Hidden deep in the mountain valleys of Zhaotong, Yunnan, lies a true “one-line city.” The narrowest part of the county town is less than 30 meters wide, and the widest is no more than 300 meters. Two mountains squeeze a river in between, with buildings half embedded in the mountainside and half hanging over the river. It’s so narrow that even traffic lights can’t fit, yet more than 300,000 people live here. Having been once, its lasting impact still lingers. · *Trip highlights** Dousha Pass, Yanjin’s most significant cultural landmark, is 23 km from the county town. Formerly known as Shimen Pass, it was the first dangerous checkpoint for ancient travelers entering Yunnan from Shu. The Qin Dynasty’s Five-Foot Road and the Han Dynasty’s Southern Yi Road intersect here. The remaining section of the Five-Foot Road is about 350 meters long, with deep horse hoof prints still visible on the stone steps. Suspended in the cliff crevices opposite are six Bo people hanging coffins. How they were placed there remains a mystery. Yanjin taxis charge per person: 5 yuan during the day and 10 yuan at night. New drivers should be cautious, as driving here is extremely challenging. High-speed rail to Yibin then transfer to a bus takes about 2.5 hours. The green train can reach Yanjin North Station, but tickets can’t be bought on 12306 and must be purchased at the window. The county town is very small and walkable. There aren’t many tourists outside of holidays. If time allows, staying overnight is recommended. Accommodations in the new county town are better, though the old town also has hotels but parking is a big issue. The canyon is cooler than outside, making summer visits comfortable. But the rainy season is prone to natural disasters, so check the weather forecast before setting out. Coming to Zhaotong in July is like finding a treasure 🌿 While Sichuan and Chongqing feel like steamers, here you still need a light jacket in the morning and evening, and a blanket at night. It truly lives up to the name "autumn city." Just got back from there and sorted out all the pitfalls and the best photo spots that filled my memory card. Just follow this guide. 📸 photo spots No need to say about Dashanbao, it’s the beauty crown of Zhaotong. At Jigongshan’s glass platform, looking down you see a sea of clouds rolling beneath your feet. The July meadows glow green, oat flowers are blooming, and when the wind blows, it looks like the Windows desktop comes alive. Tiaodun Lake is so blue it doesn’t look like a plateau lake. Cows and sheep graze slowly by the shore, and standing anywhere feels like a forest-themed photo shoot. Doushaguan ancient town is even more amazing. The horse hoof prints on the Qin dynasty’s five-foot road are still there. Nearby are the hanging coffins of the Bo people attached to the cliff. When the lanterns light up in the ancient town, wearing a plain dress and standing on the stone road instantly gives you a full time-travel vibe. You have to check out the "first-tier city" of Yanjin from the observation deck—the whole county town is squeezed between two mountains, the narrowest spot only 30 meters wide. The stilted buildings cling to the cliffs, creating a magical scene. Huanglian River is perfect for wearing a white dress. There are more than 40 waterfalls in a row, with mist spraying your face and dense shade from the trees. Standing under the waterfall and shooting against the light instantly creates a fairy-like atmosphere. Don’t forget to explore the steep streets of Zhaotong ancient city on your way back to town. The red walls, gray tiles, and Republic of China–style buildings, plus the flying eaves of Fuzhen Gate, make for a perfect vintage shot at dusk during the blue hour. ⚠️ pitfall guide The temperature difference between morning and night is no joke. The city is 26–27 degrees during the day, but Dashanbao is over 3,000 meters high and can drop to the teens at night. A light jacket or thin down jacket must be packed, or you’ll be shivering after watching the sunset. The UV rays on the plateau are fierce in July. Use SPF 50 or higher. Don’t skip the hat and sunglasses, or your face will hurt for two days after a day in the sun. Don’t do intense exercise at Dashanbao’s altitude. Walk and shoot slowly. Running a few steps will make you short of breath. The mountain roads to Dashanbao and Doushaguan are winding. If you get car sick, bring medicine in advance. Hiring a car with a driver is safer than self-driving because the driver knows the roads. When buying Zhaotong apples, look for the "ugly apples." They aren’t waxed or bagged, have rough skin, but are crisp, sweet, and juicy. The fancy gift boxes at tourist spots aren’t cost-effective. It’s better to pick loose apples at the farmers’ market. Rain showers come suddenly during the rainy season. Always carry a folding umbrella or disposable raincoat. Huanglian River has heavy mist, so put your phone in a waterproof bag. 🍜 food recommendations For breakfast, go straight for fried dough sticks wrapped in rice cakes with thin bean soup. Any street stall with a long line in the old town won’t disappoint—the rice cake wraps crispy and sticky fried dough, brushed with Zhaotong sauce, and the thin bean soup is smooth and savory. The whole set costs about 10 yuan and fills you up. If you want a change, try the lamb rice noodles. The milky white lamb soup has no gamey taste. The local-favorite shops on Chenxi Road are a safe bet. For lunch, have a bowl of Zhenxiong pig’s trotters rice noodles. The braised pig’s feet are tender and fall off the bone, and the broth is rich with bone flavor. Or try Zhaotong’s sour and spicy noodles, with a base made from raw vinegar and brown sugar, sour with a hint of sweetness and mild spiciness. Dinner and night market are the main event. Zhaotong’s small meat skewers were featured on "A Bite of China." The beef is soaked in marinade then grilled over charcoal, served in handfuls, crispy outside and tender inside. Paired with beef intestine wrapped with scallions, it’s amazing. If you’re worried about heatiness, ask the vendor for some Gastrodia elata steamed chicken. The Gastrodia elata from Xiaocaoba in Yiliang stewed with native chicken makes a golden broth that’s very comforting. Don’t miss the street charcoal-grilled potatoes, spread with Zhaotong sauce and sprinkled with chili powder. The soft and fragrant potatoes will have you licking your fingers. Cold jelly is a summer must-have for cooling down. The kind made from golden peas is chewy, served with chili oil and garlic water, and one slurp cools you to the core. I usually book accommodation and tickets on Trip.com in advance. Stay near the financial center in the city for easy access to the night market. If you want to shoot morning mist at Dashanbao, stay in a guesthouse in town. The conditions are simple, but you step out the door onto the meadow. 