When it comes to the easiest way to visit Gediminas Castle Tower in Vilnius, there is one invention that deserves a round of applause: The funicular. Because while hiking up a hill may be good for your health, riding up comfortably while enjoying the view is good for your happiness. The funicular offers a round-trip ticket for around €3, making it one of the most affordable shortcuts you'll find in Europe. For those who enjoy exercise and early mornings, the hill can also be climbed on foot from around 7:00 AM. My brother and I briefly considered that option. Very briefly. Then we remembered the existence of the funicular. Problem solved. As luck would have it, we arrived at the station at exactly 10:00 AM, just as it started operating for the day. The timing couldn't have been better. There were no crowds, no queues, and we became some of the first passengers heading up the hill that morning. For once, we weren't following the tourists. We were the tourists being followed. The ride itself was short but enjoyable, offering increasingly beautiful views as the city slowly unfolded below us. Everything was spotless and well maintained, and before long we arrived at one of Vilnius' most iconic landmarks. Gediminas Castle Tower is all that remains of the Upper Castle, which once formed part of a larger defensive complex overlooking the city. Named after Grand Duke Gediminas, the founder of Vilnius, the tower has become one of Lithuania's most recognizable national symbols. Its image even appears on Lithuanian souvenirs, postcards, coins, and probably every second refrigerator magnet in the city. We didn't go inside the tower itself during our visit, although visitors holding certain city passes can usually enter the museum section without additional charge. Honestly, the views alone were worth the trip. Standing on the hilltop, we could admire the beautiful contrast that makes Vilnius so fascinating. On one side lay the historic Old Town, with its church spires, red rooftops, and centuries of history. After standing there for a while and taking far too many photos, it became easy to understand why Gediminas Castle Tower remains one of the defining symbols of Vilnius. The location is excellent, right in the Old Town, with everything within easy walking distance.
