Walking along the plank road, the sound of water fills your ears and a chill runs from your feet to the back of your head. These 8 spots have few people and beautiful scenery—I’ve checked them out for you. 1️⃣ Qujing | Yunnan 📍 Luoping rapeseed flower sea, don’t just focus on the Golden Rooster Peak cluster. For kids, I recommend the Bayzi Lake Reservoir side where the flower fields are flat, strollers can roll on the ridges, and kids can run without fear of falling. Peak bloom is from late February to mid-March. After that, don’t force it as the flowers fade. At Jiulong Waterfall Group, many enter through the main gate, but entering from the back gate is downhill and saves half the effort. ⏰ Arrive before 10 AM when the mist hasn’t risen yet, so you won’t have to compete for railing spots in photos. In autumn, the mountains are covered in red maple leaves against white walls and black tiles, one of the most underrated autumn scenes I’ve seen. Push a stroller on the gentle mountain loop trail outside the village. Fallen leaves can catch the stroller wheels. ⏰ Visit from mid-November to early December. Don’t get the timing wrong. Sanbai Mountain, the source of the Dongjiang River, has water so clear you can see the bottom. The scenic area has electric carts that take you halfway up, then a short walk on a boardwalk. The glass bridge section scares kids but they want to cross it. While others squeeze into popular cities to see the back of someone’s head, I prefer to take my kids to places that sound cool just by their names. These 8 spots are either so off the beaten path that locals want to keep them secret or seriously underrated. Summer is the perfect time to visit. 01 Dalian | Liaoning When bringing kids to Dalian, don’t rush straight to Tiger Beach. I arrived at Tiger Beach Ocean Park at 10 AM. The beluga whales and penguins do delight kids, but there’s a lot of walking between exhibits, and little legs get cranky. ⚠️ A stroller is a must, don’t skip it. In the afternoon, head to Tangli Lake Park instead. This is a local secret cool spot. The dense shade and lake breeze drop the temperature by about 5 degrees. Lay out a picnic mat and you can relax all afternoon. In the evening, visit Xinghai Square where seagulls chase bread crumbs and kids can laugh out loud. Save Jinshitan National Tourist Resort for the next morning. Go early when it’s less crowded. Bring enough water and snacks. Don’t expect to buy anything halfway. 05 Zhongwei | Ningxia At Shapotou in Zhongwei, kids can’t stop playing in the sand. We rented sandboards and slid down from the top of the dunes. The wind rushed into our collars, and kids screamed with laughter for over an hour. In the Yellow River area, you can ride a sheepskin raft, drifting gently on the river. The contrast between desert sand and green oasis on both banks is striking. ⏰ Visit the desert area after 6 PM. The boatwoman’s oar creaked as kids leaned on me, almost falling asleep. 📍 Don’t miss Yiren Alley. It’s so narrow only one person can pass at a time. Kids find it fun and walked back and forth several times. ⏰ Visit the ancient town after 5:30 PM. Most tourists have left, and the light is just right. The old walls glow warm orange in the sun. 🍜 Sanhe rice dumplings are a signature dish. The crust is crispy and the filling savory. Kids eat them one after another. ⚠️ Some silver jewelry shops in the town have ridiculously inflated prices. Just look, don’t buy. 08 Nanping | Fujian I came to Wuyi Mountain mainly for the bamboo raft ride on Jiuqu Stream. Not far away is Jiangshan 28 Du, an ancient village hidden in the mountains. Residents speak a dialect passed down for hundreds of years, and the old shops along the street haven't even changed their signs. Itinerary: Day 1: Wake up naturally, leisurely wander to Shuijingmen. In the afternoon, visit Quzhou Confucian Family Temple of the Southern Branch. In the evening, take a walk along the Qujiang River and watch the sunset. No need to squeeze onto crowded viewing platforms; walk along the riverside path to a quieter spot, and you can clearly see the scenery on the opposite bank. Photos taken here will have very few passersby. Afterward, wander through Andong Old Street. It's not a fake, trendy street; it truly retains old businesses from decades ago. Your parents' generation will recognize old radios and vintage posters, and they can chat for ages just by glancing at them. Further afield, Kuandian Lvjiang Village has mountains of rapeseed flowers in spring and golden rice fields in autumn. For families with kids, I recommend staying directly in the old town. A guesthouse in the alleys near Lijing Gate costs just over 200 yuan per night, and various soup restaurants are right downstairs. ⏰ Leave before 8:00 AM and head to Longmen Grottoes. Before the large tour groups arrive, walk slowly along the Yi River. The platform in front of the Lushena Buddha is not crowded, and kids can run around freely. The whole trip takes about 2 hours. Strollers can use the main path, so you don't have to climb too many stairs. At noon, return to the old town for a bowl of beef soup.📍 The "Old Town Tofu Soup" on Minzhu Street is popular with locals; the soup is fresh, and the shredded flatbread is filling. A family of three can eat for 30 yuan. In the afternoon, skip White Horse Temple; it's too crowded. Go to Wangcheng Park instead. The river water flows year-round under the bridge, and the breeze is incredibly comfortable. Zhaozhou Bridge admission is 40 yuan, and children are free. The bridge itself takes 20 minutes to see, but you can spend an entire afternoon in the park next to it. 📍 There's a shallow water area at the east gate of the park, where the water is just above the ankles.
