Must-visit places for budget travelers in November and December: These destinations are truly affordable.
01 Wanning City | Hainan
In November and December, the typhoon season in eastern Hainan is basically over. Daytime temperatures are in the mid-20s Celsius, and a light jacket is enough for the mornings and evenings. Take the high-speed rail to Wanning Station or Shenzhou Station, then take a taxi from outside the station to the bay area; this saves half the time compared to going via Sanya.
Shimei Bay is best visited in the morning. The trail along Qingpi Forest is shaded by trees, making it pleasant to walk in the sun. When there are fewer people on the beach, you can hear the waves drowning out conversations.
📍 The entrance to the bay area is next to the coastal tourist highway. If you're driving, you can park directly in the roadside parking lot. Free spaces are limited, so arrive early to secure a spot.
Riyue Bay offers a different experience. After 4 PM, the sunlight angles down, and surfboards are everywhere, creating a lively scene on the shore. If you want to learn to surf, the waves in November and December are beginner-friendly, and instructor lessons are significantly cheaper than during the Spring Festival. You can enjoy both the excitement and affordability on the same beach.
For food and lodging, head to the back street of Riyue Bay. Enjoy local specialties like Hou'an rice noodles, coconut rice, and Qingbuliang (a sweet dessert soup), a meal for around 20-30 yuan will fill you up. For accommodation, choose a guesthouse in the bay area; off-season prices for standard rooms are 60-70% of peak season prices. The downside is that there are few supermarkets nearby, so bring your own water and snacks.
⚠️ When booking beach activities, clarify whether equipment is included in the price quote; don't just look at the listed price.
02 Zhaoqing City | Guangdong
November and December are the perfect time to visit Zhaoqing. Daytime temperatures are around 20 degrees Celsius, and the bald cypress trees along Xinghu Lake begin to turn from green to red, changing color daily. Take the high-speed rail to Zhaoqing East Station, then transfer to a bus or taxi to get into the city; it takes about 20 minutes.
The heart of Xinghu Lake is the Seven Star Crags. The combination of rock formations and the lake is best explored by walking along the greenway rather than taking a boat.
⏰ Enter the park before 9 am for fewer crowds and softer lighting, making it easier to take blurry photos of the lake reflections. The lakeside greenway is about 20 kilometers long; just choose a section to walk. The scenery is most concentrated from the archway square towards Yanqian Village.
Entrance fees and boat tickets are separate. ⚠️ If you only want to walk the greenway and see the lake, you don't need to buy the full package; buying individual tickets as needed is more cost-effective. The row of lakeside shops in Yanqian Village offers 🍜 steamed rice dumplings and mountain spring tofu pudding; sit down to rest and watch the sunset.
Staying in the old town of Duanzhou District allows you to walk to the lake and take an evening stroll along the embankment. It's cool in the mornings and evenings in November and December, so bring a jacket. Suitable for a slow-paced trip with elderly people and children; the greenway is gentle, and strollers can manage.
03 Shannan City | Tibet
November and December at Yamdrok Lake offer a different kind of tranquility. The Gangbala Pass is windy, so don't skimp on hats, scarves, and gloves. The lake surface is a deep, rich blue, and the snow line is low.
⚠️ For high-altitude sections, avoid staying up late the night before. Walk slowly uphill; if you get a headache, descend immediately and don't push yourself.
A day trip from Lhasa is the most convenient option. Hire a car or share a ride along the 318 National Highway and then the provincial highway. Leave the city before 7 AM to reach the viewpoint before tour groups.
📍 Parking is charged at the mountain pass viewpoint. A short walk downhill offers a free viewpoint, but the road is narrow, so be careful of oncoming traffic.
⏰ The light is best between midday and 2 PM, resulting in the most vibrant lake colors. November and December are the off-season, with some winter travel ticket discounts available during certain periods; please refer to official announcements for details. Dining options are limited along the way, so bring your own hot water and snacks.
Accommodation is more stable when returning to Lhasa. Shannan city is at a slightly lower altitude, but options are limited. This is suitable for travelers who can tolerate the risk of altitude sickness and enjoy panoramic views; it's not suitable for young children or those with heart or lung conditions. The advantage is lower car and hotel prices during the off-season, and sharing a ride can reduce the average cost per person.
04 Pingliang City | Gansu
Kongtong Mountain enters its off-season in November and December, with fewer crowds, easier access to tickets, and no waiting for photos. The larch and broad-leaved forests on the mountain turn a yellowish-brown, and after a light snowfall, the stone steps and pine branches are covered in white, creating a unique and layered effect.
⚠️ There are many steep steps; wear non-slip shoes. Avoid walking on unpaved paths after rain or snow.
🚄 Get off at Pingliang Station, take a taxi to Kongtong Ancient Town (about 20 minutes), and then take the scenic shuttle bus up the mountain. Ascend in the morning and descend before 3 PM, as it gets dark early in the mountains, and the temperature difference can be over ten degrees Celsius.
The Zhongtai area offers expansive views; follow the path towards the Pagoda Courtyard and the Imperial City. If you're not physically fit, take the cable car to save half the walking; prices are subject to on-site announcements.
