I've already suffered in Yangquan and returned home; I really don't recommend coming in March.
👋🏻✨ I recently discovered a hidden gem of a travel destination – Yangquan! This "pearl of the mountains" nestled in the Taihang Mountains truly amazed me! 🏔️💎 Yangquan is located in eastern Shanxi, perfectly situated between Taiyuan and Shijiazhuang, making its location incredibly convenient! 🚗💨 It boasts the majestic grandeur of the Taihang Mountains, the industrial heritage of a century-old coal mine, ancient villages, hot springs, and revolutionary sites – it's practically an all-rounder in the travel world! Although it's a bit chilly in March, there are fewer crowds, the scenery is beautiful, and you don't even have to queue for photos – it's simply fantastic! 📸❄️
【Detailed 3-Day Itinerary】
DAY 1: First Impression of the Mountain City
Morning: First stop at Guanshan Forest Park! 🌲☀️ This is a cultural landmark of Yangquan; the main peak resembles an ancient official's hat, which is very unique! Hike to "Chonggu Academy," with its bluestone steps and towering ancient cypress trees – every snapshot is a masterpiece of traditional Chinese style! Tickets are 30 yuan. It opens at 8 am and is the least crowded, so remember to wear non-slip shoes!
Noon: A must-visit is Lao Yangquan Restaurant! 🍜🔥 Their noodles are amazing! The noodles, pressed using a special pressing machine, are as thin as hair, paired with mutton soup—one bite warms you right to the core! You can eat your fill for 30 yuan per person, super cost-effective!
Afternoon: Let's go to the Hundred Regiments Offensive Memorial Hall! 🇨🇳📚 Free admission! Located atop Lion's Head Mountain, it's the site of the main battlefield of the Hundred Regiments Offensive. The museum uses holographic projections to recreate historical scenes, and the monument at the summit is 40 meters high, offering panoramic views of Yangquan! Closed every Monday, so don't go to waste!
Evening: Yangquan Coal Mine Museum! ⛏️🌙 Tickets are 60 yuan and include a mine experience. You can wear miner's clothes and a headlamp, descending 200 meters underground into a simulated mine to feel the industrial pulse of the "Coal Capital"! The temperature is low in the mine, remember to bring a light jacket!
DAY 2: Slow Time in an Ancient Village
Morning: Daqi Ancient Village! 🏘️🌄 The character "汖" is pronounced chǎng! It's a thousand-year-old village nestled deep in the mountains of Yu County. Over 150 stone houses are built against the mountainside, cascading like steps, earning it the nickname "Potala Palace deep in the Taihang Mountains"! The village still preserves traditional oil pressing and homespun cloth weaving; you can experience homespun cloth weaving for 30 yuan per person.
Lunch: Lunch at a farmhouse restaurant near the ancient village! 🍲🌽 You must try the Pingding clay pot! The meat stewed in a clay pot made from local clay is fragrant and not greasy, paired with fresh wild vegetables—the taste is so pure it'll make you cry!
Afternoon: Niangziguan! 🏯🌊 The ninth pass of the Great Wall, magnificent and imposing! The pass, waterfall, Pingyang Lake, waterside dwellings, and Ming and Qing dynasty ancient streets—all in one place! Tickets are approximately 27 yuan, open from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Standing on the fortified wall overlooking the magnificent landscape, you'll feel like an ancient female general!
Evening: Return to the city and stroll through the night market! 🌃🍢 You absolutely must try Yangquan stir-fried mung bean jelly! The jelly is stir-fried to a crispy exterior and tender interior, paired with a special sauce—spicy and delicious! A satisfying meal costs only 20-30 yuan per person!
DAY 3: A Natural Oxygen Bar Trip
Morning: Cangshan Scenic Area! ⛰️🌅 The legendary hiding place of the Zhao family orphan, a picturesque landscape of mountains and water! Walk along the mountain trails, admiring the strange peaks and rocks and babbling brooks, and learn about that tragic historical story. Open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM; it's recommended to drive or hire a car.
Lunch: Have lunch at a farmhouse restaurant within the scenic area! 🍚🐔 Wild vegetables and free-range eggs are freshly picked and prepared, so fresh you can taste the sunshine!
