Rethymno Old Town - Crete Island, Greece

The old city of Rethymno is located in the center of the modern city and features a rather unique combination of Venetian and Cretan architecture. Rethymno was founded in 1204 after the Venetians conquered Crete. It is this fact that explains why most of the remaining buildings in the old part of the city are built in the Venetian style. The narrow streets of the Old Town and its small Venetian harbor are perfect for walking, shopping, dining in a small restaurant and getting to know the wonderful local architecture. The main attraction of the city is the Fortezza castle. It was built in 1590 and is located on a low hill in the center of Rethymno.
