Just got back from taking my kid to see "The Immortal Legion," and even now, they keep imitating the soldiers in the show, shouting "General!" The crowds are everywhere, and the most stunning locations are always packed, making it hard to get the perfect shot. I accidentally stumbled upon the perfect solution—a historical park filled with breathtaking "scenery" for your Hanfu photos. It feels like you’ve left the crowds for a deserted ancient city, mostly because of the 120 RMB entrance fee. This is China’s largest Tang Dynasty-style royal garden theme park, a 5A-rated cultural site. 🗺️ It’s very easy to find, as it’s located right next to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔). China is literally another planet! 🪐 To ensure a comfortable trip, prepare in advance 👇 🔌 1. Plugs and Adapters: China uses type A and type I plugs. Check if they differ from your country's standards and buy a universal adapter in advance. Hotels don't always provide them. 😉 💵 2. Money and Payment Apps · Exchange some of your money for yuan cash—keep it as a backup. · Download Alipay, verify your passport, and link a foreign card. You can pay in two ways: directly from your card by scanning it or from the built-in wallet—choose what's most convenient! · Download WeChat and set up WeChat Pay as a backup. WeChat is also useful for communicating with guides and hotel staff. 🌐 3. eSIM and Navigation. Google services, YouTube, Instagram, and common messaging apps are blocked in China. · Get an international eSIM with a data plan before your trip (for example, on trip.com, get at least 2 GB per day). With it, Google services and social media will work without a VPN. · Download Amap for navigation. You can add hotels and attractions to your favorites in advance. 🛂 4. Passport. Carry your original passport with you ALWAYS! Print the voucher or save a screenshot of the hotel name and address in Chinese (not English!) to your gallery. The artifacts are incredibly valuable, so be sure to book in advance. 📍Xi'an City Wall: You can rent a bike to ride along it and see the panoramic view of the old city; the lighting is best in the evening. 📍Bell and Drum Towers: City landmarks. Viewing them from a distance is enough for photos; you don't necessarily need to buy a ticket to go up. 📍Terracotta Warriors: Absolutely stunning. The Grand Tang Ever Bright City is extremely crowded. It's hard to move during holidays, so try to visit during off-peak times. 4. The Terracotta Warriors are far from the city center. Allow at least half a day and don't miss the last bus. 5. There are many salespeople around tourist attractions. Choose based on your needs and spend rationally. It's not that Xi'an isn't great. The crowds during peak season will directly lower your travel experience. While browsing flights from Singapore to Xi’an, I came across a return fare of just US$260 per person. At first, I honestly thought I might have missed something. Because when you compare it with other available options, fares can easily go above US$400 and even beyond US$800, depending on the dates and itinerary. So seeing US$260 for a round trip to Xi’an immediately made me stop and take a closer look. And yes, there is a catch. This is not the most effortless itinerary. It involves a transit in Shenzhen, so it is not the kind of journey where you simply board once and forget about everything until you arrive. But personally? For this price, I wouldn't mind. · -- ✈️ The journey, with one important thing to remember The outbound journey starts very early from Singapore, flying with Shenzhen Airlines via Shenzhen before continuing to Xi’an. The total journey is around 10 hours, including a 2-hour-50-minute connection in Shenzhen. There is one thing I would absolutely want to highlight for anyone considering this fare: On the outbound connection in Shenzhen, you need to collect your checked baggage and check it in again. That is important. With an early-morning departure, I would personally plan ahead and be at Changi Airport the night before or very early in the morning rather than rushing at the last minute. Once that part is taken care of, the rest of the journey is straightforward, and the reward is arriving in Xi’an. The return journey is a little more relaxed. There is a longer connection in Shenzhen, but you do not need to collect and re-check your baggage on the way back. And the fare includes 23 kg of checked baggage, which makes the US$260 price even more appealing. · -- 🏮 Is a little extra effort worth it for Xi’an? For me, absolutely. Xi’an is one of those destinations where I feel