Isola Bella Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
Isola Bella is one of the Borromean Islands, about 400 metres off Stresa, and can be reached in a few minutes from Verbania, Baveno, Stresa and Arona.
The island is a natural treasure made even richer by human intervention; it has always been one of the favourite visitor attractions of Lake Maggiore, not to be missed if you want unparalleled views of the lake and its surroundings. Isola Bella is dominated by its sumptuous Baroque palace, along with a luxuriant Italian-style garden, which reaches a height of 37 metres and is laid out on ten terraces. Many parts of the palace are open to visitors: richly furnished rooms and opulent salons embellished with priceless artworks.
The garden is full of flowers and exotic plants of great rarity, which grow thanks to the particularly mild climate of the Borromean Gulf. Everything on the island has been designed to create a scenic effect, including the “Theatre” constructed at the end of the superimposed terraces, dominated by a statue of a Unicorn, the heraldic emblem of the Borromeos, which is flanked by statues representing Nature and Art. The huge, extraordinary garden is further decorated with ponds, fountains and a plethora of statues dating from the second half of the 17th century. The white peacocks that wander over the manicured lawns add their grace to this enchanting spot.
Adjacent to the palace and the gardens is part of the village which used to occupy the island, with some restaurants and souvenir shops.

Italy|Known as "God's Back Garden"
|Known as "God's Back Garden". A complete guide to Isola Bella can easily achieve a day trip around Milan
1 Depart from Milano Centrale Station to Stresa, which takes about 1h, with a round-trip ticket costing 17 euros.
2 Get off at Stresa, use Google Maps to locate Carciano, and you'll find the boat ticket office, with two options (a round-trip to Bella Island for 10 euros per person, or a three-island pass for 15 euros per person, which includes Madre, Pescatori, and Bella). Personally, I think the three-island pass is more cost-effective
3 Three-Island Pass Lido: Once you have the pass, look for boats with the Lido sign. They will take you to the first stop, Madre, then to Pescatori, and finally to Bella Island. (Note: For the return trip, you must also find a boat with the Lido sign)
4 Personal recommendation: Madre and Bella Islands are truly worth visiting. Madre Island has both a botanical garden and animals, great for photography. Pescatori Island is mostly for dining and shopping (recommend trying the grapefruit and lemon candies, 6 euros per pack). No need to say much about Bella Island!! Please see the picture above (Regarding tickets: both Madre and Bella Islands require tickets for visiting, a combined ticket for both islands is 34 euros, which I personally recommend)
Backyard of God, Isola Bella ❤️😍
#europetrip
Italy's I&A, known as the "backyard of God, isola Bella attack strategy, can fully achieve a one-day tour around Milan. 1. Departing from Milano Central, a Stresa takes about 1 hour, and the ticket price is around 17 euros for a round trip. 2. Getting off from Stresa, and locating yourself in Carciano on Google Maps. Even if you can see a ticket seller, there are two options (one is a round-trip 10 euros/person for Bella Island, and the other is a transportation ticket for three islands, including Madre, Pescatori, and Bella). Personally, I feel that the transportation tickets for the three islands are cost-effective. 3. Transportation tickets for the three islands. Lido: Buy a ticket. You need to find a boat with the Lido logo on board, and they will take you to the first stop, Madre, followed by Pescatori, and finally Bella Island. (Note: you need to find a boat with the Lido logo for round-trip travel) Four people recommend Madre and Bella Island. These two islands are really worth visiting. Madre Island is a place with both botanical gardens and animals. Take a photo and you'll see that Pescatori Island is mostly for eating and selling (we recommend 6 euros per pack of grapefruit and lemon sugar). Bella Island goes without saying much!! Please see the map above (for admission: Madre and Bella). Both islands require tickets to visit, and transportation tickets for both islands are limited

Mt Etna Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
I have been longing for an active volcano since I was a child, and I hope that one day I will stand in the crater to see the spectacular scene of magma eruption. Mount Etna in Sicily can be said to be a famous volcano in Italy. It is also very famous throughout Europe. If you have the opportunity to come to Sicily, you should be able to check it out.
