During my trip through New Zealand's South Island, I spent an entire day just driving between towns. Personally, I’ve always been drawn to quiet places away from the crowds, and this long stretch of road gave me a real sense of peace and comfort. We stayed overnight at a simple motel near the historic "Evelyn" church. The area was so incredibly quiet that it felt like being in the heart of the countryside, miles away from the city's hustle and bustle. While this kind of accommodation might not be for everyone—especially those who prefer luxury hotels—I found it perfect for gathering my thoughts. We also enjoyed a great dinner at a small restaurant there that serves stone-grilled meats. The next day, we kept going and passed through Invercargill. I noticed a beautiful historic building with a classic design and a metal fire escape on the outside; a restaurant called "The Oxford" was located at the bottom. Later, we stopped for lunch at a local spot called "Lone Star," a place known for its grilled food. They have a model of a World War II fighter plane at the entrance that really catches your eye from the highway. It was a long haul and definitely required some patience, but driving through those wide-open landscapes and quiet towns was such a pleasant and peaceful experience.

We didn’t expect Timaru to be such a great township- it looks new and modern as compared to Dunedin we just came from the night before- this town gives us a breath of fresh air👍🏼……and you get to see little blue penguin for free! 👍🏼✌🏻 we stayed at Aspen on King- TBH is the best motel we had stayed throughout our 7 days self drive trip. The owner manager was very informative and helpful. Becos of this hotel we were saying we shall visit Timaru again 👍🏼instead of staying at Lake Tekapo. We stayed in a three bedrooms apartment with three toilets 👍🏼

Today was a sunny day. We went hiking at Blue Lake and the Tasman Glacier. After parking at the foot of the mountain, we hiked to the high ground below the glacier, where we could see the snow-capped mountains and lakes in panoramic views. There are many hiking trails here. I heard you can also take a helicopter to the summit and then hike, and then take a helicopter back down. Alternatively, you can take a boat to the foot of the Tasman Glacier to see the floating ice on the lake. The sun shone brightly throughout the hike. Although the air temperature was only in the teens Celsius, it felt like midsummer. After descending from the high ground, we took another trail to the riverbank, offering a different perspective of the snow-capped mountains and glaciers from the lake. The lake water had a strong mineral taste; it seems undrinkable. Next to the glacier is Lake Pukaki. We walked along the lakeside road, and there was a lavender field nearby. The lavender fields weren't very large; you could see the edge of it at a glance. I heard the entrance fee used to be 5 yuan, but it's now 8 yuan per person. Most tourists just took a few photos outside the fence and left. The ice cream at the entrance, priced at 10 yuan each, was incredibly delicious—a strong lavender flavor with a generous amount of raspberry solids. I heard the salmon by the lake was worth trying, but when I found a place, it was closed today, probably due to the New Year. We continued our drive to our third stop—Lake Tekapo. It was raining at Lake Tekapo, sometimes heavy, sometimes light. Wearing my travel jacket, I walked along the lakeside in the light rain. The seagulls here weren't afraid of people, and the wild rabbits were quite plump. I was taking pictures of the Church of the Good Shepherd next door; it was hopping around beside me—a very harmonious scene. There's an observatory here, usually a stargazing spot, but with the rain today, stargazing was out of the question. Tonight we're staying in Timaru, about an hour's drive from Lake Tekapo. Our accommodation is very close to the beach. After dinner, as it got dark, we set off at 10 pm to watch the penguins return to their nests. There are penguin colonies at several spots, especially spot number 99, where the penguins will come right up to you and interact with you – it's really interesting! Going whale watching tomorrow! I especially enjoy the feeling of walking along the seaside, where fishing boats are docked in the harbor and the calm Caroline Bay lies in the distance. At first, I thought a terrifying horror movie would be staged. Unexpectedly, after learning about countless stories of working under the stars, it only makes people feel that this is a sacred place full of profoundness. It is a gift from God to be able to live here. It is a pity that it has faded with time. It used to be the residence of Canterbury pioneers, a school, and a seminary. My IQ didn’t grow, but my EQ did. Food is expensive, rent is high, but cars are cheap — I bought a 7-seater for just 50,000 THB. Life was simple — weekends were just supermarket runs, cooking, and movies. Timaru, a small town two hours from Christchurch, was where I stayed the longest. The best part was driving — beautiful, empty roads, snowcapped mountains, and stunning views in every season. Nature was truly magical. People here are super chill — barefoot, no umbrellas, no makeup, no judgments. I rarely felt discriminated against. Even 10°C felt normal with just a light jacket. Second-hand stuff is common here. The air is so fresh. I even saw the Southern Lights near home. My English improved a lot. I avoided Thai groups and worked with Kiwis and Asians like Malaysians, Taiwanese, Chinese, and Indians — who became like family. I’m lucky to have met friends who cooked for me, worked 12-hour shifts but still chatted endlessly. Even hearing Chinese daily made me pick up some words. And of course, my life partner — we met during my first working holiday year in 2019. A Malaysian. It wasn’t easy at first — different cultures, languages, and visa situations. But time, patience, and love brought us closer. I can’t imagine life without him. Now it’s time for another big move. These past 5 years felt like living a dream. We waited for the baby penguins to return from the sea in the cold night! They will probably return to their nests to sleep after the sun sets (around 8:30 to 9:00)! We were lucky and saw about 7 to 8 baby penguins! They are all so cute! 😍

