Koh Samui's majestic Big Buddha

Whichever part of Thailand you find yourself in, you'll come across temples, altars, and statues of Buddha. Many places in Thailand are famous for their "Big Buddha" statues/complexes, and Koh Samui has its own as well. Though not as big as Phuket's, it is still imposing (12m tall!), majestic, and offers stunning views of the whole island. Situated in the northeast of the island, Wat Phra Yai (lit. Big Buddha Temple) offers its own shopping area at the foot of the stairs leading up to the statue. At its base are also many altars and stalls selling amulets and alms to sustain the monks living there. Although this was built in 1972, it was only recently that the statue had a Buddhist wheel of life installed on its back - and it looks amazing. Although you won't need a full day to visit this Big Buddha, it's definitely a must-see in Samui. Locals have also mentioned that the sunset is stunning from here - so go at that timing!