I still remember, not long ago, the Internet was full of news about the eruption of Mount Etna. What attracted me at that time was not so much the thrill of it as it continued to erupt, but rather the surprise and carnival that people were eager to see.
Ah, Taormina, that is a dreamy paradise town hidden in the beautiful Mediterranean, hehe
Wow😮! Taormina, that is indeed a dreamy paradise town hidden in the beautiful Mediterranean, hehe😉! Some say that if you haven't been to Sicily, it's like you haven't really been to Italy. Wow, this place is just like a fairy tale brought to life: the ancient Greek theatre🎭 perched atop the cliffs, the misty highest active volcano in Europe🌋, the crystal-clear azure Mediterranean Sea🌊, and the ancient towns nestled in the mountain ridges, all of these can be found right here in the small town of Taormina~
🌋【Let's talk about Taormina】
🎈Taormina is located on the east coast of Sicily, on one side there is the vast and blue-toned Ionian Sea with its charming maritime scenery😃, and on the other side, there is the magnificent mountain view of Mount Etna😍.
🎨This place is a magical land that has given birth to many poets and painters, and the famous 'The Big Blue' had its main outdoor scenes shot in Taormina.
✨The French writer Guy de Maupassant once said: 'If someone could only stay in Sicily for one day, and then he asks: Where should I go to visit? I would tell him without hesitation, Taormina. This little village seems to be just a small landscape, but everything in it can deeply indulge your vision, spirit, and imagination, and you can enjoy it to the fullest.'
📍Greek Theatre (Teatro Greco): Wow, it has a long history of 2300 years, it's that typical U-shaped theatre, standing there, it feels like you're in a super big bird's nest suspended between the sky and the sea🕊. When you look from the top of the theatre, the near view is the ancient theatre ruins that have been washed by the years for 2300 years, the middle view is the medieval town on the mountainside and the castle on the mountain, and the far view is the vast sea and the distant volcano.
📍Taormina Public Garden (Parco Civico): This is a great place for the citizens of Taormina to enjoy their leisure time, here you can deeply feel the local lifestyle.
📍Cathedral of San Nicolò (Cattedrale di San Nicolò): This is an ancient and solemn church near Taormina, with exquisite carvings and super beautiful murals inside, definitely a must-visit place for art lovers🎨.
📍Piazza IX Aprile: This is a super beautiful square, also a great viewpoint, where people gather and hold celebrations🎉. On one side of the square is the Taormina Church, built on the ruins of an ancient church in the 15th century with Norman-Arab architectural style, and on the other side is the Centaur Fountain full of Baroque style. Here, you can also have a panoramic view of Mount Etna.
📍Mount Etna (Etna): The highest active volcano in Europe, with an altitude of 3300 meters, where you can enjoy the super spectacular sunrise and sunset🌅.
📍Isola Bella, also called 'Beautiful Island', is in Lake Maggiore in northern Italy, and during low tide, you can walk over from the shallows.
📍Main Street (Corso Umberto): Here are ancient and charming buildings, exquisite churches, and intoxicating alleys. The whole street is filled with a strong medieval atmosphere, here you can appreciate the unique architectural style of Taormina, like Baroque and Gothic buildings, etc.
🎈Best Travel Time:
Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to November) are more suitable times😜, the weather is very mild, and there are relatively fewer tourists. Summer (June to August) is the peak tourist season, but the temperature will be higher, and there will be more people. Winter (December to March of the following year) the weather is colder, but you can enjoy the unique winter scenery.
🚗Transportation Guide:
- Airplane: You can fly to Catania Airport first, and then take public transportation or rent a car to Taormina.
- Train: There are trains from Catania to Taormina, but you need to transfer in Messina.
- Bus: There are direct buses to Taormina from both Catania and Messina.
🏨Accommodation Recommendations:
- City Center: Choose hotels or B&Bs close to the main attractions and shopping areas, so it's very convenient to get around.
- Near the Beach: If you like the beach, you can choose to stay in hotels or resorts near the beach.
