On our last day in York, we stumbled upon this hidden gem that had been right under our noses all along. Even if you aren't religious, it's definitely worth visiting as it provides fascinating insight into York's historical significance. What truly makes this place unique is the remarkable story associated with it, one that many, including myself, might be unaware of. Adding to its charm, it's still an active religious site where nuns live and work, making it even more special to experience.

Another amazing day at Mission Out with my bestie, the in-laws, and five kids ages 8–12! 🙌 At just £8.45 per person, it’s unbeatable value, and you can even bring your own picnic. A couple of the kids tried the high ropes for an extra £5.25, which you can book and pay for on the day. I’d suggest doing those early since the queues get long—especially if, like two of ours, they need a few tries on the low-level practice area! 😂 The staff were wonderful, super patient and encouraging, even with the lines. My only recommendation would be to have staff in the den-making area, as it got a bit chaotic and competitive—almost like a turf war with sticks being misused! 😂 Overall, it was another fantastic and affordable day out that the kids absolutely adored! ❤️

I am in Wakefield station

Absolutely amazing day out today at Misson Out! £36 for 2 adults and a child—this price included 2 for the high ropes! Incredible value for such a high-quality day out. We arrived at 10:15am and left at 4pm. Activities included High Ropes, Water Rafts, Tower Jump, Golf, Obstacles, Giant Swings, Den Building, Water Fountains, and a Sand Pit. You need the entire day to do it all, so I’m glad we got the day pass. The menu was limited, but the food was delicious! The staff were encouraging, helpful, and friendly throughout. However, one downside was a staff member leaving the water raft area unattended around 3pm to chat with other male staff at the Tower Jump, which left my mum and daughter struggling. However, the woman on duty earlier in the day was absolutely amazing—my daughter found her hilarious. The toilets were clean, which is rare in places like this, so kudos to the cleaners! And a massive thank you to all the park staff for working in 30+ degrees heat today—you are true heroes without capes. Thanks for creating memories we’ll treasure and for encouraging me to brave the Tower Jump. Totally worth the money!

This museum, named after Barbara Hepworth, a leading 20th-century British modernist sculptor who was born right here in Wakefield, is definitely a must-visit. Her work, known for its clean lines, fluid motion, and emphasis on integrating sculpture with nature, beautifully expresses the harmony between people and their environment. Apparently, along with Henry Moore, she really pioneered British modernist sculpture. What I Saw: When I visited, the museum was also showcasing several compelling exhibitions: Forbidden Territory: Celebrating 100 Years of Surrealism 🎨 This exhibition marked the centenary of the Surrealist Manifesto and featured iconic works by artists like Salvador Dalí and René Magritte. I heard this exhibit runs until April 21, 2025. Louise Giovanelli: A Song of Ascents This one also runs until April 21, 2025. Still Lives I saw this was on display until February 23, 2025. Day 1: Echoes of Art and Industry Take a train from London early in the morning and arrive in Wakefield, West Yorkshire in about two hours. This underrated city, known for its art, historical sites and tranquil natural scenery, is the perfect destination to escape the hustle and bustle. 1. Yorkshire Sculpture Park The first stop is the Yorkshire Sculpture Park on the outskirts of the city. This 500-acre outdoor art space seamlessly blends natural landscapes with modern sculptures. Works by Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth are scattered among the meadows and woods, with sunlight filtering through the clouds onto the bronze sculptures, giving them breath. While strolling, I came across a group of students sketching. The interaction between art and nature was particularly vivid here. 2. National Coal Mining Museum In the afternoon, visit the National Coal Mine Museum, which is a witness to the British Industrial Revolution. Put on a miner's helmet and follow your guide 140 meters underground to experience the working environment of miners in the 19th century. With only a headlamp to illuminate the darkness, the miners’ stories told by our guide were awe-inspiring. The museum also preserves complete miners' dormitories and steam locomotives, exuding a sense of history. Dinner recommendation: The Black Horse Hotel Restaurant, a traditional pub in the old district of the city center. Try Yorkshire pudding with beef stew. The local beer "Wakefield Ale" is mellow and slightly bitter, which is perfect for dispelling the cold. Day 2: Historical Sites and City Walk 3. Sandal Castle In the morning, ascend to the ruins of Sandor Castle, a 12th-century castle famous for its battles during the Wars of the Roses. Standing among the ruins and overlooking the panoramic view of Wakefield, the city is looming in the morning mist, and the heavy sense of history and the tranquility of nature are intertwined here. 4. The Hepworth Wakefield In the afternoon, head to the Hepworth Gallery, a modern, angular building named after local artist Barbara Hepworth. Her plaster prototypes and abstract sculptures are exhibited in the museum. It happened that the organ was being played, and the solemn music echoed under the dome, taking one's breath away. Day 3: Healing in Nature and the Countryside 6. Angler's Country Park On the last day, we chose the Anglers Country Park in the suburbs. The trails surrounding the lake and wetlands are suitable for cycling or jogging, and you may occasionally see flocks of swans skimming across the water. The bird watching lodge in the park is a hidden treasure where you can observe loons and kingfishers through binoculars and feel the vitality of nature. 7. Local markets and shopping Before returning, we visited Wakefield Market, where stalls were filled with artisan cheeses, baked treats and vintage crafts. I found a second-hand illustrated book and the shop owner enthusiastically recommended the nearby independent coffee shop "The Coffee House", whose "Sea Salt Caramel Latte" is absolutely amazing.

In addition to London, I also visited Cambridge and Leeds in the UK. Even though I only had one day in Yorkshire, I made a special trip to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. This sculpture park is a place I've always cherished, having frequented it during my studies. It's an art gallery in nature, where the sky and grass are the exhibition halls, the lake is the frame, and the sunlight and wind are the "guides" whispering in your ears. Located on the outskirts of Wakefield, near Leeds, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park covers approximately 500 acres and houses a collection of sculptures by artists from Britain and around the world, including Yorkshire-born Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, as well as Damien Hirst. This sculpture park, now comparable to London's Tate Modern in the field of sculpture art, originated from a DIY project. In 1970, the current director, Peter Murray, attended an art course at Bretton Hall College, which was established after World War I. It was then that he conceived the idea of placing sculptures in a natural landscape. With £1,000 in funding, he and his friends founded the park. Initially, the sculpture park faced pressure from various quarters, accused of disrupting the natural pastoral environment. Today, the sculpture park enjoys international acclaim, hosting world-class exhibitions and repeatedly winning the UK Museum of the Year award.

Decided to escape Edinburgh for the weekend and ended up at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Honestly, 500 acres of rolling hills, lakes, and massive art pieces just sitting in the wild. 🌳✨ I spent half the time pretending to deeply understand the contemporary sculptures and the other half trying to make friends with the local sheep (spoiler: they were not interested in me at all 🐑). It’s so lovely just wandering through the woods and stumbling upon these huge installations. Of course, being a barista, I had to scout out the food situation first. Grabbed a cheeky flat white and a slice of cake at their cafe before heading into the indoor galleries. Not a bad brew at all! ☕️🍰 Such a wholesome vibe with families, dogs, and cute elderly couples just strolling around. My legs are absolutely dead from all the walking, but it was so worth it! 🙌

Fly somewhere far away, and here is on our doorstep so many beautiful places. I looked at Cbh Waterton Park Hotel and Spa in Wakefield. That destination can lead to many delightful discoveries if to give to it a few days. and be open to having time to walk some paths in the area!
