We discovered the Shanghai Postal Museum while walking from Nanjing Road towards Suzhou Creek. The impressive building immediately caught our attention, so we decided to go inside and see what was behind its grand façade. Admission was free when we visited, yet there were surprisingly few people inside. After the busy streets of central Shanghai, the quiet halls made the museum feel especially peaceful. We followed the complete exhibition route, which introduces the history of postal services through stamps, letters, uniforms, models and various pieces of equipment. The collection of old postage stamps was much larger and more interesting than I expected. Some of the designs felt like miniature works of art, reflecting different periods, places and events. I am not a stamp collector, however, so the building itself became the most memorable part of the visit. Instead of rushing through the displays, I kept looking at the spacious halls, high ceilings, staircases and architectural details. The historic interior gives the museum a very different atmosphere from a modern exhibition space. It feels as though the building is not simply housing the collection but is also one of its most important exhibits. We eventually completed the full museum route and entered the inner courtyard. This quieter space offered another perspective on the architecture and was a pleasant final stop before returning to our walk along Suzhou Creek. The entire visit took us less than an hour, including time for photographs. It was long enough to see the exhibition without hurrying, but short enough to fit naturally into a walking route through the area. I would not describe the Shanghai Postal Museum as a place that requires half a day. Instead, it is an atmospheric and convenient stop for anyone exploring Suzhou Creek. On one hand, you have the classic white walls, black tiles, tiny bridges, and flowing water. On the other, you're surrounded by overlapping voices, mouthwatering aromas, and boats slowly cruising by. The historic streets remain full of life, rather than just an "empty shell" of an ancient town for tourists to check off their list. I wasn't in a rush to walk the entire street. Instead, I frequently stopped to admire the river views and eventually found a cozy riverside spot to sit and relax. Sometimes, travel isn't just about seeking peace and quiet. Blending into the crowd and observing how people from different places enjoy the night can be a joy in itself. Since the streets in the old city are narrow and non-local vehicles are restricted, driving yourself is strongly discouraged. Stepping into this Ming Dynasty garden, you finally understand the meaning of "a new view at every turn." The intricate water layouts, winding corridors, and ornate lattice windows perfectly showcase the refined aesthetics of Jiangnan gardens. However, as the foremost of China's four great classical gardens, its fame attracts massive crowds. For the day: Humble Administrator’s Garden → Suzhou Museum → Pingjiang Road → canals in the evening. 💡 My take: A must-do trip if it's your first time in the region. 2. 🌊 HANGZHOU • 杭州 🚄 From ~45 minutes In terms of high-speed rail time, this is practically a suburb of Shanghai, though it feels like a completely different city. Hundreds of trains run between Shanghai and Hangzhou, with the fastest G-trains completing the route in about 45 minutes. The golden rule for one day: Don't try to see all of Hangzhou. Focus on one part of the city. For the day: West Lake → Beishan Street → a lakeside walk. Or: West Lake → Lingyin Temple → back to the lake by evening. 💡 If you like it, Hangzhou is exactly the kind of city where you should stay overnight on a second visit. 3. 🏯 NANJING • 南京 🚄 Fastest trains from ~59 minutes This is where things get interesting. Nanjing is significantly further than Suzhou, but the high-speed rail makes it a perfectly viable one-day destination: Trip.com currently shows about 348 direct trains a day with a minimum travel time of around 59 minutes. But you need to leave early. For a day trip, I would choose only one theme: 🏛 History → Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum + Zijin Mountain area or 🏙 City → Presidential Palace → old quarters → Confucius Temple in the evening. Don't try to combine all of Nanjing. It's too big. 💡 For whom: If you want to add a city with a completely different historical weight to your Shanghai trip. 4. 