Afternoon: Cuifeng Mountain Natural Scenic Area! 🍁🌲 Yangquan's "green lung," with an incredibly high forest coverage, it's a natural oxygen bar! The scenic area offers three routes: Green Valley, Buddha's Decree Pavilion, and Maple Leaf Pavilion. You can also see naturally formed "Wealth Gate," "Fortune Gate," and "Blessing Gate," each with auspicious meanings! Opening hours: 8:30-18:00.
【Must-Visit List】🌟 Niangziguan Pass: Experience the grandeur of ancient military defense engineering; taking photos on the pass walls is incredibly impressive! The Water Curtain Cave Waterfall inside the pass is a must-see; the rushing water is magnificent!
Daqi Ancient Village: The vicissitudes of this thousand-year-old village are palpable. Touch the Ming and Qing dynasty stone carvings, experience intangible cultural heritage crafts; time seems to slow down here.
Hundred Regiments Offensive Memorial Hall: Free! Free! Free! Important things must be said three times! Red Culture Education Base: Learn about the history of the War of Resistance Against Japan and feel the heroism of revolutionary predecessors.
Guanshan Forest Park: A secluded retreat for literati and scholars, with ancient Ming and Qing dynasty buildings and cliff carvings scattered throughout the mountains, exuding a rich cultural atmosphere.
Taolin Valley Scenic Area: An ecological park in the city, with fresh air and beautiful scenery; you might even spot squirrels! 🐿️💕
【Hotel Recommendation】🏨 The Holiday Inn Express Yangquan Central is truly my favorite! 💖 This InterContinental hotel has a fantastic location on Dalian Street in the Development Zone, incredibly convenient! The best part is the complimentary soda water, cookies, and unlimited ice cream in the lobby! 🍦😍 They even offer late-night beef noodles from 6:30 PM to 9 PM – the service is amazing! The rooms are clean and tidy, fully equipped with smart devices, and offer excellent value for money!
If your budget allows, the Novotel Yangquan High-tech Zone is also a good choice, with a children's playground and more luxurious facilities. Personally, I think the Holiday Inn Express is more than enough to meet all your needs!
🚌【Transportation Guide】 For city transportation, I recommend a combination of buses and taxis! Bus routes 1 and 3 can take you to the City Museum. To get to Guanshan, you can take a bus to the vicinity and then walk. For more distant attractions like Niangziguan and Cangshan, I suggest hiring a car or driving yourself. A car hire costs about 400 yuan per day, which is very cost-effective if shared among multiple people!
My personal favorite place was Daqi Ancient Village. The tranquility and seclusion there instantly made me forget all my worries. The worst part was the weather in March. The temperature difference between day and night was huge. It was so hot at midday that I wanted to take off my coat, but it was so cold in the mornings and evenings that I was shivering. Dressing became the biggest daily challenge! 😅❄️
【Friendly Reminder】💡 The temperature difference between day and night in Yangquan in March is extremely large. Be sure to bring a thick coat and a light inner layer so you can easily add or remove layers!
Some scenic areas have many mountain paths, so comfortable, non-slip shoes are a must!
Daqi Ancient Village has limited commercial facilities, so remember to bring your own snacks and drinking water!
Booking tickets and hotels in advance on Ctrip can save you a lot of money!
【Food Frenzy】🍴 Guo You Rou (过油肉): One of Shanxi's top ten famous dishes! The pork slices are tender and juicy, paired with wood ear mushrooms and garlic sprouts, a tangy and appetizing flavor that fills your mouth with the aroma of a wok! 🔥 Piao Min Qu (飘敏曲): Noodles made from mung bean flour are as thin as hair, with a flavorful broth and a rich bean aroma. A bowl of this in the morning is warming and satisfying!
Hu Du (糊嘟): A thick cornmeal noodle dish, served with potatoes and green beans, dipped in chili sauce. A tangy and spicy flavor that whets the appetite, the aroma of whole grains is irresistible!
Zao Jie Gao (枣介糕): A sweet cake made from yellow millet flour and red dates, soft, glutinous, and sweet without being cloying. A local traditional pastry, it symbolizes "early marriage"! Pingding Casserole: Meat stewed in a casserole made from local clay, the meat is incredibly fragrant, and the broth is rich and flavorful – a unique taste only found in Yangquan!