the journey itself is only a small part of the story. The moment you start imagining the ancient city walls, historic streets, traditional architecture, evening lights and the atmosphere of one of China's great historic cities, that little inconvenience of a transit suddenly feels much less important. Yes, you may be a little tired. Yes, Shenzhen adds an extra step. But sometimes travel is about accepting a little inconvenience in exchange for experiencing somewhere you've genuinely wanted to see. And I have a feeling that once you are walking through Xi’an, you won't be thinking about the hours spent in transit anymore. You'll simply be glad you came. · -- 💰 US$260 changes the equation This is probably the part that impressed me most. Singapore ⇌ Xi’an for US$260 round trip, per person. With 23 kg checked baggage included, that is a seriously attractive fare. Sometimes even the most interesting place can become tiring when there are so many people around you. So my friends and I decided that we had an extremely important mission: We needed ice cream. I’ve always loved eating in unusual places. For me, a restaurant can be part of the travel experience, not just somewhere to have a meal. And I’m especially happy when a place has both an interesting interior and delicious food. 😄 I found this combination at SPACELAB near the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi’an. 🇨🇳 The whole restaurant has a fun space-themed design, but what really caught my attention was the way the food is delivered to the tables. Instead of a waiter simply carrying every dish over, the food arrives using a special track system that makes it look like it is travelling through the restaurant. 🚀😂 It’s such a small detail, but it turns an ordinary meal into something much more memorable. One useful detail if you visit: there are tablets on the tables for ordering, but you can also ask a waiter to take your order if you prefer. Hello, friend! If you're in Xi'an, the one place you absolutely cannot miss is the "Terracotta Army." 🏺 1. How to Get There? We took a taxi from the heart of Xi'an, which cost about 40 RMB and took around 50 minutes. You could take the metro to Huaqingchi Station (Exit C) and then catch the Lintong 613 or Lintong 602 bus, but that’s much more exhausting and time-consuming. To make navigating the subway easier, download the "Xi’an Subway" app. 🚇 2. Getting Your Tickets You’ll be dropped off at a large square with a semi-circular monument. There are tourist information centers on both the left and right sides where you can buy tickets for 120 RMB using your passport. The ticket covers both the Terracotta Army and the Lishan Garden (the Emperor’s burial site). 🎫 3. The Entrance Head to the central entrance with turnstiles for security and document checks (passport, tickets, and bags). 4. The Park After the turnstiles, there’s a small park. It's about a 5-minute walk—just head straight along any of the paths; they all lead to the second ticket checkpoint. 5. Finding Your Way Along the way, you’ll see maps showing the different locations: the pits, excavation sites, and the museum. Instead of hiring a guide, we used ChatGPT, which was both interesting and convenient! 🤖 6. Pit 1 Immediately after the second checkpoint is Pit 1. This is the largest excavation site, featuring thousands of infantry warriors. 7. Pits 2 and 3 These pits contain the command post and the cavalry. Don’t rush through the outdoor paths between them—look for black lines on the ground marking the boundaries of Pit 4, which remains unexcavated. You can also see a preserved excavation fragment under glass nearby. 8. The Museum Walking through the museum halls lets you get a closer look at the terracotta figures, take photos, and see the remnants of their original vibrant colors before the paint faded. Budget a few hours to see all the pits. 📸 9. The Exit & Shuttle As you head toward the exit, you’ll pass through a long street lined with shops, cafes, and persistent souvenir sellers. At the end of the road, you’ll see a large statue of Emperor Qin Shi Huang with his arm outstretched. Directly opposite the statue is the shuttle bus stop. These free buses run to Lishan Garden every 5 minutes. 🚌 10. Lishan Garden This is a massive extension of the complex. It houses the Emperor’s still-unopened tomb and several other excavation pits. 11. Getting Around Lishan The garden spans several dozen square kilometers, making it too large to explore on foot. There’s a ticket booth at the entrance where you can pay 15 RMB for an electric cart. Keep your ticket! It’s valid for all stops throughout the garden. 