The place itself has a very casual, local street-side setup. There’s an indoor counter area, but most of the experience spills outdoors — low stools and small tables lined along the roadside, with people sitting shoulder to shoulder as clay pots arrive steaming from the kitchen. It’s the kind of setup where you’re basically eating right in the flow of the street, which adds to the atmosphere. Everything comes in bubbling earthenware pots that stay hot throughout the meal, keeping the broth consistently aromatic. I've visited these 8 small cities, and you can have a comfortable trip for just over 100 per day. Read on, pick one, and head out. 01 Shijiazhuang | Hebei First, the verdict: Shijiazhuang isn't just a transit hub; it's worth a two-day trip on its own. ⏰ Late September to mid-October is the most comfortable time. It's cool in the morning and evening, sunny at noon, so a light jacket is perfect. 📍 Zhaozhou Bridge is about an hour's drive from the city center. Go in the morning for the best light to photograph the bridge's reflection. The bridge itself isn't large, so an hour is enough. Don't get scammed by the "guided tour packages" offered at the entrance; reading the inscriptions yourself is more interesting. 🚄 Take a high-speed train from Shijiazhuang Station to Zhengding, then transfer to a bus to Xibaipo. The whole trip takes about two hours. Xibaipo is free, but you need to book in advance via their official WeChat account. ⚠️ It's closed on Mondays, so don't make a wasted trip. For food, small eateries around Huaian Road in the city center can fill you up for about 20 per person. Donkey meat burgers with millet porridge are the standard. The weather in October is perfect, making it easy to walk around. 05 Shuozhou | Shanxi Shuozhou is so off the beaten path that many people haven't heard of it, but Shahukou is worth a trip. ⏰ Go in late September when the sky is high and the clouds are light. Standing at the pass looking at the ruins of the Great Wall, the wind is strong enough to blow your worries away. 📍 Shahukou is in Youyu County, is free to enter, and takes two hours to explore. ⚠️ There are few places to eat nearby, so bring your own food. 🚄 There are shuttle buses from Shuozhou Station to Youyu, then take a taxi. Stay in a hotel in Shuozhou city for around 100, and eat a bowl of knife-cut noodles for 8. Suitable for those who like a sense of wilderness and history. Consider carefully if bringing seniors, as it's windy and far. 06 Xianning | Hubei The Chibi Ancient Battlefield in Xianning is perfect in September; the summer heat has faded, and the river breeze is cool. ⏰ Go in the morning when it's less crowded, so you can take your time looking at the cliff carvings. 📍 The replica ancient warships and sculpture groups in the scenic area are great for photos, but ⚠️ don't buy the "commemorative coins" sold at the entrance; they aren't worth it. 🚄 A taxi from Chibi North Station costs about 30. Mugecuo is close to Kangding, and 🚄 there are shuttle buses from Kangding Bus Station. Admission plus sightseeing bus tickets for Daocheng Yading aren't cheap. If you're on a tight budget, choose Hailuogou, where you can experience both glaciers and hot springs. 📍 Accommodation in Moxi Town, Hailuogou, is around 150, and yak meat hot pot is about 60 per person.
