The ancient temple Fukui Kichijouzan, which Jobs and Cook specially visited
🚌 From Fukui Station East Exit No. 1 bus stop, there is roughly one bus per hour, and the ride takes 30 minutes. The fare is 750 yen for adults and 380 yen for children. Only one-way tickets are sold. Admission is 700 yen for adults and 350 yen for children.
🎫 Return tickets can be purchased at the Inoue store.
You can also spend 10,000 yen to stay at the temple and experience zazen and vegetarian meals, but you need to make a reservation with the temple in advance.
Eihei-ji in Fukui Prefecture, Japan
Sought shelter in the vast temple complex of Eihei-ji, a Buddhist temple in Fukui founded in 1244 by Dōgen Zenji, the monk who promoted Zazen meditation in Japan. The rain somewhat mellowed down the summer heat although you could still feel the high humidity. The temple complex is up to now used as a training ground for monks. Had the chance to meditate silently by sitting on the benches scattered around the temple and taling in the sound of raindrops…

The temple like so many in Japan is set on a hill and involves climbing stairs, and you take your shoes off and explore from inside the whole time. The buildings are big, beautiful and very interesting and there is a peacefulness about the place as you gaze out on the huge trees surrounding it, which is I guess, the plan in a Zen temple. There were not many people there during out visit and no tour groups, so perhaps we were just lucky. There is a very good English leaflet that gives information on the main buildings that you enter and those you can only observe, and as this is a monastery you will also likely see monks although you are asked not to photograph them.
The reception hall which is modern, has the most spectacular ceiling with paintings of birds and flowers by important Japanese artists, but even the other older buildings which are far less ornate have a beauty to them, and I was so pleased that I made the effort to visit.
