Albania's famous hiking route "The Accursed Mountains" This is a must-visit and highly recommended spot if you're traveling to Albania✨ Enjoy the fresh air and immerse yourself in nature🍁⛰️ Route: Valbona → Theth Distance: Approximately 12km Duration: Around 7 hours including breaks I visited in late October 2024. Since it was the end of the season, I was worried there might be fewer hikers and colder weather, but that wasn't the case. Walking while enjoying the autumn foliage made me feel it was actually the best season. ⚠️ The cabins can get quite chilly in the mornings and evenings, so make sure to dress warmly!

Theth is the village at the centre of the Albania Alps, it is the perfect place to base yourself for a few days to explore the area. The best thing to do in Theth is hiking, there isn’t much to do in the town, so just keep this in mind if you plan on visiting. The village area is beautiful, stunning views of the Albanian Alps and gushing rivers abound. As well as viewing the church and lock in tower in Theth village we did a couple of excellent hikes to The Blue Eye, Grunasi waterfall and Canyon of Grunas which is spectacular. How to get to Theth from Shkoder: To get to Theth from Shkoder you will need to book a minivan. This minivan only leaves once a day at 7am, so it’s important to book it. There are multiple companies, but spots are limited. You can do this at your accommodation, or you can go to the bus station in Shkoder and try your luck for a bus with availability. It’s recommended to arrive around 6.30am to catch the 7am bus.

Personally, I found the flights a bit pricey, but the cost of living is so cheap that it makes the ticket totally worth it. The accommodations are great, and the food is delicious. We ate and lived like royalty on this trip 😂. I highly recommend doing a road trip since public transportation isn't very convenient. A road trip from North to South 😚✨️ taking in everything—beaches, mountains, and charming little towns 🩷 🌞 Days 1-2: Dhermi 🌞 Days 3-4: Sarande 🌞 Days 5-6: Ksamil (It was mostly closed when we went because it wasn't summer) 🌞 Days 7-8: Gjirokaster 🌞 Days 9-10: Berat 🌞 Days 11-12: Theth 🌞 Days 12-13: Tirana Splitting the gas and car rental comes out to around 40 Euros a day. Parking is easy to find and almost completely free. If I remember correctly, the total gas cost was under 12,000 THB.

It is a tiny village nestled within Theth National Park in the Albanian Alps, Albania. It's considered a popular destination for hikers thanks to its stunning natural beauty and numerous renowned attractions. For this trip, we rented a car and drove from North Macedonia, making a one-night stop in Shkodër to stock up on groceries since we arrived before the peak tourist season, and also to catch our breath after the long flight from Thailand. We visited in early April when the mountains were still blanketed in snow, including the SH21 road leading to the national park. This road is narrow and winding, so you have to drive with extreme caution. The further we drove up the mountain towards the park, the heavier the snow became. Seeing the car ahead of us stop and prepare to turn around made me quite nervous, but we pressed on. Eventually, we came across a car coming down and flagged the driver down to ask about the road conditions. They assured us it was passable but advised us to drive slowly and be very careful. I'm so glad we didn't give up and turn back, as the view of the snow-covered road and trees was absolutely breathtaking. As mentioned, we arrived during the off-season, so many guesthouses weren't open yet. We rang the doorbells at several places, but no one was around. We kept walking and searching; some places were open but were undergoing post-winter renovations. We finally found accommodation further inside the village. A group of tourists had checked in before us, which was great since it meant we wouldn't feel too isolated. After unpacking, it was time to explore the surroundings. It was already late in the afternoon. Originally, we planned to hike to the Blue Eye, a natural spring with crystal-clear water, but it requires a one-hour hike up the mountain and another hour back. Fearing we'd run out of daylight, we decided to skip it. Instead, we took a stroll to The Church of Theth. Built in 1892, this historic church is a significant cultural symbol of the region. Constructed from local stone, it is still an active place of worship today. Additionally, there's the Theth trail, which involves hiking across the Valbona Pass. It's an absolute must for hiking enthusiasts, though we unfortunately had to skip it due to a lack of time. I really hope we get the chance to return here someday!

