to Mt. Nachi was accompanied by a gentle, steady rain. Rainwater dripped from the eaves of the shrine like strings of lustrous crystal beads, falling from the sky to the earth. May entering the realm of Nachi today bring you fulfilled wishes in the future. ✨Visitor tips: · Location: Nachi Taisha, Nachikatsuura, Wakayama · Public transport: From JR Kii-Katsuura Station, take the Nankai Bus Nachisan Line (Route 31) and get off at the Nachi Taisha stop · Recommended one-day Mt. Nachi pilgrimage route: Daimon-zaka – Nachi Taisha – Seiganto-ji Temple – Three-story Pagoda – Nachi Falls (Hiro-jinja Shrine) · Carry enough Japanese yen with you, as card payments are not accepted in the shrine area (only cash or PayPay)

Visited on Saturday, October 25, 2025. After exploring Kumano Hongu Taisha, we drove to Shingu City and reached Kumano Hayatama Taisha around 4:00 PM, spending about half an hour on the grounds. ⛩ The Vermilion Shrines As one of the Kumano Sanzan, Kumano Hayatama Taisha features a stunning row of bright vermilion shrines and corridors that really pop against a clear blue sky. Behind the main worship hall, the layered rooflines and ceremonial roof fins (Chigi) create a beautiful silhouette. The grounds also feature World Heritage markers and miniature torii gates. 🌳 The Sacred Nagi Tree Standing proudly before the Shinmon gate is the sacred "Nagi" tree, a designated National Natural Monument estimated to be 1,000 years old. About 15 million years ago, the Kumano region witnessed the largest volcanic eruption in Earth's history. The magma from that eruption solidified into igneous rock, and the entire area was gradually reborn and transformed. It is believed that spirits dwell within natural wonders like giant rocks and waterfalls; thus, nature nurtured the Kumano faith and the pilgrimage routes of the Kumano Kodo. In this mystical land, what surprises await your exploration? Embark on a hiking journey along the Kumano Kodo and experience the endless adventures along the way. First, let's learn about the Kumano Kodo In 2004, UNESCO registered the Kumano Kodo Iseji route as part of the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range" World Heritage site. The Kumano Kodo Center overlooks Owase Bay and was established to promote awareness and understanding of the trails. Through exhibitions, events, and resources, it introduces the history, nature, and culture of the Kumano Kodo, passing it down to the next generation. The building itself is crafted from 6,549 pillars of durable Owase cypress (hinoki), combining beauty with strength. At night, the center is brilliantly lit. They even offer free Owase cypress chips, reflecting their thoughtful hospitality. 【Magose-toge Pass: A Trail with Stunning Views of Kumano】 Located on the Iseji route between Kihoku Town and Owase City, this path features a stone-paved road stretching for several kilometers, surrounded by cypress trees and ferns. It is renowned for its breathtaking scenery. Points of interest along the way include the Nakitori Jizo and the Magose-toge Tea House. From the tea house, you can gaze down at the town below. With moss-covered stones underfoot and sunlight filtering through the forest, the scenery is picture-perfect. This historic trail is surrounded by greenery, making a stroll here incredibly refreshing—but please mind your footing for safety. The Kihoku Town Tourism Association also offers experience activities where you can dress in Edo-period traveler's clothing to pay your respects at Nakitori Jizo. 【Matsumoto-toge Pass: Crafted with Local Techniques】 At an altitude of 135 meters, even beginner hikers can easily reach the summit. The stone walls along the river showcase construction methods unique to this rainy region. Randomly stacked stones withstand earthquakes and heavy rains, while waterways disperse the force of the flow to prevent road collapses. At the pass, a Jizo statue standing about 170 cm tall welcomes visitors, surrounded by bamboo groves. Legend has it that in the Edo period, a marksman mistook this Jizo statue for a monster and shot it. The rest pavilion offers a view of Shichiri Mihama Beach. Beyond this point, there are no more mountain paths leading to Shingu. Pilgrims can pause here to reflect on the Kumano Hayatama Taisha Shrine in Shingu. 【Hauntingly Beautiful Natural Scenery】 While most of the Kumano Kodo is covered by forest, the Iseji route runs close to the magnificent Kumano-nada Sea, which stretches east from Mie Prefecture. This World Heritage site features countless bizarrely shaped rocks, large and small, carved by crashing waves. Legend says this place was originally called "Oni-no-Iwaya" (Ogre's Cave). It later became known as "Onigajo" (Ogre's Castle) because a notorious pirate named Tagamaru hid here. The massive tuff cliffs, shaped by erosion and earthquakes, resemble ogre faces. Walking along the approximately 1-kilometer path, you can feel the majestic power of the rocky terrain. This is the southernmost point of the Ise-Shima Rias coastline; to the south lies the scenic Shichiri Mihama Beach. 【Japan's Oldest Shrine and a World Heritage Site】 This shrine is recorded in Japan's first history book, "Nihon Shoki," as the birthplace of Japan. The sacred object (shintai) is a giant rock, said to be the tomb of "Izanami-no-Mikoto," the mother of the gods. She is the mother of the fire god Kagutsuchi and Amaterasu Omikami, who is enshrined at Ise Grand Shrine. People view this as the root of the Japanese nation, attracting many travelers seeking spiritual energy. Every year on February 2nd, a festival is held to pray for national peace and a bountiful harvest. On October 2nd, the "Kake-nawa Shinji" (Rope Hanging Ritual) takes place, where a long woven rope is offered by hanging it between the sacred rock and a sacred tree. At the nearby Kumano Hana-no-Iwaya Roadside Station, you can taste fresh Mitarashi Dango for 120 yen. 【Shichiri Mihama Beach: A Healing Melody of Waves and Pebbles】 This beach is Japan's longest gravel coastline, spanning Kumano City, Mihama Town, and Kiho Town. It is part of the "Hama Kaido" (Coastal Road), the only coastal section of the Kumano Kodo Iseji. The Mihama pebbles covering the shore were washed down from the upper reaches of the Kumano River. They are smooth and delicate to the touch. When waves hit the shore, the pebbles produce a pleasant tinkling sound. Walking barefoot allows the pebbles to stimulate pressure points on the soles of your feet, revitalizing tired legs. Only licensed professional quarrymen are allowed to collect Mihama pebbles, but anyone can sit here and quietly listen to the symphony of waves and stones, enjoying a peaceful moment. 【A Harmonious Natural Utopia】 These layered terraces, numbering in the thousands, are called "Senmaida." Maruyama Senmaida has a long history; as early as 1601, there were records of 2,240 terrace plots. Although the number decreased over time, local residents worked together to restore them. Today, through the efforts of the "Rice Field Ownership System" and the Maruyama Senmaida Preservation Society, 1,340 terraces are maintained, making it the largest Senmaida in Japan. Mr. Tanaka from the Kumano City Furusato Promotion Corporation says, "The scenery of the terraces changes constantly with the seasons and the time of day, never failing to amaze visitors." Maruyama Senmaida is a masterpiece of human wisdom, with scenery as dreamlike as a utopia.

