Washington County travel guide and discussion

I entered Olympic NP at the Heart o’ the Hills gate ($30 per vehicle, 7-day pass, card ok) and drove 17 mi up to Hurricane Ridge—20°C in Port Angeles, 7°C and 40 km/h wind at the 1,600 m visitor center. The Ridge trail to Hurricane Hill is 3.2 mi round trip, paved then gravel, with Olympic goat sightings and a 360° on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Then I backtracked down to Lake Crescent (40 min drive), parked at Storm King Ranger Station (free with NP pass), and walked the 1.8 mi Marymere Falls trail through mossy fir to a 30 m waterfall, then sat on the lakeshore: water so clear it reads as cobalt glass, fed by no surface streams. Mistake: I tried to do both Ridge and a kayak on Crescent in one day—drove back to Ridge at 4 pm and hit fog that erased the peaks. Ridge is a morning asset; Crescent is an afternoon calm. Another mistake: assuming the lake has a swim beach—it’s 50 m deep and 4°C, no wading. Food: bring it; the Lake Crescent Lodge café closes at 4 pm and is $14 for a burger. Worth it? Yes—$30 covers subalpine meadow and glacial lake in one loop, which Zion or Banff can’t match per dollar. But the Ridge road closes in heavy snow Nov–May, so summer/fall only. Question: does one $30 pass covering ridge + lake beat a single-purpose park like Crater Lake, or is the spread too thin?

The most breathtaking views are always at the perilous peaks! After gritting my teeth and scrambling up the final stretch on my hands and knees, I finally summited Angels Landing! Standing atop this desolate giant rock at 5,790 feet, with the wind roaring in my ears, the view before me can only be described as a "miracle." The heart-pounding journey was absolutely worth it for this unforgettable God's-eye view: ⚪ The final white rock stairway to heaven (Pic 1-3) The closer you get to the summit, the more magical the landscape becomes. The golden-red sandstone gradually fades into vast expanses of pale, milky white. Sprinting up this near-vertical white rock ridge with nothing but the blazing sun and clear blue sky overhead—the feeling of getting closer to the heavens with every single step still makes my heart race! 🦖 Stepping into the ancient secret realm of Jurassic Park (Pic 4-5) Looking down toward the trailhead from the summit, the sheer depth of Zion Canyon is unbelievable. Towering, razor-sharp red rock cliffs rise abruptly on both sides, while the valley floor is covered in a dense forest. Sitting on the cliff's edge and taking it all in, it honestly looks like an ancient, untamed world straight out of "Jurassic Park" or "King Kong." I kept expecting a T-Rex or some giant beast to come crashing out of the trees down below at any moment! 🌊 The ultimate test for vertigo: Gazing at the Temple of Sinawawa (Pic 6-8) Turning to the other side, you'll see the magnificent canyon leading toward the Temple of Sinawawa in the distance, with the emerald Virgin River winding through a massive, thousand-foot-deep fissure. Dangling your feet over the edge of the sheer drop and staring into the endless abyss thousands of feet below, the intense, guardrail-free exposure is enough to make anyone afraid of heights weak in the knees! 🐉 The descent is the true hardcore challenge (Pic 9-10) After snapping enough epic photos at the top, it was time to head down. As the saying goes, "going up is easy, going down is hard." When you have to face that razor-thin "dragon's spine" head-on and look down at the plunging drop-offs on both sides as you descend, the psychological pressure is double what it was on the way up. Gripping the chains tightly, every step requires absolute focus and extreme caution. Having conquered this red beast and soaked in the epic views for my travel buddy who stayed behind at Scout Lookout, this hardcore Zion adventure is officially complete! 📍 Check-in coordinates: Angels Landing Summit, Zion National Park

Located in the heart of Utah, Zion National Park is one of America’s most breathtaking natural wonders. With its towering sandstone cliffs, deep canyons, emerald rivers, and dramatic desert landscapes, Zion feels like a place sculpted by nature’s imagination. The moment I entered the park, I was surrounded by massive red rock walls rising thousands of feet above the valley floor. The sheer scale of the landscape was both humbling and unforgettable. 🏞️ Zion’s iconic canyon is a masterpiece of colors and textures, where shades of red, orange, and cream glow brilliantly beneath the desert sun. 🌿 Despite its rugged appearance, the park is full of life. Cottonwood trees, hanging gardens, and the winding Virgin River create a beautiful contrast against the towering cliffs. 🥾 Every trail offers a different perspective, from panoramic viewpoints high above the canyon to peaceful riverside walks beneath the massive rock formations. 📸 My favorite moment was watching the evening sunlight illuminate the canyon walls, turning them into glowing shades of gold and crimson while shadows slowly filled the valley below. 🌄 Whether you’re hiking, exploring scenic drives, or simply admiring the views, Zion delivers unforgettable experiences at every turn. ✨ Zion National Park is a place where nature’s power, beauty, and artistry come together perfectly. 📍 Zion National Park, Utah, USA 🇺🇸 “Some landscapes are impressive. During the summer months, Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is closed to private vehicles, leaving the road open only to park shuttles and cyclists. This means you can cruise along the winding path between towering monoliths with virtually no traffic, making for a safe and incredibly relaxing ride. 🌬️ Beat the Heat: While valley floor temperatures soar in summer, the constant breeze you catch while cycling significantly drops the perceived temperature, making it far more comfortable than hiking. 🏞️ Unobstructed 360-Degree Views: Unlike being stuck in a shuttle where your view is limited, cycling lets you look up and fully soak in the massive cliff walls, clear blue skies, and lush greenery. 📸 Total Flexibility: Spot a stunning view or a refreshing stream? Just pull over whenever you want to snap a photo or take a break. You’re in total control of your own pace. Exploring Zion on two wheels allows you to slow down and truly connect with the landscape. Between the sound of the rushing Virgin River and the sight of the majestic red rocks, it’s easily the most immersive way to experience this natural wonder in the summer heat.

