A Taste of Sofia: The Street Food I Found Along the Way

Sofia turned out to be a great city for eating without making a big plan. My mornings usually started with banitsa, a flaky pastry filled with salty white cheese. I found it hard to walk past a bakery once I caught that buttery smell coming from the oven. For a proper local food stop, I headed to Zhenski Pazar (Women’s Market), where the stalls sell everything from fresh produce to grilled snacks. I tried kebapche, a juicy grilled minced meat sausage, best enjoyed with bread and a little lyutenitsa, a smoky tomato and pepper spread. Nearby, Central Market Hall was worth exploring for Bulgarian cheeses, pastries, and other bites under one roof. I also wanted to try mekitsi, fried dough that makes a satisfying snack, especially with something sweet on the side. For a quick drink, I gave ayran, a salty yogurt drink, a chance it was refreshing after walking around. If you have a sweet tooth, look for baklava at the small pastry shops around the city centre. I’d finish the day wandering Vitosha Boulevard, grabbing a casual bite and watching Sofia carry on around me.