In New Zealand, a place where even the lakes are extraordinarily grand, its endless sea is naturally even more anticipated. When visiting Timaru to see the sea, the map shows that Dashing Rock is a spot where seals often appear, and there is a vast beach adorned with colorful pebbles and shells for strolling. My friend and I drove to the vicinity and found that if you follow Google Maps' directions, you will be blocked by the gate of a slaughterhouse at the end. The correct way to enter is to park near the slaughterhouse and then walk. At the corner of Westcott St. and Pacific St., you will see a small path for pedestrians that bypasses the slaughterhouse and leads to Timaru's beach. The ocean suddenly unfolds at the end of the path, and the endless blue makes you gasp in awe. The waves at the horizon layer different shades of blue. The sea breeze blows, and the camera can't capture half of its beauty. On the right side of the beach, there are towering rocks, and the waves crashing against them create huge splashes. Climbing to the top of the rocks, the white waves surge beneath your feet. Fortunately, we even saw a lazy seal lying in a hollow. It seemed accustomed to the disturbance of tourists' cameras. As long as you don't get too close, it just lazily lifts its head for a glance and then continues to lie down, listening to the sound of the waves and the wind, and falls back into a peaceful sleep. Although you can see seals and there is no one guarding the area, tourists should remember to keep a proper distance from them and not disturb their daily lives. After all, as the Kiwis say, on this beach, they are the original inhabitants.

#cherryblossom2024 Trevor Griffiths Rose Garden is a garden with a collection of roses, located in Timaru, New Zealand. It is just beside the Caroline Bay Beach. According to the website, the park is spread over 10 acres and exhibits some of rarest and exquisite varieties of rose and is home to 1600 varieties of flowers. There is a small fountain pool and classical bronze figure forms the centerpiece. It would be nice to explore and stroll around the garden during spring to witness the roses bloom. My wife and I had a great time at the Caroline Beach Carnival at small town called Timaru in New Zealand. The weather was perfect, the atmosphere full of excitement and it was great to be out on the day.

The bay, framed by rolling hills and pristine waters, was a picturesque haven. As I navigated the winding roads, the landscape unfolded like a living canvas. The air was crisp with a hint of ocean breeze, and the azure sky mirrored the tranquil waters below. Each turn revealed a new facet of nature's beauty. Sunset at Caroline Bay was a mesmerizing spectacle, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. As I departed, the memories etched in that serene setting lingered. In 2024, I wish to go there again, to revisit the tranquility that Caroline Bay bestowed upon me.