Buses run frequently from the airport and city center, and the journey takes about 45 minutes. After settling in, I explored the promenade, the Roman Amphitheatre, and enjoyed fresh seafood by the harbor. Durrës has a relaxed vibe and is a perfect base for day trips. Day 2 – Day Trip to Theth & Snowy Albanian Alps I booked a tour through GetYourGuide to visit Theth in the Albanian Alps, and it was the highlight of the trip. The drive through the mountains was stunning, and Theth looked like a winter postcard—white snow, wooden houses, and complete peace. We visited the church, the famous Lock-in Tower, and enjoyed local food. It truly felt magical and well organized, so I highly recommend taking a guided tour if you don’t have a car. Day 3 – Berat & Back to Durrës In the morning I traveled by local transport to Berat, the “City of a Thousand Windows.” Such a charming and historic place with cobbled streets, Ottoman houses, and a beautiful castle overlooking the river. I stayed until sunset, then returned to Durrës by taxi since buses stop after around 5 PM. In the evening I relaxed at Durrës beach, enjoyed one last Albanian dinner, and the next day headed to Tirana Airport for my flight back to London. · -- ### Helpful Tips · Use cash – many small places don’t accept cards. · Not everyone speaks English, so politely ask first; a translator app helps a lot. · Don’t rely fully on Google Maps for buses—schedules change. Ask locals or your hotel. · Best option is to rent a car if you can; otherwise day tours are very convenient. Albania surprised me with its beauty, kindness, and affordability. It is split into two main parts - mountain views in the North with better than the Dolomites but with no crowds, and the South with the same waters as Greece but for one third the price. Albania is a true hidden gem in Europe with the friendliest people. I was only able to explore the North this trip but I am definitely heading back next time. A little information about traveling to Albania: ✨Food✨ One can easily get a full meal under 10 euros here. The food is very tasty with mainly influence from the Ottoman empire and Italy. Imagine food with the best of Turkey and Italian influence. Yum 😋 ✨Getting around✨ Driving is the most common way to get around Albania, with car rentals only being 15-25 Euros a day! I was not a very confident driver so I used public transport to get around which is much more possible now as Albania is starting to open up. If there is sufficient interest, I will post a guide to getting around Albania in public transport. ✨The people ✨ Hands down friendliest in Europe, and they are not at all racist to Asian people. Most in the tourist industry speaks English which is great. ✨Money✨ Probably the most annoying part in Albania. Bring plenty of Euro into the country and change it to Leks at the city. Withdrawing cash requires a large fee. It is rare to find Albanian Leks in your home country and the rates are good in Albania so just change t there. Although they do accept Euro, the rates are much better if you pay in Lek. Also, card is only commonly used in the capital only, so do not rely on it. ✨Safety✨ Most people are concerned about this but it is honestly the safest I felt in my multi-country europe trip. Just do not wear flashy items and have normal precaution. Theth in Albania is a great place to visit surrounded by tall mountains with bare peaks due to the winter snow which makes it a perfect place for those who love hiking, fresh air, and fresh food. Theth not only offers a great nature and stunning views of Northern Albania, however, it has a rich history regarding Albania and its traditional, especially the Lock-in Tower which today amazes tourists with the symbolism and and meaning it shares from the blood-revenge phenomenon point of view. This place kept alive many of those who took someone’s life lead by Albanian wise-elderly men to interfere in peace-making among the families involved in the blood-revenge phenomenon. Here the walls, including this building with the traditional Albania crib speak confess how hard it was for people to forgive and keep that promise of peace. Another amazing place to see is the church which once had been burnt, rebuilt again and has resisted many collisions including communism which shut down every church and mosque in Albania. Theth is a stunning place with amazing flora and fauna, an incredible landscape lead by the water, waterfalls and traditional families still living there. This place is like a fairy tale which people can experience and feel its beauty, take it along with them, and share it with family and friends.