🍜 After descending the mountain, head back to the city for a bowl of Pingliang mutton soup with hele noodles—a satisfying meal for around 20 yuan.
For accommodation, choose the city center; standard rooms can be found for around 100 yuan in the off-season, which is more affordable than staying on the mountain. The scenic area's opening hours are shortened in November and December, so check the daily announcement before you set off. Suitable for hikers who enjoy climbing and can tolerate cold winds.
05 Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Qinghai
It gets quite cold by Qinghai Lake in November and December, and the wind is even more pronounced at the Riyue Mountain pass. Bring down jackets, windproof coats, and gloves.
⚠️ At an altitude of around 3,000 meters, avoid strenuous running and jumping; walk slowly.
Riyue Mountain offers views of the golden yellow of the mountain pass and grasslands. The Riting and Yueting pavilions are located on opposite sides. 📍 The wind is strongest at the prayer flag area near the pass, so don't loosen your scarf. In the morning, the sunlight is oblique, making the grass slopes clearly visible; in the afternoon, the cloud shadows create a more layered effect. Ticket prices are lower during the off-season; please refer to the official announcement on the day for specific details.
Guide National Geopark offers a different kind of scenery, with Danxia cliffs against the backdrop of the Yellow River's clear waters. There are fewer tourists in November and December, allowing for a leisurely stroll along the boardwalks. The Ashigong Colorful Peaks are the main attraction; a two-hour loop is sufficient. Driving from Xining, Riyue Mountain and Guide can be combined into a day trip, though the journey is not short, so start early.
Eat and stay in Guide County. Enjoy local delicacies like hand-pulled mutton and "ga mian pian" (a type of noodle dish), costing around 40-50 yuan per person. Hotel prices are lower during the off-season, but some restaurants close early. Suitable for those who can drive and tolerate the cold, but not for beginners who are sensitive to wind and dryness.
06 Tonghua City | Jilin
Tonghua in November and December is already winter. The small town of Ji'an on the Yalu River is quiet and cold, with daytime temperatures around freezing. Down jackets and fleece trousers are essential.
🚄 Transfer at Tonghua Station to Ji'an, or take a direct train to Ji'an Station. The county town is small; a taxi ride for the starting fare will take you to most places.
The Goguryeo relics and historical sites are scattered around Ji'an. The Gwanggaeto Stele, General's Tomb, and Wandu Mountain City are several sites to visit separately. 📍 It's recommended to get a map from the visitor center in the city first, then arrange them in order of distance. The morning light is better, allowing you to clearly see the inscriptions and stone details; it gets dark in the mountains after 4 PM.
The rapeseed flower fields of Ji'an are a spring spectacle. November and December are not the flowering season, so don't plan your itinerary based on the flowering season. Instead, focus on enjoying the vastness of the riverbank in late autumn and early winter and the mountain scenery on the opposite bank.
⚠️ Some rural roads are icy in winter; use snow tires if driving.
Eating cold noodles and barbecue in the town costs around 30-40 RMB per person. Choose accommodation in the town center; prices are lower during the off-season. This is suitable for those who enjoy historical sites and the atmosphere of a border town. If you're sensitive to the cold, shorten your trip.
07 Guyuan City | Ningxia
November and December are the absolute off-season for the Xumishan Grottoes. You'll see very few tourists each day, allowing guides to give a leisurely explanation.
⚠️ It's windy on the mountain, so wear a hat and scarf. Do not use flash photography inside the grottoes.
📍 The grottoes are scattered across several mountain ridges. The Tang Dynasty Buddha statue in the main area's Great Buddha Hall is the most worthwhile to stand and admire. The steps are steep, so walk carefully. In the morning and midday, the sunlight shines through the eaves, making the statues' outlines clear; in the afternoon, the light is backlit, making it difficult to see details.
🚄 It takes about an hour by taxi from Guyuan Station. Buses are infrequent, so driving or hiring a car will save time. Tickets are cheaper in the off-season; check the official announcement for the day. There aren't many places to eat around the grottoes, so bring your own water and snacks.
Back in Guyuan city, a standard room costs just over 100 yuan in the off-season. For dinner, we had mutton noodles and stewed snacks—a warm and comforting meal. Suitable for those interested in grottoes and Silk Road relics, not suitable for those just looking for photo opportunities.
08 Handan City | Hebei Province
In November and December, the autumn harvest is over on the Handan Plain, the sky is high and the wind is dry, and both Guangfu Ancient City and Wa Huang Palace are in their off-season, with fewer people and easier access to tickets. Get off at Handan East Station; it's about a 40-minute taxi ride to Guangfu Ancient City. Wa Huang Palace in Shexian County is further away, so it's recommended to split the trip into two days.
Guangfu Ancient City is a water-based city. Walking around the city wall takes over an hour. 📍 Climb the wall from the East Gate, walk along the wall to the South Gate, and you'll have a panoramic view of the moat and reed beds. In the evening, the low light makes the city walls and water appear as a picturesque scene. Dining in the city...
