The scenery of Yilong Lake in Shiping is excellent. It is one of Yunnan's nine plateau lakes, known as the "Pearl of the Plateau," and is a free-to-enter 4A-level scenic area. Yilong Lake boasts clear water, where you can spot the 'touchstone of water quality,' the sea cabbage flower, which demands extremely high water quality, proving its excellent ecological environment. The iconic landscape of Yilong Lake is that row of flat-top Crape Myrtle trees. Their unique shape is incredibly pleasing to the eye. Beneath the Crape Myrtle trees are the starting points for two routes: the left route and the right route. Right Route (Figures 1-10) This is a free-to-enter 4A-level wetland park with a 3-kilometer-long wooden boardwalk leading directly to the center of the lake. It's perfect for morning exercises, after-dinner strolls, or watching a sunset. This wooden boardwalk is only suitable for walking, not cycling. For cycling, there's a dedicated cycling path, which is further from the lake. Personally, I feel a leisurely walk is best, as it takes you directly to the center of the lake, allowing you to experience the plateau lake most intimately, and it's also a paradise for birdwatching. Left Route (Figures 12-20) Cycling around the lake is highly recommended. This closed ecological corridor is approximately 37 kilometers long, completely separated from motor vehicles, and has been rated as "China's Most Beautiful Plateau Lake Dedicated Cycling Path," making it very safe. The route is mostly flat, with a total elevation gain of only about 30 meters, making it easy for both beginners and experienced enthusiasts to enjoy. I visited in early April and saw pink Bauhinia flowers and purple-blue Jacaranda already in bloom. If you want to see them in full, spectacular bloom, it will be even more vibrant in another 5-6 days. The Left Route is also called Xiao Ruicheng, offering a rich experience of connecting "lake-forest-field-village." There's a cycling station at the starting point under the Crape Myrtle trees for bike rentals, and along the way, there are supply points and restrooms every 3-5 kilometers. It's recommended to visit in the crisp autumn air of September-November, or to see the spring flowers from February-May. The entire Yilong Lake area takes about half a day to explore. We played from noon until 6 PM and had a great time, and it's free! After leaving Yilong Lake, don't rush to take a taxi. Across the street is Hubin Road (Figure 20), the most representative main road in Shiping County. This road runs alongside Yilong Lake, featuring diamond-patterned bricks and a central tactile paving strip. It's one of the widest and most beautifully landscaped streets in the county. We carried watermelons we bought on the way, which were transported from Jinghong. No matter how much you buy, the seller will cut them into small pieces, put them in a fresh-keeping box, and provide toothpicks. Walking along the wide, tree-lined avenue, eating sweet watermelon, it's hard to describe how much local charm and enjoyment it brings. It was truly a wonderful experience...

The wheels roll over fallen petals, and the flower trees on both sides are within reach. The wind blows petals onto your face, and the breeze during the ride smells fragrant. Record a video casually; no need for background music, the birdsong and wind sounds are healing enough~ 4. Dusk Flower Scenery🌇 You must come at sunset! The sunlight dyes the petals golden pink, the lake surface sparkles, and the shadows of the flower trees stretch long. Shípíng (石屏) is an ancient town in the Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture in southeastern Yunnan, about 240 km (150 miles) from Kunming, the provincial capital. The stone-paved streets are really pretty, and the local tofu with all kinds of mushrooms is delicious (though some of the wild mushrooms can be poisonous, so you have to be careful!). I stayed in a guesthouse that was built in a 300-year-old traditional house—it was such a cozy place to relax. The courtyard there was especially nice, perfect for sitting down with a cup of tea.

Yilong Lake (异龙湖) in 石屏 is a beautiful spot where you could easily spend the whole day strolling around. It’s a large freshwater lake in Shiping County, Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan, with a surface area of about 32 square kilometers (12 sq mi). The scenery is stunning, especially when the colorful lotus flowers are in bloom. The lake reflects the blue sky like a giant mirror, creating a calm and peaceful vibe. Shiping County Government Office, located at No. 3 Xizheng Street, Shiping County, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, was the administrative center of Shiping County during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Covering an area of about 25 mu, it was originally built in the Ming dynasty and rebuilt during the Guangxu period of the Qing dynasty. It is a well-preserved ancient architectural complex from the Ming and Qing periods with great historical and cultural value. The entire county government complex consists of the main hall, second hall, third hall, covered corridor, side rooms, and rear garden. These buildings follow a layout of three courtyards with three bays each and a quadrangle with five wells, mainly featuring blue bricks and tiles, showcasing the rich architectural style of the Ming and Qing dynasties. All buildings use traditional wooden structures, with none of the wooden columns held together by nails but connected entirely by mortise and tenon joints, fully demonstrating the craftsmanship of wooden architecture during the Ming and Qing periods. The layout of the county government complex is precise and structurally sound. The main hall is one of the key buildings, a spacious and bright two-story structure with five bays wide and one bay deep. A plaque reading “Bright mirror hanging high” is hung on the front of the main hall, fully reflecting the feudal society’s judicial ideal of fairness and integrity. The second hall, where the county magistrate handled official business, is three bays wide and one bay deep, exuding a strong feudal official atmosphere. The third hall, where the county magistrate received distinguished guests, is five bays wide and one bay deep. Passing through the covered corridor leads to the side rooms and rear garden. The entire county government complex is well preserved and reasonably arranged, fully showcasing the architectural craftsmanship of the Ming and Qing periods. In addition, the county government houses many precious cultural relics and historical materials, such as the “Everlasting fame” plaque and Qing dynasty stone tablets. These relics and historical materials are important resources for studying ancient Chinese culture. Shiping County Government Office is not only a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit in Yunnan but also a national AAA-level tourist attraction. The climate in August is pleasant (around 25℃, so comfortable), lotus fields are in full bloom, ancient streets and villages are full of charm, and prices are surprisingly low (you can eat until you're stuffed for about CNY 50 per person). With delicious food, fun activities, and not too many crowds, it's simply the perfect escape from the city 🌿 🏞️ Must-visit attractions 1️⃣ Shiping Ancient City 🏮 Stroll through the bluestone streets and alleys, lined with old houses and ancestral temples. The ancient city in August is full of life! You can easily buy a bowl of cold spoon noodles for CNY 5, or eat your fill of Shiping tofu for CNY 10.
