Tahoe Ski Resort Heavenly Experience

Tahoe is about a four-hour drive from the Bay Area, but traffic on Friday afternoons can extend this time. If it snows, snow tires or chains are necessary, though all-season four-wheel drives are usually fine in good conditions. Heavenly is located in South Lake Tahoe, offering convenient lodging and dining options. A long gondola ride from the base takes you to the top where the ski trails are, and you need to take lifts to access different trails. The gondola ride lasts about 10 minutes and offers stunning views of Lake Tahoe, especially on clear days and at sunset. Non-skiers can also purchase tickets for sightseeing, with a viewing platform midway for photos. As a beginner snowboarder, I found Heavenly not very suitable for novices. Here are some insights: 1. At the gondola exit is the Magic Carpet area, with two short beginner trails that require boarding. Many people fall, causing long queues. One trail has a gentle slope with turns, while the other is steeper at the start but flattens out. 2. Nearby lifts lead to two green trails (Big Easy & Easy Street), which I found unsuitable for beginner snowboarders due to their flat sections that make it hard to move if you brake early. However, they are better for beginner skiers, being longer and having more turns than the Magic Carpet. 3. There are no nearby green trails! A distant green trail reportedly requires navigating a blue trail to reach it. Some who tried the blue trail noted its stunning views of the lake but found it narrow and challenging for beginners who struggle with tight turns. In summary, Heavenly is a scenic resort, ideal for sightseeing via gondola or enjoying tubing activities even if you don't ski. The trails are more suited for beginner or intermediate skiers and advanced snowboarders, with busy periods from 11 AM to 2 PM, even on non-holiday weekends.
