Inside: ~30 relocated buildings from Edo to Showa—a shitamachi merchant row, a 1920s dentist’s office, the Takei Sanseido bookstore Ghibli sketched from, and the De Lalande Western residence. The loop I follow: enter at the Showa street → dentist → bathhouse façade → Sanseido → climb to the hill residences → end at the rest house for vending-machine coffee (IC works). I spent 2h40 on a Thursday morning in April; only 20 other visitors. The light through the latticed windows of the 1900 merchant house is the moment. Cash for the bus if you use a non-IC segment, but IC covers most. Bring a hat—August is brutal between buildings, almost no shade. Mistake: assuming “open-air” means casual footwear. The bathhouse step and the hill path are uneven; fashion sneakers hurt by hour two. Slow-travel prompt: is a building moved from its original plot still “Edo,” or is it now a 1990s museum object wearing Edo clothes? The museum refuses to answer—which is why it is worth the bus ride.

It is a small city in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. There is nothing fun to do outside the station. There is only Seibu Supermarket, which is open until 11 o'clock. It is really kind. I ate rice bowl at Matsuya next door and bought strawberries to enjoy at the hotel.

The first stop on every business trip. I don’t like to eat in restaurants, but I love going to the supermarket to look at bento boxes, fruits, vegetables, snacks, drinks, snacks, and snacks. It’s really satisfying.
