The East Jiguan Mountain Fortress in Lushun was an important fortress built by the Russians in January 1900 after they occupied Lushun in 1898. It was one of the key battlefields during the Russo-Japanese War. The fortress was built by the Russians in January 1900 using concrete and cobblestones. The exterior was covered with 2-meter-thick sandbags and soil. The interior was complex, consisting of a command post, soldiers' quarters, ammunition depot, bunkers, side defense bunkers, artillery positions, minefields, stairwells, and more. The fortress was an irregular pentagon with a perimeter of 496 meters and an area of 9,900 square meters. A 6-meter-deep and 8-meter-wide moat surrounded the fortress, with high-voltage electric fences on the slopes outside. During the Russo-Japanese War in 1904, over 900 Japanese soldiers were killed or wounded while attacking this fortress. The site preserves relatively complete war relics: Russian trenches, Japanese blast holes, Russian ammunition depots, command posts, machine gun positions, the place where a Russian commander died, and a monument built by the Japanese after the war to boast about their victory. The Russo-Japanese War was a result of the conflict between Japanese imperialism's "continental policy" and Russia's "Far East policy." It was a war between two imperialist countries fighting for control over Northeast China, fought on Chinese soil. This is a history that should not be forgotten. The relics and artifacts of the war are not only evidence of the invaders' crimes but also reveal the immense suffering caused by war. Everything here tells us that backwardness leads to being bullied, and only a prosperous nation can make its people strong. Today, the East Jiguan Mountain Fortress Site of the Russo-Japanese War has become a classroom for patriotic education for the Chinese people. Remembering the past serves as a lesson for the future.