- On the Mountain: Accommodations on the mountain offer beautiful sea views and panoramic views of the city, but you may need to walk or take transportation up and down the mountain.
🍝Food Recommendations:
- Pasta: Taormina has a variety of pasta, like Bolognese, seafood pasta, etc.
- Seafood: Because it's close to the Mediterranean, the seafood in Taormina is super fresh, you can try various seafood dishes.
- Ice Cream: Italian ice cream is very famous, and Taormina also has many delicious ice cream shops.
- Fruits: Sicily's fruits are super rich, like oranges, lemons, grapes, etc., you can taste fresh fruits and juices.
Morocco and Tunisia are truly deserving of their reputation as tourist and vacation destinations
After a flight of over two hours from Tunisia, you arrive in Turkey. From the air, the urban development of Tunisia is quite impressive (see photos 1, and 4-10). Flying over Sicily, you can see Mount Etna🌋, which I climbed in 2019. A year later, the volcano erupted . Passing by today, I see it's still smoking
Back at Istanbul Airport☕️, it's brilliantly lit ... I'm not sure if the strait I photographed from the air is the Bosporus (photo 14)
I'm feeling homesick, returning to Shanghai is always so familiar, warm, and wonderful. Shanghai Airport has undergone some small changes again, now you can see the real-time status of your luggage being transported from the plane you arrived on at the baggage claim area (photo 19)
Every trip is a beautiful memory
On the peak of Etna
The Funivia Etna, or Etna Cable Car, offers visitors a thrilling journey to the summit of Mount Etna, Europe's most active volcano. Situated on the eastern coast of Sicily, Italy, this cable car system provides a convenient and awe-inspiring way to experience the majestic beauty and geological wonders of the volcano.
Ascending from the southern slope of Etna, the cable car transports passengers to an altitude of approximately 2,500 meters (8,200 feet), providing panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the volcanic terrain below. From there, visitors can board off-road vehicles or hike to reach higher elevations and explore the moon-like landscapes of lava fields, craters, and steaming vents.
The Funivia Etna not only offers unparalleled access to the volcano's dramatic scenery but also provides insights into its geological significance and volcanic activity. The Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, Sicily, is a mesmerizing testament to the grandeur of ancient Greek architecture. My visit to this archaeological wonder left me in awe of the past and the enduring legacy of Greek civilization.
Strolling through the valley, I marveled at the remarkably preserved temples, each with its unique character and history. The Temple of Concordia, with its towering columns, stands as a symbol of classical beauty and perfection.

Ancient Theatre of Taormina Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
The ancient theatre is without question the most important feature for sight-seers in Taormina, also because for its very fortunate natural setting, with splendid view toward the Calabrian coast, the Ionian coast of Sicily and the spectacular cone of Etna.
The construction of the amphitheater starts probably by the Greeks around the third century. BC, at the time of Hiero II.
To allow the construction was necessary to remove manually from the mountain over 100,000 cubic meters of rock.
The plant was later renovated and expanded by the Romans, who inserted columns, statues and ingenious covers.
The Greek theatre of Taormina, who was born to accommodate dramatic performances or musical, it was transformed during the Roman times to make room for games and gladiatorial battles. This involved the expansion of the orchestra, which in Greek times was destined to the musicians, in order to be adapted to the new function arena.
The scene is the most important part that remains of the theater and preserves in part its original form. But nothing remains of his ornaments and columns. According to many scholars, the first order was made up of nine columns arranged in groups of three, while the second was formed by sixteen columns lowest equidistant. It is said that these columns arrived by sea to Villagonia, were then attached with ropes and pulled by hordes of slaves to the Theatre. During the Middle Ages most of these columns were removed to build palaces and embellish places of worship, including the Cathedral. The scene is obviously where the actors used to perform.

Italian recommendations
Just now there was a comment asking me when is the best time to go to Italy?
This is a question that cannot be answered.
In fact, based on Italy's own history, diverse landscapes, diverse cuisine, and its foundational position in Western civilization, I have always said that Italy is not just a country, but rather a universe in itself.
No matter what season you go, there are destinations suitable for travel.
