Budget travelers, gather here! These 8️⃣ places are less crowded and more scenic in September and October, and you can have a great time on a budget of 500 RMB!
01 Tonghua City | Jilin
The Koguryo relics and the rapeseed flower fields of Ji'an are my two most vivid memories of Tonghua. In mid-to-late September, the rapeseed flowers are still finishing blooming, so go early to catch a golden expanse, and the air is filled with the scent of pollen.
📍 The rapeseed flower fields of Ji'an are located along the Yalu River. Just walk along the riverbank and you'll see vast fields of flowers. The entrance fee is reasonable, and students get an additional 50% discount. The Koguryo relics are located south of the city center. A taxi ride costs around ten RMB. Don't believe the "day trip" offers on the street; you can easily explore on your own.
🍜 Lunch is in Ji'an city center. Cold noodles and barbecue are the standard fare, and you can eat your fill for about 30 RMB per person.
⚠️ The Goguryeo ruins close at 4 PM. Don't arrive right on time; there's plenty of walking space inside, so allow at least two hours.
⏰ In the morning, see the flower fields first—the light is soft, perfect for photos without backlighting. Then visit the historical sites in the afternoon; the route is convenient and efficient. Choose accommodation near the train station; you can find clean standard rooms for under 100 yuan, and it'll be convenient for catching your train the next day.
02 Shangrao City | Jiangxi
Sanqingshan, Wuyuan Jiangwan, Guifeng, Huangling—if you put these names together, I strongly recommend at least three days. But there are ways to travel on a budget.
🚄 Take the high-speed train to Shangrao Station. There are shuttle buses to Sanqingshan and Wuyuan right outside the station, half the price of hiring a car. The entrance fee and cable car to Sanqingshan are the biggest expenses, but the mountain trails and the Giant Python Emerging from the Mountain are worth it. Don't skimp on this; hiking up is very tiring, and your legs will be exhausted by the afternoon.
📍 The autumn harvest in Huangling starts to turn vibrant colors at the end of September, with red peppers and yellow corn covering the eaves. The light is softest after 4:30 PM, and most of the crowds have dispersed. Wuyuan Jiangwan has a more rustic, village-like atmosphere, and the entrance fee is cheaper than Huangling, making it a good place to explore at a leisurely pace.
🍜 For dinner, we ate tofu stew and steamed pork with rice flour at the foot of Huangling Mountain; it cost about 40 RMB per person, enough to fill you up.
⚠️ Guifeng is far from the city center, so don't force it if you're short on time. Choose between Guifeng and Sanqingshan; I chose Sanqingshan because the landscape is more breathtaking.
I recommend staying in Wuyuan County. Hostel beds are 50 RMB per night, and it's convenient to share a ride to various attractions.
03 Panjin City | Liaoning
The Red Beach Scenic Corridor—the name alone is enough to entice me to make the trip. September and October are the peak season for the Suaeda salsa, making the entire mudflat look like it's been splashed with paint.
⏰ Arrive at the scenic area before 9 AM, when the tide has just receded and the red beach is at its most vibrant color. It darkens as the sun rises. There's a sightseeing bus along the corridor for 20 yuan round trip; don't skimp on it, as walking the entire way is too far, and you'll want to turn back halfway.
📍 At the end of the corridor, there's a viewing tower. Climbing it offers a better view of the boundary between the reed beds and the red beach, with much better photo opportunities than from the ground. I don't recommend the grilled dried fish sold in the scenic area; it's expensive and salty. Wait until you get back to the city to eat.
🍜 In Panjin city, just find a small restaurant; the river crabs are plump and delicious, and you can get a feast overflowing with roe for around 60 yuan per person.
⚠️ It's windy at the Red Beach, so bring a light jacket. Don't wear white shoes, as the mud splashes on the mudflats and is difficult to clean off.
For accommodation, choose a chain hotel in Xinglongtai District for around 100 yuan; it's close to the scenic area bus station.
04 Baoding City | Hebei Province
The Western Qing Tombs, Baishi Mountain, Yesanpo, and Baiyangdian Lake in Anxin County are scattered in different directions from Baoding, requiring a two-day, one-night trip that you'll have to reluctantly cut back on. Let me prioritize them for you.
🚄 Take the high-speed train from Beijing to Baoding East Station; the fastest journey is 40 minutes, perfect for a weekend trip. The Western Qing Tombs are in Yi County; the architectural complex is much quieter than the Eastern Qing Tombs, and the stone carvings and glazed tiles are exceptionally well-preserved. Those who love ancient architecture will be captivated.
📍 Baishi Mountain is in Laiyuan County. Its glass walkway is its signature feature, but those with a fear of heights shouldn't attempt it. A walk around the foot of the mountain also offers panoramic views of the peaks. Yesanpo is more suitable for families with children; the rafting and caves will keep kids entertained, and adults can cool off.
⚠️ I advise against visiting Baiyangdian Lake in autumn. The reeds turn yellow, the lotus flowers fade, and boat tours become more expensive, making it poor value for money. If you want to experience a water town, save that half-day and spend more time at Baishi Mountain.
🍜 Donkey meat sandwiches with millet porridge in Baoding city center, about 25 yuan per person, you'll be stuffed. Choose accommodation near Baoding Railway Station; budget hotels are around 80 yuan a night, so you won't be in a rush to return the next day.
05 Daxinganling Region | Heilongjiang
The Beiji Village tourist area and the Daxinganling forest scenery together perfectly capture "what autumn should look like." From mid-September, the larch trees turn yellow, turning the entire mountainside into a golden landscape.
📍 Beiji Village is in Mohe. The northernmost post office and outpost are popular photo spots, but don't just focus on the village entrance. Walk towards the river; the opposite bank reveals Russian forests, which look like an ink painting when the morning mist rises. The Daxinganling region is much larger; driving or hiring a car along the forest roads offers scenic views everywhere.
