The first building within the nationally protected Liu Family Residence is the Guandi Temple, built on a small hill. Both Guan Yu and the Liu family ancestor hail from Hedong, so the Guandi Temple became the Wang Temple of Xiwengxing Village and was constructed in the most prominent location at the village entrance. The exact founding date of the Guandi Temple is unknown, but according to the "Stele Inscription for the Renovation of Guandi Temple" from the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, the temple was rebuilt in 1559, with an earlier original construction date. It underwent several renovations during the Qing Dynasty. The Guandi Temple mainly consists of a gate tower, opera stage, main hall, and side viewing towers, still preserving the style and structure of the Ming Dynasty to this day.

Although there are thousands of Guan Di Temples, the one in Jiezhou is the oldest, largest, highest-ranking, and best-preserved, covering a total area of 220,000 square meters. It truly deserves its title as the "Ancestor of Guan Temples"👍 The temple is divided into two parts: the Jieyi Garden and the main temple. The main temple has a complete layout, with the front hall and the rear palace. Along the central axis are the screen wall, Duan Gate, Zhi Gate, Wu Gate, Yushu Tower, Chongning Tower, and Chunqiu Tower. On both sides, there are bell and drum towers, stele pavilions, and corridors. A popular photo spot is the horizontal plaque with the inscription "Shen Yong" (Divine Valor), written by Emperor Qianlong. The matching fridge magnets were sold out at the souvenir shop😭, but luckily, I found one at the Yuncheng Museum. However, the quality wasn't great for 38 RMB, so buy with caution. Guan Di Temple boasts two beautiful caissons, one in Yushu Tower and the other in Chunqiu Tower. The chrysanthemum caisson in Chunqiu Tower is truly breathtaking👏 There's a fee to go upstairs, but it's worth it‼️

The pit courtyard is the earliest cave dwelling, and its exact origin is unknown. Pinglu County in Shanxi Province currently has the most pit courtyards in the southern Shanxi region, and some of them are still inhabited. According to records, the pit courtyard is a unique dwelling that has existed for over 4,000 years. It originated from the ancient cave dwelling style and is generally buried more than ten meters underground. Experts describe it as an "underground courtyard." |Does this look like the illustrations in your elementary school textbooks? To the east of Sanmen Village, Sanmen Town, there is a Mitang Valley. Legend has it that when Dayu was controlling the flood, he passed by his home three times but never entered. Dayu's mother missed her son very much, so she asked her daughter-in-law, Yu Niangniang, to take care of Dayu. Niangniang felt sorry for him, so she delivered meals to the river every day. One day, a group of dung beetles were pushing dung balls when a gust of wind blew the dung balls onto the big drum by the river, making a deafening noise. Dayu heard the drum and thought there was an emergency at home, so he hurried up the mountain. At the same time, Niangniang also heard the drum and was very surprised. She thought Dayu was hungry and was urging her to deliver meals, so she hurriedly put red bean rice soup into a clay pot and ran down the mountain. When she reached the valley, she accidentally got the pot caught on a jujube thorn by the roadside. Her body shook, and the rice soup spilled all over the valley. Since then, the slopes of the valley have turned red like red beans. Whenever it rains, there is thick red water everywhere, which people call "Mitang Valley." Mitang Valley has a variety of red earth platforms, earth pillars, earth cliffs, earth ridges, and other unique landforms. |Explore the traces of ancient people’s wisdom. The Yuban Ancient Salt Road was first dug in the early Western Zhou Dynasty and was not abandoned until the early 1950s. This is only a documentary record, but in fact our ancestors have a long history of transporting salt, and the legend of "Yu digging Yuban" has been circulating in Pinglu. In ancient times, there were no advanced tools. In order to chisel away the hard bluestone, Dayu directed people to use both water and fire. They burned alum, salt and saltpeter from the salt pond on the stone, then extinguished it with water. After the stone cracked, they chiseled it away layer by layer. The principle of thermal expansion and contraction is used. Walking along the rugged mountain path, you will see lush greenery on both sides and the fresh fragrance of plants. Underfoot are deep horse hoof pits and ruts left by the long-term rolling of wooden carts. Through these historical traces, people today seem to see the bustling scene of salt transportation on the ancient road. There is a broken stone on the side of the road with the words "Qingshicao" written on it. Qingshicao is also the common name of the Yuban Ancient Salt Road. The whole road is very narrow, with a cliff on one side and a mountain on the other. The road was dug out from the hard rock. The chisel marks on the bluestone are very clear, which is the testimony to the wisdom of our ancestors. |The Site of the "Jia Tu Mie Guo" Battle. Maodu was originally called Maotou Ferry, then renamed Shajian Ferry, and finally Maodu. It has been known as the "Iron Wharf" since the Shang Dynasty, and has been a ferry since then. It developed rapidly after the Zhou Dynasty. According to records, Maodu was already a ferry during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, and was a strategic location for military operations. In 655 BC, Duke Xian of Jin borrowed the road from Yu to attack and destroy the State of Guo, crossing the river at Maodu. In 627 BC, Duke Mu of Qin attacked Zheng, and the State of Jin sent surprise troops across the river at Maodu, defeating the Qin army at Xiaoshan. Pinglu County is located at the southernmost tip of Shanxi Province. The caisson inside the Guandi Temple is not the common upward bulging well shape, but an inverted floral column made of more than 200 pieces of wood interlaced in a mortise and tenon structure, resembling a blooming chrysanthemum hanging upside down above the beams. The petals stretch out, blooming to their fullest, extremely beautiful. It is said that there used to be a mechanism to rotate the petals, but for preservation, it is now immovable. Yuncheng Quanzhang Guandi Temple A somewhat 'terrifying' Guandi Temple I discovered this Guandi Temple after visiting the Baitai Temple and looking for food in the town. It is a national heritage site from the Ming Dynasty. This building with a width of five rooms and a double-eaved hipped roof looks ordinary at first glance, but it's full of wonders inside, especially those 20 coiled dragon pillars, which are solemn and terrifying. The dragons' claws are holding fish (with human faces), turtles, and even human heads. These people all have their hair done up in buns, wearing earrings, with cherry-like small mouths and bound feet. There are young women as well as old women over the age of sixty... 🏯 About Guandi Temple The temple was initially built during the Yuan Dynasty, and the main hall is a relic from the Ming Dynasty, with a plaque hanging above that reads 'Wu Sheng'. It is built on a brick and stone base that is 0.9 meters high, with five bays in both width and depth, and has a nearly square floor plan with a double-eaved hipped roof. The main body has three bays, surrounded by subsidiary steps. The upper eaves brackets are of a five-stepped double-lowered ang type, with the main bay featuring 45-degree slanting ang. The lower eaves brackets are of a three-stepped single-tilted heart-shaped design. Under the eaves of the main hall of the Quanzhang Guandi Temple, there are 20 coiled dragon stone columns, 11 of which are relief coiled dragon columns, and the other 9 are shallow flat-carved dragon columns, with all column heads featuring inverted-basin-style volutes. Uniquely, each column is adorned with dragons' claws grasping human heads, legs, fish, turtles, etc. In front of the hall, there are 11 Ming and Qing dynasty stone lions preserved. These are masterpieces of ancient Chinese stone carving art. The temple is a national key cultural relics protection unit.
