Zili Village, a World Cultural Heritage Site

Zili Village is located in Tangkou Town, Kaiping City, Guangdong Province. It is under the jurisdiction of the Qiangya Village Committee of Tangkou Town and is one of the World Cultural Heritage sites and a national key cultural relic protection unit. Commonly known as Huangniling, it is 12 kilometers east of Kaiping City. It is composed of three natural villages with the surname Fang: Anheli (commonly known as Litouzui), Heanli (commonly known as Xincun), and Yong'anli (commonly known as Huangniling). Zili Village has 9 watchtowers and 6 villas (Western-style villas), including Longsheng Tower, Yangxian Villa, Qiu'anjulou, Ju'an Tower, Yaoguang Villa, Yunhuan Tower, Zhulin Tower, Zhen'an Tower, Mingshi Tower, Anlu, Yinong Tower, Yeshengjulou, Guanshengjulou, Lanshengjulou, and Zhanlu. The earliest Longsheng Tower was built in the 8th year of the Republic of China (1919), and the latest Zhanlu was built in the 37th year of the Republic of China (1948). Among them, the most exquisite is the 6-story Mingshi Tower. From the architectural features of the watchtowers, such as thick concrete brick walls, iron plate windows and doors, and gun holes, it can be seen that in the 1920s, due to rampant banditry and frequent floods, some overseas Chinese and compatriots from Hong Kong and Macau used part of their savings to build watchtowers and villas, showcasing the wisdom of overseas Chinese.