Arches National Geologic Park is located in the town of Moab, Utah, USA. It is home to over 2,000 natural sandstone arches. Years of wind and time have sculpted the red rock landscape, creating a strong sense of wilderness desolation. It is also an unmissable natural landmark on any American West road trip. The entire park is connected by a scenic road linking all the attractions, allowing you to drive slowly along the route and stop freely for photos. The Delicate Arch is the soul landmark of the entire park and a symbol of Utah. At sunset, the orange-red rock walls are wrapped in the glow of the setting sun, creating a breathtaking scene 📸 The North and South Window Arches trail is gentle and easy, allowing you to check in at two adjacent stone arches with a short walk, making it stress-free for beginners and elders. Devil’s Garden hides the Landscape Arch, which spans 93 meters in length. The thin rock wall standing between the canyons offers a visually stunning experience. The balanced rock by the roadside stands firmly on a narrow stone base, perfect for snapping fun wilderness shots 🪨 Far from city light pollution in the desert area, the Milky Way clearly spreads above the arches at night. The quiet wilderness is perfect for slowing down and feeling the romantic sediment of geological time. ✅ Concise and Practical Guide at the End Transportation 1. Self-driving (the only recommended way) Base yourself in Moab town, just a 10-minute drive to the park entrance; from Salt Lake City, it’s a 4-hour drive, and from Zion National Park, about 3.5 hours by car. There is no public bus service inside the park. Sedans can access the main roads, while less-traveled gravel roads are better suited for SUVs. 2. Public Transportation There are almost no convenient public transport options, so relying on public transit is not recommended. Short-distance car rentals are an alternative. 🅿️ Parking Each trailhead has its own dedicated parking lot. Parking spaces are very tight during the peak season from May to October. Arriving before 7 AM increases your chances of finding a spot. Delicate Arch, Devil’s Garden, and the Window areas consume parking spaces the fastest. If parking is full, you can first visit smaller, less crowded viewpoints along the way and return later to avoid peak times. All parking in the park is free 🆓. Parking on the roadside or blocking traffic is prohibited. ✅ Must-Visit Spots 1. Delicate Arch: The park’s core landmark and prime sunset photo spot, with a simple distant viewing platform requiring no strenuous hiking. 2. North and South Window Arches: Low-difficulty leisure trail with two stone frame arches that are very photogenic. 3. Landscape Arch: The world’s longest natural stone arch, with a flat and easy trail. 4. Balanced Rock: A short roadside stop with a giant suspended rock that is highly recognizable. 5. Devil’s Garden Loop: An advanced hiking route unlocking multiple lesser-known arches in one go. ✅ Practical Tips 1. Duration: Allocate 3 hours for a relaxed self-driving visit; a full day is needed to complete the core hiking routes. 2. Best Time to Visit: April to May and September to October, when the weather is cool and you avoid the desert’s intense summer heat. 3. Entrance Fee: $30 per private vehicle, valid for 7 days. For better value, consider the $80 annual pass for all U.S. national parks. 4. Essentials: The desert sun is intense, so bring plenty of drinking water, high-SPF sunscreen, a hat, and non-slip hiking shoes. There are no restaurants inside the park, so stock up on snacks and water in Moab beforehand. 5. Precautions: Do not climb or touch the sandstone walls, as weathered rocks are prone to falling and collapsing.

