Wat Umong, among the over 300 temples in Chiang Mai, exudes a unique aura

The revered monks believe that forests are more suitable for spiritual practice than temples. Nestled at the foot of Doi Suthep, Wat Umong is hidden in the woods, offering a world of serene tranquility and rustic charm. 'Umong' means 'tunnel' in Thai, and this secluded temple has a history of 700 years, also known as Wat U Mong. It is Mr. Jiang Xun's favorite temple in Chiang Mai, which he aptly named 'Temple of No Dreams', reflecting its spirit of simplicity and desirelessness. With a humble heart, walking into the tunnel in slippers, one can faintly hear the sound of dripping water. Some caves are so low that one must bow and hunch to pass through, and the triangular niches carved into the walls on both sides of the tunnel have been blackened by candle smoke. Bats hang upside down from the cave ceiling, listening to the devotees' confessions to the Buddha statues. This primitive simplicity is solemn and serene. Upon entering the Wat Umong area, please slow down and lower your voice, as the atmosphere of Buddhist studies is intense here, with many foreign practitioners coming to meditate. Some meditate under the shade of trees, while a flock of free-range chickens passes by in front of them. Wat Umong is not grandiose, but it covers a considerable area, with a library, art gallery, science center, and more. Walking on the moss-covered paths, everywhere you look are traces of years and time.
