The Devil's Bridge was built in the early 16th century. In its place is an ancient Roman bridge connecting the White Sea to Thrace. The bridge was built on the orders of Sultan Selim I.
It is the largest and most famous Ottoman bridge in the Rhodopes.
The bridge is 56 meters long and 3.5 meters wide. The central arch reaches a height of almost 12 meters.
For centuries, the bridge has been shrouded in legend and mystery.
Legend has it that for a long time no one could build a bridge at that location. Many attempts by builders have failed due to the turbulent waters of the Arda River.
Dimitar, a young builder from the nearby village (now town) Nedelino, accepted the challenge and took on the difficult task.
One night, the devil appeared to him and told him that if he could meet two conditions, he would reveal to him the secret of how to build a strong and ancient bridge.
The bridge will be built in 40 days and the devil’s face will be embedded in the base of the structure. The face must be both visible and invisible.
Dimitar the Builder carried out all of the Devil's orders but soon died, taking the secret with him to the afterlife.