Safely retreating from the vertical, thousand-foot chains of Angels Landing, my racing heartbeat finally settled back into my chest just as the golden midday sun ignited the canyon. Since I'm already here, how could I not check out Zion's other legend—The Narrows? In just one day, I collected both the "highest peak" and the "deepest depths" of Zion National Park into my memories! 🏔️ Farewell, the spine of the behemoth I just conquered: On the way down, the views and lighting constantly shifted. Looking back at the steep rock walls I had just traversed (Pic 2), the crowd climbing up that narrow ridge now looked as tiny as ants. The rocks glowed a rugged red in the sunlight. Along the trail, I even bumped into a fearless little furry friend (Pic 3), calmly munching on a pinecone near the perilous cliff edge—now that's a true cliffside hermit! 🦅 The 9.5-foot-wingspan overlord of the canyon (Pic 5): Passing by an educational signboard about the California Condor, seeing its exaggerated wingspan compared to the vast red rock canyon before me, I really wished I could witness their majestic flight across the sky with my own eyes. Farewell, Angels Landing! ☀️ The golden canyon ignited by the midday sun (Pic 1): Returning to the valley floor, the midday sun poured down unreservedly. Rows of trees, already dressed in their autumn colors, gleamed like gold under the blazing sun, sharply contrasting with the hundreds-of-meters-high vertical dark red boulders behind them. This color contrast is absolutely insane! 💦 Temple of Sinawawa: Sneaking a peek at the entrance to the "Water World" (Pics 8-10): Hopping on the shuttle and getting off at the final stop, Temple of Sinawawa, I took a short stroll along the Riverside Walk and finally arrived at the starting point of the legendary The Narrows. Before my eyes, the Virgin River flowed gently through the steep, confined, thousand-foot slot canyon. Watching those hardcore hikers fully geared up and marching into the freezing river water, I couldn't help but sigh: without renting specialized waterproof and slip-resistant canyon boots, waders, and trekking poles, you can really only be a bystander on the shore. Next time, I'll definitely come fully equipped to conquer this river-tracing route! The first half was conquering the cliffs, and the second half was checking in at the earth's rift. Zion, you are seriously too hardcore and absolutely addictive! 📍 Check-in coordinates: Angels Landing ➡️ Temple of Sinawawa (The Narrows)

Sand Caves: Located very close to the town of Kanab, less than a 10-minute drive. You can overlook the entire interior of the caves, making it a great spot for photos. The uphill path is a bit steep, so remember to wear non-slip shoes. Be sure to check in here as there are many holes to explore. Park at the Moqui Cave Museum or Sand Caves parking lot and walk along the trail for 15 minutes to reach the caves.

#springtravel The "Spirit" of the Virgin River "Everything in Zion exists because of the Virgin River. In the spring, you see her in her full power. She is a restless, muddy, creative force. Sitting on a rock by the river in May, watching the water rush past, you realize you are watching the park being made. It’s a place of constant erosion and constant growth. There is an energy to the river in the spring that is infectious. It makes you want to explore, climb, and move. It’s the pulse of the canyon."

#springtravel The Silence of the High Plateau "While the canyon floor is busy, the Kolob Terrace road in May is a sanctuary of silence. We drove up to the 'Lava Point' overlook. At 7,800 feet, you are looking down into the Zion fingers. The only sound was the wind through the sagebrush and the occasional cry of a hawk. In the spring, the plateau is a sea of green grass and wildflowers. It’s the 'forgotten' Zion, and it’s where the soul of the park really feels accessible. It’s a place for deep thinking and big views."

#springtravel The Mt. Carmel Tunnel Experience "Driving through the 1.1-mile Mt. Carmel Tunnel in May 2026 is still a highlight. Built in 1930, it has 'windows' cut into the side of the cliff that offer fleeting, spectacular views of the canyon. If you have an RV, you need a special permit and an escort. In the spring, the drive on the east side of the tunnel is world-class, with 'washboard' rock formations and winding turns. It’s a masterpiece of engineering that feels like you're entering a secret world. Just remember to turn on your headlights!"

Starting the national park loop from Las Vegas is the best way to experience the unique charm of the Western US, but the route covers a large area with big temperature differences in different places, so you need to prepare different clothes for the trip! Early December was started with a roadtrip from LA to Denver. On the drive we stopped at Zion and had the most wonderful and refreshing hike. Every part absolutely breathtaking. Once we finished up the hike we stopped at a brewery that was in the town right by. Nothing like going on a fun nature walk and following it with a beer. This was a fun trip, and this park is one that can be done in any kind of weather.

Zion National Park is a must-visit spot on the Grand Circle tour. You'll be excited by the strange rock formations you've never seen in Japan. It's fun to hike up slowly! By the way, you can buy admission passes cheaply on Mercari and other sites, so you'll be lucky if you can buy one at the right time. #mountain climbing #breathtaking views #overseas travel #America

Zion National Park located in Utah. Very beautiful place to visit. If you love hiking this is one of the parks you should consider visiting. The Zion Park is not just for hiking, you can get on a shuttle to several destination points and just go walk in a park by the river or just sit and relax looking at beautiful, tall, multicolored mountains. We visited this park in April, the weather was perfect for hiking, not too cold and not too hot. The only thing I would say that we didn’t really like is that there were a lot of people that day, sometimes you feel like people were back to back or one after another.
