Stonehaven travel guide and discussion

I struck gold on my recent trip to the UK! Aberdeen is a city full of romance and surprises, and I can't let anyone miss out. Here's my travel guide for you~ Itinerary Day 1: I landed in Aberdeen in the morning and took a taxi straight to my hotel to drop off my luggage. After settling in, I walked to Old Aberdeen. It has a medieval feel, with ancient buildings lining the streets and colorful little houses that are perfect for photos. I spent about 3 hours exploring. Day 2: I took a taxi early in the morning to Dunnottar Castle to watch the sunrise. The castle's ruins evoke a sense of history, and the cliffs against the sea are breathtakingly beautiful. In the afternoon, I took the bus back to the city center and visited the Aberdeen Art Gallery, immersing myself in the world of art for about 2 hours. Day 3: In the morning, I took a train to Stonehaven to visit the fairytale-like Stonehaven Castle by the sea. I strolled along the beach, enjoying a pleasant afternoon for 3 hours. In the afternoon, I returned to Aberdeen to prepare for my departure. Highlights The sunrise at Dunnottar Castle was truly amazing! Standing on the castle perched on the cliff, bathed in golden sunlight, overlooking the vast sea, with waves crashing against the rocks, it was a spectacular sight I'll never forget! The streets of Old Aberdeen also have a unique charm. The ancient St. Machar's Cathedral is solemn and majestic, with colorful stained-glass windows shining in the sunlight. Food Recommendations You must visit the Silver Darling! It's located at Maritime Quay, a fantastic spot where you can dine while enjoying the sea view. Their seafood platter is a must-try. The crab, shrimp, and shellfish are incredibly fresh, bursting with the flavor of the ocean. The smoked salmon is also exquisite, with a delicate texture that melts in your mouth. Accommodation Experience I stayed at the Douglas Hotel in Aberdeen's city center. It's conveniently located just steps away from bus stops and the subway station. The room was cozy, with comfortable bedding, ensuring a good night's sleep. The staff at the front desk were incredibly helpful and always available to assist with any questions. It offered great value for money. Things to Note The road to Dunnottar Castle is a bit rough, so comfortable athletic shoes are recommended. Also, there's no shade at the castle, so be sure to wear sunscreen. Aberdeen's weather can be unpredictable, so it's wise to carry an umbrella. Aberdeen is truly a place full of surprises. Every sight, every bite of food, has left me captivated. I'm sure you'll fall in love with it too. Start planning your trip now!

Sometimes a place doesn’t give you what you planned for, it gives you something more honest instead. At Dunnottar Castle, the Haar softened everything into silence, and when we returned for a second try, the weather still held onto its misty mood. But instead of waiting for perfection, we chose to capture the moment as it was. This feels like a quiet reminder that travel is not always about ideal conditions.sometimes it’s about showing up again, staying open, and finding beauty in the atmosphere you’re given. I’m really glad we gave it a second try.

These ruins perched on their cliff look peaceful enough... And yet, in 1652, a handful of locals hid the Scottish crown here to keep it safe from Cromwell's men, smuggled out right under the siege. Dunnottar, quite the tale.

🔝📸Sea mist, epic cliffs, and the brooding ruins of Dunnottar Castle—Stonehaven brings major Scotland drama! 🌊⛅️ Caught this moody scene on a rainy morning, just as low clouds brushed the ancient stone walls and the wild North Sea crashed below. The muted greens and grays make it feel like you’ve traveled back in time. No filter needed—the raw atmosphere is unreal and the view from the hiking path is truly one-of-a-kind. Tip: Wear sturdy shoes (it gets muddy!) and arrive right at 09:00 when Dunnottar Castle opens (Stonehaven AB39 2TL) for the most peaceful experience. #europeonbudget Dunnottar Castle is jaw-dropping—perched on a rugged cliff above the North Sea, it feels like a fortress torn from a fantasy novel. I walked from Stonehaven, a scenic 50-minute trek with uneven paths and a steep incline, but absolutely worth it. The views shift dramatically as you approach, and the Stonehaven War Memorial en route adds a poignant touch. Once inside, the atmosphere is hauntingly beautiful. The ruins whisper stories of Scottish royalty, rebellion, and resilience. Every building is well-marked with rich historical detail, making it easy to imagine life centuries ago. The crashing waves below and sweeping coastal views make this one of Scotland’s most unforgettable sites.

Stonehaven 05.06.2025 It was an impromptu trip to Stonehaven from Glasgow. The weather is nice, the sun is perfect. Had a friend that drove us around the town and managed to see tons of birds from our first target, Puffins to Guillemot and Razorbill. ( and of course, gulls😆 )

Driving northeast from Edinburgh, through rolling hills and under low-hanging clouds, I arrived at Scotland's eastern coast. My destination was Dunnottar Castle, a historic ruin perched on a cliff near the town of Stonehaven. It was a beauty both solitary and majestic, one that took my breath away. Even before reaching the entrance, the castle came into view from afar. It stood silently atop towering sea cliffs, surrounded by the raging waves of the North Sea. The wind was strong and biting, as if carrying the timeless whispers of the Middle Ages, sweeping away all worldly noise. Walking along a winding path, the view gradually opened up, and the castle's silhouette became clearer. It wasn't the pristine "fairy tale castle" one might imagine, but its ruins and imperfections gave it a sense of authenticity and soul. Dunnottar Castle dates back to the 5th century. It was once a vital defensive stronghold for the Scottish royal family and a secret fortress for safeguarding royal treasures. Legend has it that in the 17th century, during Cromwell's invasion, loyalists risked their lives to hide the Scottish Crown Jewels in the castle's cellar, ultimately preserving these national symbols.

#uktrip Dunnottar Castle is a true marvel. Taking the 50-minute walk from Stonehaven station provides a unique approach with spectacular views that differ from the car park route. While the path includes uneven terrain and a steep incline, the scenery and ambiance are worth the effort. Along the way, the Stonehaven War Memorial is a noteworthy stop. Once inside, the castle’s ruins transport you through history, enriched by detailed signs that narrate its story. The atmosphere, views, and historical depth make this experience unforgettable—a must-visit for explorers and history enthusiasts alike.
