Step back in time to a French-style Vietnam on Huashan South Road.

Nanlaisheng Cafe is located on Huashan South Road, right next to Ho Chi Minh's former residence. It was originally founded in the 1930s by a Vietnamese woman named Nguyen Minxuan. Her husband, Feng Yuyan, was the stationmaster of Kunming Station on the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway, which gave her the opportunity to bring Vietnamese food culture to Kunming and open this French-style restaurant on Jinbi Road, which was then called "New Vietnam Restaurant." Later, in 1956, it was renamed "Nanlaisheng" after the public-private partnership. Nanlaisheng's food is very distinctive. The Vietnamese rice rolls here are soft and glutinous, with a rich filling and special dipping sauce, making every bite unforgettable. The roast pork has a crispy skin and tender, juicy meat, with a rich aroma. Annam bread, or hard-shell French bread, is one of the restaurant's specialties. The bread has a hard crust but is soft and chewy inside. Whether eaten directly, spread with jam or butter, or paired with Yunnan's special "fermented tofu" (a pickled product), it has a unique flavor. Coffee is also a classic drink at Nanlaisheng, made from carefully ground and brewed high-quality Vietnamese coffee beans, with a rich aroma and mellow taste that is intoxicating. Over the course of history, Nanlaisheng has attracted many celebrities. Patriotic overseas Chinese Chen Jiageng was a regular here, Shen Congwen entertained Hu Shi here, and Zhou Enlai also drank coffee here, saying that the taste was no different from when he studied in France as a young man. Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh once worked here as a baker, actively working for the Vietnamese revolutionary cause. Later, with the transformation and change of Kunming city, Nanlaisheng was relocated several times. Although today's Nanlaisheng is no longer as glorious as it once was, it is still an important representative of Kunming's food culture, carrying the fond memories of old Kunming people.
