Sri Lanka | Mirissa Whale Watching Guide

An unexpected delight in Sri Lanka is encountering orcas and fin whales in Mirissa, with dolphins swimming alongside. Being close to nature in the ocean makes you feel as free as they are, capturing heartwarming moments. Here are some tips for whale watching in Mirissa: 🌟 The scenic route from Galle to Mirissa offers views of stilt fishermen, and for about 4000 rupees, you can take photos with them. The fish market is full of freshly caught seafood, and the local fruit market is a must-visit, especially for pineapples. 🌟 The night before staying in Mirissa, don't miss the sunset over the coconut grove, which requires a short 10-minute hike up a hill. 🌟 Mirissa has many restaurants, including a few Chinese ones, but the seaside barbecue bar is highly recommended for seafood, music, and a relaxing drink by the sea. 🌟🌟 Whale watching boat options: A. Large boats 🚢, with varying sizes and prices around 350-450 RMB per person, including breakfast, departing early at 5:00 AM. The higher vantage point may offer better views, but many people get seasick. B. Chartering a yacht ⛵️, which we did, costs $100 per person for a group of six. Departing at 7:00 AM, it includes breakfast. Although more expensive, the yacht is faster, less likely to cause seasickness, and allows for quick maneuvers to get closer to dolphins and whales. The trip lasts about 5 hours, and you can tip for extra time if desired. 🤩🤩 🌟 Four major whale watching spots: No1 Mirissa, Southern Sri Lanka, the most popular from November to April, mainly blue and sperm whales. No diving is allowed from any boat. No2 Trincomalee, Eastern Sri Lanka, famous like Mirissa, from March to October, with many sperm whales, and diving is allowed. No3 Hikkaduwa, south of Colombo, less known, available year-round, with fewer boats, blue and sperm whales, and dolphins. No4 Kalpitiya, north of Colombo, from November to April, with poor infrastructure, mainly blue whales. #OffTheBeatenPath #Travel #SriLanka #MirissaWhaleWatching #MirissaBeach #Diving #Orcas #Vacation #MyTravelDiary
