The majestic Nanshan Temple and Youguo Temple

Among the various temples within Mount Wutai, Nanshan Temple and Youguo Temple are less known, yet they are incredibly magnificent. Connected to each other, they are situated on a steep slope at an altitude of 1700 meters. These temples were once imperial monasteries during the Yuan dynasty and were expanded during the Ming and Qing dynasties. At first glance, the halls of Nanshan Temple resemble the cave dwellings of Shanxi's local residences rather than a monastery, giving off a worldly vibe. Continuing straight up 108 steps from Nanshan Temple, you reach Youguo Temple, which stands high and commands an impressive presence. Both temples feature exquisite stone carvings and clay sculptures that are vivid, masterful, and grand. Standing in front of the highest stone archway, facing the undulating green mountain peaks, the view is breathtaking. At dusk, the deep and solemn chanting from Youguo Temple resonates, spreading in circles beyond the temple, from the ethereal Buddhist realm within the mountains to the tangible, worldly realm beyond.