JR Pass Selection: The "Ise, Kumano, and Wakayama Area Pass" is highly recommended. This 5-day pass allows you to ride JR Limited Express trains and some Kumano Kotsu buses (Kii-Katsuura-Nachiyama, Shingu-Hongu Taisha-mae, etc.), saving you money and hassle. 2. Bus Schedules are Key: Buses between the three mountains of Kumano have limited frequency and long intervals. It is recommended to download the "Kumano Kotsu Bus" timetable PDF in advance or use the mobile app to check. The journey from Shingu to Hongu Taisha is particularly long, lasting 1.5 hours, so be sure to plan your connecting time carefully. 3. Nachiyama Area Pass: If you plan to travel frequently between Katsuura and Nachiyama, you can purchase the "Nachi Area World Heritage Bus Pass," which costs 1,260 yen for adults and allows unlimited rides for the day. 4. Best Time for Photography: The classic angle for Nachi Taisha Shrine, its three-story pagoda, and the waterfall is best taken in the morning with the sun shining through, making it the ideal first stop. 5. Recommended Two-Day, One-Night Trip: A day trip covering all three shrines, including long-distance travel, is extremely demanding on physical strength and adaptability. It is highly recommended to stay overnight in Kii-Katsuura or Shingu, and then enjoy a World Heritage-listed hot spring the following day. The entire World Heritage tour can be completed using the JR Pass and local buses. Making Nachi Taisha the first stop ensures a safe and enjoyable experience, allowing you to leisurely immerse yourself in the sacred atmosphere of each of the three shrines in the afternoon. #KumanoSanzanDayTrip #KumanoKodo #KumanoNachiTaisha #NachiWaterfall #KumanoHonguTaisha #JRPassWakayama

