Murō-ji Temple Five-Storied Pagoda

We went to "Uda Yakuyu no Yado Yatakiya," a traditional storehouse inn nestled in the mountains of Nara 🚪 With a limited number of guests, it felt like we had the place all to ourselves, offering a truly peaceful atmosphere ✨ The best part was soaking in the medicinal bath in the ceramic bathtub ♨️ It warmed us right to the core. Dinner was a full course meal featuring local Nara vegetables, and we were completely satisfied 🍽️ Breakfast was also full of the proprietress's dedication and had a gentle, wholesome taste. I visited Muro-ji Temple 😊 Fondly known as the "Women's Koyasan," this historic temple boasts a tranquil atmosphere surrounded by lush nature. In May, vibrant fresh greenery blankets the temple grounds, and brilliant rhododendrons bloom in full glory, offering a stunning springtime view ✨ The harmonious blend of nature with the historic five-storied pagoda and main hall is truly elegant, making it the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing, healing stroll 📸 If you're driving, there are plenty of other temples nearby, so I highly recommend exploring them together! Offering beautiful and unique views throughout the four seasons, this is a highly recommended spot for anyone sightseeing in Nara or doing a temple tour. 📍Access 🚃 Approx. 15 minutes by bus from Kintetsu Muroguchi-Ono Station, get off at Muro-ji Temple, then a 5-minute walk

The sizzling sound of frying radish cakes mingled with the aroma of scallions wafted from the street corner vendor's stove as he set up his stove. The crispy, savory flavor was always appetizing. The vendor ladled the mixed radish batter into a pan, pressed it into a round shape with a spatula, and fried it until golden brown on both sides. The crispy edges glistened in the sunlight, and each bite was exceptionally crunchy, revealing the tender radish inside. The aroma of scallions slowly spread in the mouth. Next to him, a clay pot simmered with savory soy milk. The bottom of the bowl was lined with soy sauce, vinegar, and seaweed. When hot soy milk was poured over it, it instantly solidified into a crunchy consistency. Topped with fried dough sticks and scallions, the rustling sound as it was stirred was incredibly soothing. Beside the cashier, a bamboo basket held freshly steamed shumai, their thin skin revealing tender pink shrimp inside. Some people dipped them in vinegar and ginger, the sweet and savory flavor making it hard to resist eating a few more. This casual way of eating by the roadside, without fancy tableware, brings the most genuine joy. It turns out that the true deliciousness of travel isn't in the dining environment, but in the feeling of being immersed in the local atmosphere. Located near a mountain known as Yamato-Fuji, we had the place completely to ourselves in the morning. Enjoy the pristine water mirror creating a flawless natural reflection. In Nara, when you hear "Matabei," the famous "Matabei Cherry Tree" (Hongo no Takizakura), a weeping cherry tree over 300 years old located in Uda City, is the first thing that comes to mind. It's named after the Sengoku period warlord Goto Matabei, as it stands on the site of his former residence, where he is said to have fled and spent the rest of his life as a monk. The sight of the pale pink petals cascading down like a waterfall from the 13-meter-tall tree is breathtaking. The contrast with the peach blossoms in the background is also beautiful, and now is truly the best season to visit. Founded approximately 1,200 years ago, Muroji Temple, also known as "Women's Koyasan," is holding its Autumn Leaves Festival starting October 18th. 🍁 Perhaps this weekend will be the best time to see the leaves? A highlight during the day is the special viewing of the National Treasure Kondo Hall. The thatched-roof Kondo Hall was built in the early Heian period and now features a hanging prayer hall at the front, added during the Edo period. The central image inside the hall is a standing statue of Shaka Nyorai (National Treasure), made from a single piece of Kaya wood and crafted in the early Heian period, featuring the distinctive Muroji-style robe pattern. 🌊 It appears that the statue was originally carved as Yakushi Nyorai, and perhaps for this reason, it also houses the Twelve Heavenly Generals (Important Cultural Property, Kamakura), who are Yakushi Nyorai's attendants. Currently, six are housed in each of the Treasure Halls. Additionally, you can view the Heian-period standing statues of Yakushi Nyorai and Manjusri Bodhisattva (both Important Cultural Properties) from the outer sanctuary, believed to have been moved from other temples in the mid-Edo period. 😌 Starting in November, the temple will be illuminated at night, with autumn foliage and the temple grounds lit up on weekends and holidays only!