🗺️ itinerary Three days and two nights is just right, no rush. Day 1: Arrive at Zhaotong station. In the afternoon, visit Zhaotong ancient city and Wanghai Tower Park to acclimate to the altitude. At night, enjoy small meat skewers at the financial center night market. Day 2: Early morning hire a car to Dashanbao. Visit Tiaodun Lake, Jigongshan glass platform, and oat flower sea. Spend three to four hours at these stops. Stay overnight in Dashanbao town, with Gastrodia elata stewed chicken and starry night. Leibo, a mountain city in the folds of Daliang Mountain, belongs to the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province, located at the junction of Sichuan and Yunnan. The whole country is surrounded by mountains and rivers, with the majestic Daliangshan Mountains on one side and the endless Jinsha River on the other, presenting a magnificent landscape of three mountains and two rivers. Repo is a small city with magnificent mountains and rivers and pure humanities. Its beauty is native, vast, clean and quiet. It has both the majesty and vastness of Daliang Mountain and the gentleness and tranquility of lakes and streams. It is the most worthy of slow walking and enjoying the small secret place in Sichuan. In the early morning, the mist fills the streets and alleys. Local people in Liangshan can be seen everywhere on the streets. The wind carries the clear air of mountain vegetation. The buildings are spread out layer by layer along the mountain, and the distant mountains are covered with light clouds and fog all year round. Surrounded by mountains, the small town is unhurried, hiding the unique gentleness and vastness of the Liangshan Mountains in southern Sichuan. Walking on the streets, you can see the poetry of unmodified mountains and fields when you raise your eyes. There are rustic villages scattered in the mountains, with light fireworks and slow years. There is no impetuosity and haste here, only the stability of the mountains, the calmness of the river, and the peace of the grass and trees. Leibo hides the most pristine magnificence of Daliang Mountain, an untapped natural scenery that belongs to the depths of Liangshan Mountain alone. When my friend told me about Zhaotong, all I could think of were apples. But after coming here, I realized Zhaotong is far more vast than I imagined. It takes just over an hour by high-speed train from Kunming to Zhaotong. When I stepped out of the station, a cool breeze swept into my collar—22℃. Later, I checked and found that Zhaotong stays around this temperature all summer long, no wonder it’s called the “Summer Backyard Garden Secretly Loved by Sichuan and Chongqing Tourists.” On my second day in Zhaotong, I went to Dashanbao. Standing at the edge of the cliff looking down, there was a bottomless canyon beneath my feet, wind rushing up from the valley floor, and clouds drifting past my feet. I stood at the cliff edge for a long time, the wind almost making it hard to stand, but my eyes couldn’t look away. Locals told me this is the wintering ground for black-necked cranes, where thousands of cranes circle in the valley during winter—I came in the wrong season, but just standing here watching the sea of clouds roll by was worth the trip. On the third day in Zhaotong, I visited Doushaguang. The Wuchidao ancient path is carved into a vertical rock face, with horse hoof prints from the Tang Dynasty still visible on the stones. Standing on the ancient path looking down, the Guan River flows at the bottom of the canyon, and on the opposite cliff, there are hanging coffins of the Bo people. During my three days in Zhaotong, I ate roasted potatoes better than any trendy restaurant, and strolled through streets quieter than any ancient town—no Dali artsy vibe, no Lijiang hustle, but just the right amount of coolness and the perfect pace. 🚄 How to get there? Take the high-speed train to Zhaotong Station, about 1 hour from Kunming, about 2.5 hours from Chengdu. Attractions are spread out in the city, so it’s recommended to rent a car or hire a driver (about 200-300 RMB/day). 🎫 Ticket Information Dashanbao: about 78 RMB (includes sightseeing bus) Doushaguang: about 35 RMB Zhaotong Ancient City: free 🗺️ 3 Days 2 Nights Cool Summer Slow Travel Itinerary Day 1: Zhaotong Ancient City + Shenggeng Park Arrive in Zhaotong in the afternoon, stroll through Zhaotong Ancient City (free), where the cobblestone streets are lined with late Qing and early Republican era buildings, not overly commercialized, with locals sitting at doorsteps drinking tea and chatting. In the evening, take a walk in Shenggeng Park, where the lake reflects the city lights. Day 2: Dashanbao All Day Spend the whole day at Dashanbao—the most stunning natural scenery in Zhaotong. Stand on the great cliff overlooking the canyon, watch the sea of clouds surge, and feel the wind rushing up from the valley floor. Hike through meadows and see herds of cattle and sheep. In winter, you can also see thousands of black-necked cranes. Return to the city in the afternoon. Day 3: Doushaguang + Return In the morning, visit Doushaguang—the Wuchidao ruins, an ancient path carved into a vertical rock face with clear Tang Dynasty hoof prints. On the opposite cliff are the Bo people’s hanging coffins. Stand on the ancient path and watch the Guan River flow at the bottom of the canyon.
