The Mahavira Hall, with seven colored sculptures, represents the past seven Buddhas, symbolizing the five emperors before Yelü Longxu, plus Empress Dowager Xiao and Yelü Longxu himself. The smiling Bodhisattva in a relaxed pose; also, the 42 flying Apsaras on the beams are male; be sure to look at the base of the pillars, carved with various patterns. Lazy travelers can just copy this— Guta district / Linghe district (top pick)​ Right next to Linghe night market and Guta Park. The feeling of strolling back to the hotel after barbecue at night is something only those who stay here will understand. Hotels in this area on Trip.com cost 180–300 yuan per person per night. Wangfu·Boli, Jinzhou Wangfu Hakka Boyin, and Yusu Zhenpin are all here, rated above 4.7. Booking blindly won’t go wrong ✨. Bijia Mountain / coastal area​ 🌅 If you want a sea view, choose here. Jinzhou Bijia Mountain Manko Hotel’s sea view rooms offer great value, priced 200–400 yuan per night. The downside is it’s far from the city’s night markets—a 30-minute taxi ride—so it’s best for those heading to Bijia Mountain early the next day. 💡 July rooms are tight. Book on Trip.com at least two weeks in advance. Same-day bookings usually only have sky-high prices left. 🗺️ My lazy itinerary (no rushing) Day 1: ancient city vibes + barbecue freedom​ 🍢 Left the hotel lazily at 10 AM, first stopped by Guta Historical and Cultural Park. The thousand-year-old Liao Dynasty Guangji Temple tower with red walls is a 100% photo-worthy spot 📸, free entry. Nearby is the Jinzhou Museum with Liao Western artifacts (free, ID required). At noon, headed straight to Rongpeng steamed pancake. The green bean and pork rib steamed pancake is intangible cultural heritage. The pancake soaks up the broth and is torn apart to eat. 40 yuan per person fills you up 🥹. Afternoon reserved for the Liaoshen Campaign Memorial Hall (free, reservation required). The sound and light show at the “Conquering Jinzhou” panorama gave me goosebumps 🇨🇳. A slow 1.5-hour visit is just right. In the evening, went to Linghe night market for grilled oil edges, grilled oysters, chicken racks, grilled cold noodles wrapped with stinky tofu, paired with ice-cold Hongbaolai beer. 50 yuan per person to eat until you can barely stand 🍻. Day 2: sea sky bridge + mountain zen​ ⛰️ Important: check the tidal schedule for Bijia Mountain the day before! At low tide, a 1.6 km sandy “sky bridge” appears, allowing you to walk to the island. This experience is worth the ticket price 🌉. Admission is 65 yuan. If you miss low tide, you have to take a boat back. The all-stone Sanqing Pavilion on the mountain is worth climbing for a panoramic view of Bohai Bay. The whole walk takes 2.5 hours at a relaxed pace and isn’t tiring. Bring sun-protective clothing and a folding umbrella, or you’ll end up peeling after half a day 🌂. 🍻 Some random thoughts Jinzhou doesn’t have that refined influencer vibe. It’s rough around the edges, but the rougher, the tastier and more addictive. The red walls of Guangji Temple, the sea breeze at Bijia Mountain, the cumin aroma mixed with ice-cold beer at Linghe night market—this small city in western Liaoning holds you with its everyday life charm 🌃. Next time I come, I plan to add Jiuhua Mountain’s Little Potala Palace and Yixian’s Fengguo Temple to the itinerary. I heard Fengguo Temple’s ticket is 48 yuan and you can see seven large Liao Dynasty Buddhas. Leaving a little mystery for next time ✈️.

Fengguo Temple, known as the "Number One Great Buddha in North China," is an ancient Liao Dynasty temple and a nationally protected key cultural relic. It was originally built in the seventh year of the Liao Kaitai era (1012 AD). Throughout its long history, Fengguo Temple has suffered multiple damages due to wars and natural disasters. In 1956, a comprehensive restoration was carried out to protect this precious historical and cultural heritage; in 1988, large-scale repairs were undertaken again; on June 25, 2001, it was announced by the State Council as a national key cultural relic protection unit. In 2013, the Mahavira Hall of Fengguo Temple was included in the seventh batch of national key cultural relic protection units by the State Council. Fengguo Temple is located north of Dongjie Road in Yixian County, Jinzhou City, Liaoning Province, covering an area of about 40,000 square meters. The temple faces south with its main axis running north-south, measuring 87.6 meters wide from east to west and 140.8 meters long from south to north. Originally a pagoda-temple complex, the existing buildings include the Shanmen Gate, Bell Tower, Mahavira Hall, Guansheng Hall, and Cishi Pavilion. Among them, the Mahavira Hall is the main building of Fengguo Temple and one of the representative works of Liao Dynasty architecture. The hall is nine bays wide and five bays deep, about 30 meters high, and is a wooden structure with a single-eave hip roof. Inside the hall are nine large Buddha statues and eighteen smaller Buddha statues, with the three central large Buddha statues—Liao Dynasty polychrome sculptures—being collectively known as one of the "Three Wonders of the Nation." The Liao Dynasty polychrome sculptures in Fengguo Temple hold high artistic and historical value. The central Shakyamuni Buddha statue stands 7.2 meters tall, with a bare chest and exposed breast, displaying a kind and compassionate expression; the Akshobhya Buddha is 8.2 meters tall; and the Maitreya Buddha is 5.6 meters tall. These statues all face east and are called the "Three Buddhas of the Three Times" or the "Three Saints of the East." Additionally, there are eighteen other Buddha and Bodhisattva statues inside the hall. These sculptures are carved from red sandstone, vividly lifelike, reflecting the stylistic characteristics of Liao Dynasty art. Besides the statues, the walls of Fengguo Temple are also adorned with murals. Most of these murals were painted during the Song and Yuan Dynasties, depicting Buddhist stories, landscapes, figures, flowers, birds, and animals. Although some murals have faded or peeled off, their exquisite artistic and historical cultural value remains evident.