🛺 12. The Stops The electric cart will drop you at the first pit (the Acrobats). Once you're done, go to the next station, show your ticket, and hop back on the cart to the next stop. 13. Bronze Chariots Look forward to the pit featuring bronze chariots and a massive underground complex. 14. Grooms and Horses You'll also see the pit for stable hands and sacrificial horse burials. 15. Returning At the final station, the electric cart will take you back to the Lishan Garden entrance. 16. Back to the Start Follow the exit signs to the free shuttle bus stop, which will take you back to the main Terracotta Army entrance. The last bus leaves at 18:30. 🕒 Important: There are many pushy vendors and taxi drivers. It’s best not to engage with them, or you’ll have a hard time shaking them off. After the Terracotta Army, you can catch some evening shows back in Xi'an. The largest fountain show is at the North Square of the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. There’s also the spectacular "Xi’an Everlasting Love" at Xi’an Romance Park, and various large-scale open-air performances. ✨

It is not just a famous historical landmark where you stop for a few photos and then leave. For me, it was a place where I wanted to spend several hours, walk slowly, look at the details and simply enjoy the atmosphere. During the day, the area around the pagoda is especially beautiful. You can admire traditional Chinese architecture, gardens, historic buildings, elegant pavilions and lovely walking streets. Everything feels very harmonious. Ancient history exists right next to the modern city, but the place still has its own unique character. I really liked that you do not need a complicated plan here. You can simply walk around, follow the beautiful paths, stop whenever you see an interesting building, take photos and watch everyday life around you. Sometimes these are the best travel moments: when you are not rushing from one attraction to another, but just enjoying the place you are in. But in the evening, the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda becomes completely different. 🏮✨ As the lights turn on, the pagoda and the surrounding buildings become beautifully illuminated. The warm lights, traditional architecture, lanterns and evening atmosphere make the whole area feel almost magical. There are people walking with their families, meeting friends, taking photos and enjoying the evening. The area becomes more lively, but it still feels beautiful and atmospheric. I spent three days in Xi'an last week. As a native of Shanxi, I found the noodles to be just okay 🙏🏻. However, the desserts absolutely blew my mind time and time again—they truly have what it takes to compete with the top spots in the Shanghai and Zhejiang regions 👍 🔴 Misshome (P1-3) A local friend brought me here; it's tucked away in an alley near Xiangzimiao Street. The shop environment is gorgeous, and the street-side seating is so chill. They use very high-quality ingredients. For instance, the matcha is Japanese Isuzu, and the Durian Mille Crepe uses Malaysian durian 🇲🇾 (once you're used to Black Thorn or Musang King, Thai Golden Pillow just doesn't compare). We ordered the Strawberry Waterfall Souffle. Without exaggeration, it's the best 👄 I've ever eaten. It even beats that famous viral shop in Shanghai 🤭 🟢 Wonderful Dessert (P4-6) A viral spot in Shunchenxiang, surrounded by crowds of people waiting for a table. Make sure to grab a number at the front first; I waited an hour on a weekend afternoon. The decor is quite simple, with an old-school, vintage vibe for the tables and stools. The menu is also fairly fixed. But who would have thought this shop would be my absolute favorite 👄 of the trip? You must try the Pistachio Milk Ice; it's definitely worthy of being their signature 👍 It has a very creamy texture, isn't overly sweet, and the nutty aroma is intense. Many of the shaved ice bowls I've had in Tainan weren't as good as this. You can also try the traditional dessert soups; they are very clean and refreshing, with large chunks of taro balls and grass jelly. 🟣 Tomi Shio Kakigori (P7) A small hidden gem in a residential neighborhood. We went during peak meal hours so it was less crowded. We ordered the Apple Yogurt Berry Shaved Ice, which is incredibly photogenic. The whole apple is imported; after taking photos, you can ask the staff to help slice it. The shaved ice is covered in berry jam with cookies and popping boba inside. It's perfectly sweet and sour, and they even provide popping candy for a unique texture experience.