🌳 WUXI • 无锡 🚄 About 50 minutes on many fast flights I wouldn't add Wuxi for the sake of another Chinese city center, but rather for Taihu Lake. There are hundreds of trains a day from Shanghai; among current trips, Trip.com shows high-speed options taking about 49–53 minutes. For the day: Yuantouzhu → Taihu Lake → a walk by the water. 🌸 Wuxi is especially interesting to visit during the blossom season. 💡 For whom: If after a few days in Shanghai you crave greenery, water, and open space. 3 MORE TRIPS + HOW TO PLAN A WEEK 5. 🏮 SHAOXING • 绍兴 🚄 Fastest direct trains from ~1 hr 04 min I would save this option for those who have already exhausted the standard "Shanghai + Suzhou + Hangzhou" set. Shaoxing is much more interesting as a city of canals and everyday old Jiangnan life than as a list of major attractions. Currently, there are about 32 direct trains a day between Shanghai and Shaoxing, with a minimum stated travel time of about 1 hour 4 minutes. For the day: Lu Xun Native Place → Cangqiao Straight Street → canals → old bridges. 💡 For whom: If you want old China, but don't need another touristy water town. 6. 🌊 JIAXING • 嘉兴 🚄 From ~28 minutes A very easy escape from the metropolis that is somehow much less frequently considered by international tourists. Specific high-speed trains from Shanghai Hongqiao and Shanghai South to Jiaxing South take about 28–35 minutes. The main point for a first encounter: South Lake • 南湖 I wouldn't try to pack the day with sights. This is a place where you can actually slow down. 💡 For whom: If you've already done Suzhou and Hangzhou and want a new destination without a long commute. 7. 🛶 ZHUJIAJIAO • 朱家角 And here, you don't even need a high-speed train. Zhujiajiao is within the Shanghai municipality, in Qingpu, and is connected to the city by Metro Line 17. Official city materials confirm access via Zhujiajiao Station; from the Hongqiao transport hub, the journey to the ancient town takes about 40 minutes. Canals, boats, Fangsheng Bridge, old houses. But I would do one thing: arrive in the morning, walk through the central part, and then intentionally move away from the busiest streets. 💡 For whom: If you want the simplest possible trip without train stations or intercity trains. 📌 AND NOW THE MAIN THING: HOW THIS WORKS AS A SINGLE BASE For example, you have 8 nights in Shanghai. The Zhenqu Pavilion is magnificent, with a plaque personally inscribed by Emperor Qianlong that adds a touch of history. From the reflections at the Mid-lake Pavilion to the plum blossom window frames at Wenmei Pavilion, every detail is exquisite. Though the garden is compact, the scenery shifts with every step along winding paths. It’s a perfect blend of Zen and art, and every snapshot looks like a professional photo📸 It’s an ideal spot for family bonding or just relaxing in peace~ Spending the day photographing a little girl in the garden was magical—the sunlight dancing on the rocks created such a dreamy atmosphere! Strolling along the stone paths and soaking in the lush greenery is a truly healing experience🌞 Recommended visit: 1.5 to 3 hours. Spring and autumn are the best times to go🍂 Tickets are around 40 RMB during peak season and 30 RMB in the off-season. Be sure to book in advance! Getting there is easy: Take Metro Line 4 to Beisita Station (Exit 4) and walk for 15 minutes, or take Line 6 to Humble Administrator's Garden/Suzhou Museum Station and walk for 10 minutes. You can also take buses like Route 1, 2, or 301 to Lion Grove South or the Suzhou Museum stop🚌 While there is parking to the south, the old city streets are narrow, so public transport is highly recommended for a stress-free trip~ In short, Lion Grove is small but stunning. I've visited Shantang Street, Guanqian Street, and Pingjiang Road. In my opinion, Pingjiang Road is the most enjoyable to explore. It shares the same traditional, historic charm as Shantang Street, but it’s much more lively and bustling.

Yesterday in Suzhou, I thought I was just going out for dinner… Turns out, I accidentally time-traveled a few hundred years back. 😂 Right next to Pan Pacific Suzhou, I went to Wu Palace Imperial Banquet (吴宫御宴) — and it was way more fun than I expected. Trust me — your mouth will be busy eating, your eyes will be busy watching, your ears will be busy listening, and your hands? Too busy filming to put the phone down. 😂 The food was delicious, but honestly, the whole experience was the best part. Traditional costumes, music, performances, beautiful Chinese-style architecture… for a moment, you almost forgot where you were. 😆 That’s what I’m starting to love about Suzhou.
