Fuxian Lake is located between Chengjiang County, Jiangchuan County, and Huaning County in Yuxi City, Yunnan Province, more than 60 kilometers away from Kunming. The lake covers an area of 212 square kilometers, making it the third-largest lake in Yunnan Province after Dianchi and Erhai. It reaches a depth of 155 meters, making it one of the deeper lakes in Yunnan Province. Besides the volcanic crater lake in the northeast Changbai Mountains—Tianchi, Fuxian Lake is the second deepest known lake in China. Fuxian Lake is a north-south fault dissolution lake, shaped like an inverted gourd. It is wide and deep in the north, narrow and shallow in the south, and constricted in the middle. The lake's surface elevation is 1722.5 meters, the area is 216.6 square kilometers, the volume is 20.62 billion cubic meters, the average depth of the lake water is 95.2 meters, and the deepest point is 158.9 meters. It holds a volume of water equivalent to 12 Dianchi Lakes, 6 times that of Erhai Lake, 4.5 times that of Tai Lake, accounting for 72.8% of the total storage capacity of Yunnan's nine major plateau lakes, and 9.16% of the storage capacity of the country's freshwater lakes.
