Although the official website offers packages, my friends and I calculated that following their suggested route and booking everything ourselves would be cheaper. So, we decided to go for a DIY trip. After completing the journey, we found it quite manageable (in terms of preparation, navigation, etc.), so it’s definitely worth considering. While some people manage to visit all these places in just one or two days, we preferred a more relaxed pace, spreading it out over four days and three nights. Slowing down really made the trip more enjoyable. The train even stops for a close-up view of a waterfall.) flam → gudvangen: cruise (Traveling through the fjords—absolutely stunning!) gudvangen → voss: bus (You can find the bus stop on Google Maps. Just hop on and pay with your card.) voss → bergen: train bergen → oslo: train Total transportation costs: approximately $2000-$2100. Accommodation: flam: Flåm Youth Hostel (good) voss: Scandic Voss (Highly recommended! Super convenient, right next to the train station, and the breakfast is delicious.) bergen: Citybox (good) Additional Information: 1. Voss has a cable car (Voss Gondol). Unfortunately, we didn’t do much research beforehand and found out it closes at 3 or 3:30 PM and opens at 9 AM the next day. We arrived too late and didn’t want to wake up early the next morning, so we missed it. There’s a swing at the top that looks pretty fun. 2. Bergen also has a cable car (Fløyen). It’s reasonably priced, around 200 NOK or less. While there isn’t much to explore at the top, the view is great—you can overlook the entire city. Definitely worth a visit! Many locals use this area for hiking. If you don’t want to pay for the cable car, you can hike up, but it will take longer. 3. Norwegian restaurants are honestly not recommended. Even for someone with low expectations for food, I found them overpriced and not tasty. One meal is enough for the experience. Instead, I recommend visiting local supermarkets, where you can find affordable and delicious salmon sashimi—highly recommended. 4. Weather significantly impacts the scenery and overall experience. Different weather conditions create different atmospheres, but if you’re particular about it, check the forecast before heading out (though weather can be unpredictable). The standard double room at Scandic Voss is not very large, only 19 square meters, with just a shower and no bathtub. #Cable car The Voss cable car station is on the other side of the train station. Just follow the signs along the way. The cable car will only open until 5:00pm. It is not recommended to go there after 4:00pm as the staff may close it early. Taking the cable car to overlook the Vangsvatnet Lake is amazing, it is really beautiful. As the car slowly goes up, the scenery becomes more and more open. You can see the whole picture of Voss, just like a painting. #tripcom5th Anniversary Oppheimsee is a lake located in the north of Voss, Westland County, Norway, about 3 km east of Venijen. The lake covers an area of ​​3.55 square kilometers. European highway E16 runs along the north side of the lake, passing by Opheim Church in the small village of Opheim, from which the lake gets its name. "Norway in a Nutshell" is a classic route that many consider a once-in-a-lifetime must-do, and we finally welcomed the most anticipated day of our entire Nordic trip. At 7:00 AM, the sky was still a pale, grayish blue. After breakfast, we wheeled our luggage into Oslo Central Station to catch the train to Myrdal. On the platform, people waited quietly. There were no massive crowds, no urgent overhead announcements—just the sound of the train gliding to a halt right on schedule. As the train pulled out of Oslo, the scenery outside our window began to shift. The flat cityscape was soon replaced by dense forests, followed by expanses of frozen lakes. The further west we traveled, the higher the elevation climbed, and the thicker the snow became. Soon, the entire world was reduced to dark pine trees, pristine snowfields, and the occasional red wooden cabin. Those pops of bright red were particularly striking against the pure white backdrop, creating a scene that felt quintessentially Norwegian. Along the way, I could hardly bear to blink. Because every passing minute framed a completely different picture outside the window. The train descended steadily through the valley. In just one short hour, we transitioned from a snow-blanketed wonderland to a small village tucked beside a fjord. The most unforgettable moment of the ride was the Kjosfossen waterfall. The train made a special stop for several minutes, allowing all passengers to step out onto the viewing platform. The massive falls roared down the cliffside, the deafening sound echoing through the valley as icy mist sprayed our faces. Just as everyone was busy snapping photos, ethereal music drifted from the mountainside, and a woman in a red dress appeared near the rushing water, dancing gracefully. She was Huldra—a forest spirit from Norse mythology. This brief, enchanting performance added a layer of mystical allure to the snowy mountains. When the train chugged forward again, people kept looking back, half-hoping the spirit would reappear. In the afternoon, we arrived in Flåm. This tiny village of just a few hundred residents sits snugly beside Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the Sognefjord, which is the longest and deepest fjord in the world. No skyscrapers. No traffic. Just snowy peaks, the fjord, and small boats quietly bobbing in the harbor. The village was so peaceful that the only sound was the gentle lapping of waves against the shore. Instead of rushing to our next stop, we took our time strolling by the harbor. As the sun began to dip below the horizon, the train wove through forests and past glassy lakes. Bathed in the warm yellow glow of the streetlamps, the timber structures made it feel as though we’d stepped straight into a medieval Hanseatic port. After two days of trains, ferries, buses, and railways, we had finally completed what is widely celebrated as the most beautiful journey in the world.
