Not Just Space.. Church Near the Bund.

Shanghai's original Union Church, also known as the Union Chapel, is located at 107 South Suzhou Road. This church was built in 1886 and was designed by British architect William Dowdall, one of the few members of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in Shanghai at the time. The building adopts a Gothic Revival style overall, featuring a double-cross structure, with alternating blue and red bricks on the exterior, showcasing the typical appearance of Roman church architecture. Union Church was once a famous expatriate church in Shanghai, primarily providing religious services to non-Anglican congregants. At the center of the church stands a 33-meter-high bell tower with a sharp spire, making it a well-known landmark in the Bund area. There are chapels on both the east and west sides of the church, offering a total capacity of 500 to 600 people. Unfortunately, the church suffered significant damage from several fires, particularly the major fire in 2007, which almost completely destroyed it. However, it was restored in time for the 2010 Shanghai Expo, and since its restoration, it has become a popular spot for wedding photography. Although the west chapel was not restored to its original state, the overall exterior has been well preserved, continuing to operate while retaining its faith and memories. Shanghai's original Union Church is more than just a historical building; it has become an important part of the city's culture, attracting many tourists and worshippers who come to pray.
