Highlights of the Old City When visiting Baoding with kids, the Old City is definitely the main attraction, and all the sights are close together, so no need to take a car. The Zhili Governor’s Office is a must-visit; it’s the only well-preserved provincial government office from the Qing Dynasty in the country. The architecture inside is very impressive. Take the kids to see what an ancient government office looked like and tell them the story of the "Three Halls Trial"—it’s very educational. Right next door is the Ancient Lotus Pond, a garden that really exceeded expectations. Although it’s not large, every step reveals a new scene: rockeries, ponds, pavilions, and towers are all exquisitely crafted. In summer, the pond is full of lotus flowers; in autumn, leaves gently fall. Each season has its own unique beauty. Feed the koi fish with the kids and rest in the long corridor—it’s very relaxing. The Baoding Water Conservancy Museum is also nearby and free to enter. It offers various water conservation knowledge exhibits and interactive experiences where kids can operate devices themselves to learn about the mysteries of water. It’s much more interesting than reading books. For lunch nearby, we recommend Baiyunzhang Baozi, a long-established Baoding brand. The buns have thin skin and generous filling, costing 15 yuan per basket. Also try the beef soup pancake, 18 yuan a bowl, with fresh broth and tender meat—kids love it. Family-Friendly Places to Explore A visit to Baoding Wild Animal World is a must. They have giant pandas! They are so adorable that the kids stayed glued to the glass for over half an hour. There are also various wild animals like tigers, lions, and giraffes. You can feed the small animals, making it very interactive. Tickets cost 80 yuan, and you can easily spend a whole day there. The Baoding Science and Technology Exhibition Center is another great place for kids. It’s free and features various science exhibits, aerospace models, robots, physics experiments, and a children’s interactive area where kids can learn by doing—perfect for school-age children. If your kids like water activities, in summer you can go to Baiyangdian Lake and charter a boat to tour the reed marshes to experience the water town scenery. In winter, visit Langyashan Ski Resort for skiing and snow play. There’s something to do all year round. Food Guide That Won’t Disappoint Baoding’s food is really friendly—affordable and delicious, so you won’t feel guilty feeding the kids. Donkey meat sandwiches are a must-try. We recommend Yanjia Donkey Meat, an old shop with authentic flavor, 8 yuan each, with crispy crust and plenty of filling. Also try donkey meat sandwiches with a latte—this trendy combo is surprisingly good! Xidajie Street has many cafes with nice atmospheres, perfect for resting after walking around. Zhili Anjia Beef Soup Pancake is also a must-eat. The soup is rich and flavorful, and the pancake soaks up all the broth—delicious and filling, with an average cost of 20 yuan per person. Also try Tanghe Cold Noodles, 5 yuan a bowl, refreshing and perfect for summer. Practical Tips Transportation: Baoding East Station high-speed rail is very convenient. Taxis in the city are cheap, with a starting fare of 8 yuan. Most attractions are within the starting fare distance. Tickets: Many museums are free but remember to book in advance. Children under 1.4 meters are generally free. Best Time to Visit: Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. Summer can be hot, and winter is great for skiing.