To further elaborate, those who have only traveled to Milan, Rome, Florence, and Venice with a tour group are no different from those who have never been to Italy.
Traveling to Italy is not just a trip, it's called "Grand Tour" in countries other than Italy.
I'll just write a simple recommendation by month off the top of my head.
January,
From south to north, Italy has the Pantelleria island near Africa with a daytime temperature of 28 degrees, as well as the Dolomites ski resort with a temperature of minus 10 degrees (a UNESCO natural heritage site). In winter, it is also the season of opera, and you can hear top-notch opera performances in Italy's five major opera houses.
In all major cities, the least touristy season is suitable for visiting.
It's perfect to visit the filming location of "White Lotus Resort" in Taormina, Sicily. The sunshine is warm and there aren't many tourists.
Another great destination is the mountain city of Orvieto, a mountain city in Umbria. Stand in front of its cathedral and hold your breath. For dinner, try a dry white wine from the Umbrian wine region, paired with ham from Norcia in the same region.
Or head straight to the center and embark on a snow-seeking wolf adventure (with real wild wolves) in Parco della Majella, Abruzzo.
February,
Spring has arrived in the south, so of course we must go to Agrigento in Sicily, where the hills are covered in blooming almond blossoms. The almond blossoms surround ancient Greek temples, creating an extremely romantic scene.
The ski resort in alta Valtellina in northern Milan has excellent snow conditions and is suitable for visiting. This is the venue for most of the men's events in the next Winter Olympics, which in itself speaks to its charm. It is also suitable for shopping, and there is a tax-free valley.
Don't forget about Venice in February, Carnival is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
In Liguria, apart from the Cinque Terre, the place with fewer people is Portofino. Going there at this time, the hotel offers great value for money, and with the bright sunshine and mild temperature in February, you can enjoy the pleasure of fewer crowds.
Or head south to the heel of Italy and visit Castel del Monte, a world cultural heritage site in Bari.
March,
It's the wonderful season of Puglia region. The Baroque architecture of Lecce, the "Florence of the South", is waiting for you to explore.
The Taranto Archaeological Museum is a top-notch museum of European standard.
Baunei in Sardinia is a good season to enjoy food and sunshine.
April
At the beginning of the month, in Brenta Dolomiti, Madonna di Campiglio, one of the two high-end ski resorts in Italy, it's a good time for spring skiing and shopping.
In late April, spring has arrived in the Po River Plain. Why not visit the town of Modena and see the world's most expensive balsamic vinegar factory? And while you're there, taste the cooking of chef Massimo from Osteria Francescana, once ranked as the world's number one restaurant.
Or take a slow train from Milan, arrive in Tirano in two hours, then transfer to the small red train Bernina Express that I have always recommended before, and head to St. Moritz in Switzerland. At this moment, the snow on the mountain has not melted yet. This is one of the most beautiful train routes in the world and also a UNESCO cultural heritage site.
At the same time, the warm south is already beautiful beyond words, Naples is waiting for you. The story of "My Brilliant Friend" takes place here. The world's best pizza is also here.
Explored enough of Naples city, let's return to Sorrento.
May
In May, Veneto is the transition between spring and early summer, and it is also a good time to visit Vicenza.
This is the City of Paladins, needless to say, it is the Mecca of all architecture enthusiasts in the world.
There are too many things to see nearby, the botanical garden of the University of Padua was established in the 16th century, the flowers are in full bloom, and it is another UNESCO cultural heritage site.
Then drive two hours to Cortina, one of the host cities of the 2026 Winter Olympics, the queen of the Dolomites, and the badass place for all mountain sports in the world. The locals here are not only good at skiing, but also the first ones in the world to conquer K2.
June
Italy is suitable for travel throughout the country. The peak season of July and August has not yet arrived, and the Alps are already in full bloom. The Ionian Sea in the south is warm enough for swimming.
But please let me recommend, I still recommend the town of Gubbio in the Umbria region, where you can take a cute cable car like a birdcage.
July and August are peak season.
Avoid all seaside resort cities.