⏰ The best time for autumn colors is from September 20th to October 5th. After that, the leaves have all fallen, leaving only bare branches. The temperature difference between day and night is significant, so a down jacket is a must. A sweatshirt is fine for midday sunshine; don't let the temperature difference fool you.
🚄 There are shuttle buses from Mohe Railway Station to Beiji Village for 25 yuan per person. Chartering a car costs 150 yuan, so don't be ripped off.
🍜 The stewed river fish and stir-fried mushrooms with meat at the village restaurants cost around 50 yuan per person, and the taste is excellent.
⚠️ Book your accommodation in advance. The peak season in Beiji Village lasts only two weeks. Wooden cabins inns cost 150 yuan per night; if you book late, there will either be no rooms available or the price will double. If your budget is limited, stay in Mohe County, which is half the price, and then take a shuttle bus in the morning.
06 Yuxi City|Yunnan
Fuxian Lake and the Ailao Mountains—one like the sea, the other like mountains—Yuxi's autumn embodies both qualities.
📍 Fuxian Lake is located in Chengjiang County. The water is so clear you can see the stones at the bottom. Cycling around the lake is the best way to experience it. The entrance fee to Luchong Scenic Area is 15 yuan. The beach and boardwalk inside are enough to spend half a day exploring, which is more cost-effective than taking a boat tour, which costs 80 yuan per hour and is incredibly windy.
🍜 A copper pot fish stew with potato rice by the lake costs about 45 yuan per person. The fish soup is incredibly delicious. Don't order the large fish; a little over a pound is enough for two people.
⏰ Arrive at the lake after 4 pm. The sunlight shines obliquely on the water, creating a shimmering effect. No filters are needed for photos.
The Ailao Mountains are more suitable for those driving. Shimen Gorge and the Ancient Tea Horse Road are hidden in the mountains; the roads are narrow and winding, so novice drivers should be cautious.
⚠️ Signal is weak on the mountain. Download offline maps in advance; don't drive down in the dark.
Choose a guesthouse on the east bank of Fuxian Lake for 80 yuan a night with a lake view. It's cheaper than on the west bank, and you can see the sunrise when you open the curtains in the morning.
07 Yulin City | Shaanxi
Wave Valley, Jiaxian Yellow River, and Red Stone Gorge – these three places together create the "desolate aesthetics of northern Shaanxi." September and October offer dry weather, perfect for exploring these expansive landscapes.
📍 Wave Valley is located in Jingbian County. The Danxia landforms are a vibrant red, and the boardwalks are well-maintained, allowing you to walk without a guide.
⚠️ Don't trust the women at the entrance who offer to "take you on unpaved paths." They charge you money, and you could easily slip and fall in places without guardrails.
⏰ Enter the valley at 8 am when the sunlight is at an angle, revealing the deepest red rock formations. At midday, direct sunlight obscures the view, leaving only a white expanse. Jiaxian Yellow River is near Xianglu Temple. The river water is greenish this season, which doesn't quite match the "yellow" in its name, but the canyon's grandeur is still impressive.
🍜 In Yulin city, try mutton noodles with fried dough twists (油旋). It costs around 30 RMB per person. The mutton is stewed until tender, and the broth is rich and flavorful. Hongshixia Gorge is close to the city center. With its cliff carvings and red rocks and green waters, two hours is enough to explore. The entrance fee is 30 yuan; don't spend 60 yuan on a guided tour—it's more interesting to see it on your own.
For accommodation, choose Yulin Old Town; hotels are 80 yuan a night, and you can stroll around and see the ancient city wall in the evening.
08 Hohhot City | Inner Mongolia
Laoniuwan Yellow River Grand Canyon and Chulechuan Grassland Cultural Tourism Area: one for water, the other for grassland. Hohhot's autumn combines nomadic and agricultural life.
📍 Laoniuwan is located in Qingshuihe, where the Yellow River makes a large bend. The banks are steep earthen cliffs; standing on the viewing platform and looking down will make your legs weak, but the view is breathtaking.
🚄 It takes two and a half hours to get there from Hohhot city center. It's recommended to hire a car or share a ride; it costs about 60 yuan per person one way, more flexible than taking a bus.
⏰ Chulechuan Grassland is close to the city center, just off the G6 expressway. In autumn, the grass turns golden, and the wind makes it look like waves. The scenic area offers yurts and horseback riding. A ride costs 80 yuan per lap; just take a photo if you want to experience it, don't overdo it.
🍜 In the Hui Muslim district of the city, try the shaomai (steamed dumplings) and milk tea. It costs about 35 yuan per person. The mutton shaomai has a thin skin and a generous filling, bursting with juice in every bite.
⚠️ It's windy at Laoniu Bay, so make sure your hat is tied tightly, or you might get blown into the Yellow River.
Choose accommodation near the train station; hostel beds are 60 yuan per night, convenient for going to the grasslands or returning the next day. To save on entrance fees, Laoniu Bay scenic area is free after 5 pm, with perfect lighting for sunset, but it gets dark when you leave, so don't go alone.
These eight places can be visited on a budget of 500 to 800 yuan. Tonghua and Yuxi are suitable for leisurely eating and drinking, while the Greater Khingan Mountains and Yulin are perfect for those chasing autumn colors. Do you have your answer yet? Share in the comments which one you'd most like to visit first.

⚠️ It's windy at the Red Beach, so bring a light jacket. Don't wear white shoes; the mud splashes on the mudflats and is very difficult to clean.
For accommodation, choose Xinglongtai District; chain hotels are around 100 RMB and close to the scenic area bus station.
