The ancient city of Taiyuan has a tumultuous history. Jinyang Ancient City is the old city of Taiyuan, which was built in the middle and late Spring and Autumn Period (497 BC). It was once the capital of the State of Zhao during the Warring States Period, the accompanying capital of the Northern Qi Dynasty, the capital of the Northern Han Dynasty, and the capital of the Tang Dynasty. It existed for more than 1,700 years and was a famous metropolis in ancient northern China until it was burned down during the Northern Song Dynasty. In 979 AD, Emperor Taizong of Song, Zhao Guangyi, personally led an expedition to Taiyuan, annihilated the Northern Han regime, and ended the separatist situation of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms. After occupying Taiyuan, Zhao Guangyi believed that Jinyang had the aura of a king. Because most of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms originated in Shanxi, and Jinyang was the capital of Shanxi, he first set the city on fire, which was said to have burned for three years, and then dug a river to flood the city, completely destroying Jinyang Ancient City. The Ming Taiyuan County City (0.86 square kilometers) was built during the Ming Hongwu period. Although its scale was less than one-twentieth of that of Jinyang Ancient City (20 square kilometers), it inherited and displayed the history and culture of Jinyang and was a continuation of the 2,500-year-old Jinyang Ancient City. In the early years of the Republic of China, the ancient city of Taiyuan was well preserved. Later, it was bombed by Japanese invaders, Yan Xishan ordered people to demolish the walls and buildings to build bunkers and gun towers, pigsties were built during the People's Commune period, the Four Olds were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, and residential houses, schools, and factories were built during the new rural construction period... The ancient city was continuously subjected to destructive damage. It was not until 2013 that the renovation project officially started. With a huge investment of more than 30 billion yuan and a construction period of eight years, the ancient city of Taiyuan was completed and officially opened to the public on May 1, 2021. This year, with the release of the New Year's film "Man Jiang Hong", the ancient city, where the film was shot, has become popular. The ancient city has become a popular place for residents and tourists in Taiyuan and surrounding areas to check in and relax.