🌀 Ichiran Ramen, also known as "Exam Ramen" in Thailand, is a legendary ramen restaurant from Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, famous for its rich, traditional tonkotsu (pork bone broth) ramen. 🚩🚩 Key Highlights of Ichiran Ramen 🚩🚩 ✔️ The seating is designed like an exam room, with individual cubicles and side partitions to allow diners to focus on the ramen's flavor without making eye contact, ensuring high levels of privacy. ✔️ The order form resembles an exam, where customers mark their preferences on a paper sheet, such as noodle firmness, broth richness, oiliness, amount of garlic, green onions, chashu pork, and the spiciness level of the secret sauce. ✔️ The broth is made from 100% natural pork bones, simmered until rich and flavorful, served with the restaurant's unique, thin, straight fresh ramen noodles. ✔️ The food is served uniquely; staff deliver the ramen bowl through an opening in front of the seat. Then, bamboo curtains are drawn down to allow us to enjoy our meal in privacy. ✅✅ Personally, I love this ramen restaurant. Whenever I come to Japan, I always try to eat it. Luckily, there are many branches in various cities across Japan. The flavor is uniquely delicious and rich. The restaurant's special spicy sauce is incredibly satisfyingly spicy. ✅✅ Open 24 hours a day, every day, with no days off. 📍📍 Location: Ichiran Ramen, Shinjuku Station Central East Exit branch, is located on the B1 floor of the Peace Building in Shinjuku. 📸 #japantrip : 31/05/2025 - 03/06/2025 #ichiranramen #shinjuku #japan #japanfood #japantravel #IchiranRamen #JapaneseRamen #Shinjuku #JapaneseFood #JapaneseRestaurant #Japan #JapanTravel #TravelUntilMyKidsComplain

Located in Nachikatsuura, Kumano Nachi Taisha is one of the Kumano Sanzan, and it was the second stop on my Kumano Sanzan trip this time. I split my itinerary for the three grand shrines over two days. The day before, I spent half a day exploring Kumano Hongu Taisha, and stayed overnight at the Shingu Hotel in Shingu City. The next day, I took a JR train from Shingu Station to Nachi Station. Right outside Nachi Station, there's a direct bus to Nachi Taisha, which is super convenient. However, keep in mind that the trains and buses don't run very frequently, so good time management is crucial. Since I visited on a weekday, it wasn't crowded at all, making for a fantastic experience. Just a heads-up: the entire route involves climbing stairs. Along the Nachisan approach, there are several restaurants and snack shops where you can take a breather and grab a bite to recharge. You can also go check out the famous Nachi Falls. Unfortunately, since it's winter, the water volume was relatively low, but it is definitely still worth a visit!

Arriving at Kumano Hayatama Taisha, the final stop on my Kumano Sanzan itinerary, I guess you could say I've unlocked the Kumano Sanzan achievement, haha, the shrine houses over 1,200 items designated as national treasures, along with a sacred Nagi tree that's over a thousand years old. As mentioned in my previous post about the Shingu Castle Ruins, it's just a 10-minute walk from the ruins to Hayatama Taisha, the Kumano River right next to Hayatama Taisha, serves as the natural border between Wakayama and Mie Prefectures. I stayed in Shingu City for two days, and you won't see many pedestrians on the streets, · et alone tourists, there are absolutely no massive crowds here, so you can truly take your time to appreciate and savor every spot, however, keep in mind that local shops close quite early, · uckily, if you're basing yourself around the Shingu Hotel, there are two 24-hour convenience stores within a 5-minute walk. One last thing to note, this Kumano Sanzan trip requires a significant investment of time, is it ultimately worth it? That really depends on personal preference.

As mentioned in my previous article, this trip focused on visiting the Kumano Sanzan, and since they are located in the same city as the Kumano Hayatama Taisha, I decided to drop by the Shingu Castle Ruins and Asuka Shrine as well. My first stop was Asuka Shrine, a relatively small shrine, with a World Heritage stone monument standing right outside. It only took about 15 minutes to look around. By the way, you can also find the Shingu Castle stamp here, specifically inside the Museum of History and Folklore. A short 10-minute walk from there will take you to the Shingu Castle Ruins. There are quite a few stairs to climb up to the castle. On my way up, I occasionally spotted local residents, using the area for their daily workouts. Once you reach the foundation of the castle keep, you'll be treated to a panoramic view of the surrounding scenery. It takes about 30 minutes to explore the entire site. If you're ever visiting Shingu City, these spots are definitely worth a quick detour.