Avoid all big cities.
A recommended destination is Perugia in Umbria, the chocolate city of Italy. It's only an hour's drive to Assisi, the second largest Catholic holy city in the world.
At the same time, Festival di due mondi in Spoleto and the ancient Roman aqueduct are highly recommended in the same region.
For some reason, the Byzantine stronghold of Ravenna's dreamlike mosaic murals are not crowded with tourists at this time, and it is worth visiting.
September
Head towards the seaside resort. The large crowds of summer vacationers have dispersed, but the weather is still pleasant.
At this time, it's good to go to Capri, Rome, Cinque Terre, Amalfi (of course, also avoid the National Day crowds starting from the end of September).
Of course this September, I won't miss the concerts of Anne-Sophie Mutter, the London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Bavarian State Opera in Dolomiti, where the world's top orchestras meet the most beautiful autumn scenery of mountains.
October
The vast Alps in Italy gradually enter autumn, with few crowds and intoxicating autumn colors.
The beauty of the northern lake area is beyond words.
Apart from Como, of course there are Stresa and Varese by Lake Maggiore, go visit one of Italy's most beautiful gardens on the beautiful island.
The white mountain city of Ostuni in the Puglia region is enchanting, while Genoa and Turin are both great places to visit.
The best grape harvest season is approaching, so let's go to Barolo in the Piedmont region and the Barberesco production area to get drunk and not go home.
On the plain of Bohu River, Mantova is shining brightly at this moment.
In the south, not to mention, the sea water at Costa Smeralda in Sardinia is blue and transparent at this moment.
November
For me, November is the best month to visit the main island of Venice.
After the departure of a large number of tourists, Venice in the dense fog of the Adriatic Sea is a stunning dreamland that should not exist in this physical world.
When the weather is good, Trieste, the former Austro-Hungarian Empire's seaport, is a charming city full of mix and match. At this time, you should come to the Illy Coffee headquarters for a cup of coffee.
Then, of course, it's Alba's journey to search for white truffles.
In the countless sparkling lakes in the north, I would recommend going to another lesser-known lake,
In the autumn scenery, Villa Crespi, a Michelin two-starred restaurant by Lake Orta, is a great place to enjoy the warm autumn sun.
December,
The northern ski season begins,
The Christmas market in the capital of South Tyrol, Bolzano, is like a dream.
Southern Italy, the filming location of the latest 007 movie, Matera, is worth staying for a few nights.
In Gargano, Puglia, now is the best time to admire the spectacular white limestone by the blue sea.
On the beautiful small town on the white limestone cliff, every scene is like a movie.
In fact, this is also the filming location for countless movies.
The Campi Flegrei area near Naples is one of the holy places for hardcore archaeologists and history enthusiasts,
Compared to the crowds in Pompeii, here is quieter and more local.
I have to stop here, the list can go on and on endlessly.
However, nothing compares to experiencing it firsthand.
May Day holiday, please look forward to my first tour of Italy this year.
1. We won't go to any popular tourist attractions that you've been to with a tour group. Many places you haven't even heard of the name.
2. Hike in the most beautiful Alpine region (not in Switzerland), drink coffee under the warm sun, and admire the magnificent mountain scenery.
3. A typical day in the schedule would look something like this:
I will take you to see the only vineyard in the Venetian islands, cross a bridge, and you will arrive at the colorful island of Burano. We can enjoy the beautiful and peaceful night after the tourists have left.
The restaurant where we are going to eat is where Hemingway wrote his novel "The Old Man and the Sea" by the river and in the woods.
4. Another day in the schedule:
After visiting the mountain museum designed by Zaha Hadid, we went to the Chinese restaurant on the next mountain top. This restaurant is actually popular because of its appearance, but the chef team is trained by Norbert Niederkofler, the only Michelin three-star chef in South Tyrol.
After dinner, before starting the hike, you can also visit the neighboring mountain photography museum.
5. Along the way, we will visit more than 10 United Nations natural and cultural heritage sites.
6. Italy's nature, art, outdoor activities, culture, history, cuisine, and wine.
