At that time, Zhang Yuanji, a figure of the Hundred Days' Reform and a Hanlin scholar, was in charge of the editing work at the Commercial Press. Frustrated by the lack of good rare books, he founded Hanyinlou, which means 'a place filled with the fragrance of rare books and knowledge'. In 1909, it was officially named Hanyinlou. Hanyinlou started by collecting rare ancient books and then expanded to include both Chinese and foreign books. Whenever private collections were dispersed, Hanyinlou made every effort to acquire them. It also purchased new books published annually in Japan and Western countries.
