2026 Uttarkashi Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in August)

After my yoga teacher training in India, my teacher invited me to join his Dodital trek in the Himalaya, which I will share in my next post. After the trek, I had a great time in Uttarkashi, India. I experienced water activities, such as kayaking, speedboat, and swimming in the Ganga! I went to the market and the temple and experienced the most authentic life of the locals. Here I will share the cost-efficient way of traveling in Uttarkashi and my life in Uttarkashi🏔️ 🚐🚞✈️Transportation From Rishikesh to Uttarkashi: The main transportation there is bus, which takes place at the main market there. I took a 6-hour bus from Rishikesh to Uttarkashi. The price is around 400 rupees. From Uttarkashi to Delhi: My flight back home is in Delhi. Since I really want to experience taking a train in India, I chose the way that took the longest time to get there. However, it’s the cheapest and most fun. First, take a bus from Uttarkashi to Hardiwar (400 rupees, 6 hours) Then, take a train from Hardiwar to Delhi (100 rupees, 6 hours, sleeper class without seat; you can choose a higher price for the seat, and there are different classes of the train) 📍Sites to visit · Shree Kashi Vishwanath Temple · Shakti Temple · Hanuman Temple These three are all in the same areas. You can get around by walking. If you are interested in Hindu mythology and religion, going to the temple will always bring you joy and good energy. · Kaleshwar Mahadev Temple It is a smaller temple residing in a more tranquil place. Along the way there, you can see chapati seeds growing, which makes beautiful views. · Uttarkashi Main Market This is where the locals gather. You can find all kinds of Indian cuisine here. There are stores that sell Indian traditional attires and beautiful sarees. A temple and shiva statue is beside the Ganga River at the market. 🌊🚣Water sports at Cafe on the Waves They not only provide all kinds of food from Indian meal to western food but also have water sports, like kayaking, speedboats, and so forth. The price is so affordable only 200 rupees. What could be the most exciting thing of hiking during summer ? I would say going to a cold place and get to see some snowy 🏔️ mountains. Along with that if you get a chance to see some vibrant base camp sites 🎪 why not !! After landing on Dehradun, we took a car straight to Sankri (a quite long journey though) and reached the starting point of our hike. With all the hiking materials check list being ticked and confirmed; our journey started 🥾 hiking towards the Kedarkantha base camp site which took around 4 hours to reach. Here you can see so amazing vibrant tents 🏕 raised amidst the white snow; that gives a complete festive mood. We had a fun evening party and then continued our journey to the summit the next day. This is one of the most beautiful base camp sites I've been part of. This whole story is deeply religious and closed to non-believers. But with the untouchables, there are options for contractual and monetary relations. You just need to observe etiquette and engage in the game without irony, with respect. We didn't know the rules of the game. We read them later and felt like we'd walked a fine line somewhere. How did we do it? I don't know. By touch and with Vishnu's help, no doubt. And I also think my gaze takes on a reverent, feeble-mindedness in such places, and such people are revered and given the green light in any religion. You have to walk through the city's labyrinthine paths to get to the ghat, and they're quite safe. The only risk is breaking your legs on the steps. The people are kind. There are no beggars. But as soon as we reached the right place, one of the people sitting on the steps asked us to leave. He calmly and politely pointed to the direction tourists were allowed to go. Then another participant in the performance pointed out to us that we weren't allowed there. We didn't know it was part of a performance being staged for us, with very expensive tickets. A story about how feeblemindedness and courage led us to mass funerals and dens of illegal substances... Everyone knows that Varanasi is a place where up to 300 cremations take place a day. These guys burn around the clock. On the very first day, we took a boat to see the lights against the backdrop of the architecture from the river. And we saw two, maximum. There wasn't even the smell they'd scared me about. Concluding that we'd fallen for the marketing hype and hadn't come to an authentic place, we were saddened 😄 And all the subsequent skepticism led us to where it did. On our last evening, we went not to the popular Assi Ghat (where they only burn candles), but to Manikarnika Ghat. Honestly, if I'd done my research thoroughly, nothing would have worked out. So read only if you don't plan on repeating 😄😄😄 Point 1. This is a crematorium and a place of strict religious worship. Families of the untouchable caste live here (they really exist), and they are the Kings of this place. These aren't pathetic, downtrodden guys in rotten rags. These are the ones without whom no Hindu can go to the Almighty. Because they are the ones who guard the fire of Vishnu, which has burned in the tower for 3,000 years without dying out. Only from this fire can one light the very pyre that will break the chain of reincarnation. And only they can perform the cremation rite. Fight with these guys—that's it. This is a coin-flipping decision reflecting how my intuition aligns with the consciousness of the universe. After my yoga teacher training in India, the teacher asked me if I wanted to climb the Himalaya mountain. My flight was originally in the south, and to be honest, my body was quite exhausted from the training, so I was indecisive. However, deep down I really wanted to join this trip to the north and felt like the universe would lead me to Himalaya. I shouted, “Flip the coin!” Within a second, I was jumping cheerfully and shouting, “I’m gonna go to Himalaya!!!” 🗓️Itinerary Scheduling 🏔️Day 1: Take a bus to Agoda, begin the hike, and reach Dodital Lake in the evening, where the camping site is. ⛄️Day 2: Pooja at the Shri Ganesh Temple in the morning. Hike up north to see the snow! Return back for nice dinner. Every day in the morning, the Ganesha temple will perform chanting. I like to go there and receive my blessing and meditate by the river in the morning. 🥰Day 3: Return to Agoda. Enjoy the nice homestay and gathering with friends. 🏡🏕️Accomodation 🏡 Bharat Homestay (The Native Himalayan) in the village of Agoda They provide cozy rooms and nutritional meals to prepare us with the energy for our trekking. The Kedarkantha trek is undoubtedly one of the best winter treks in India. Organized by Trek the Himalayas, the journey was a perfect blend of adventure and serenity.
