Sandu'ao, Ningde, Fujian | Home of the Yellow Croaker.
| Home of the Yellow Croaker. Sandu'ao is located in the southeast of Ningde City, Fujian Province, and is the "gateway and throat of the five counties" along the coast of eastern Fujian. It consists of 5 single islands and a Cheng'ao Peninsula, 14 islets, 17 reefs, 5 tidal flats, and Guanjingyang and Fudingyang. It is a rare natural harbor in the world that can accommodate ships of tens of thousands of tons.
Sandu'ao is still a relatively niche scenic spot, with little information available online and unclear signs on the island.
There are two places that are confusing:
1⃣How to find the attractions 2⃣Pier boarding point
▫I thought the island was not big, so I followed the people on the same boat, but I made a series of mistakes. The map on the island was not very useful, so I asked the locals for a shortcut, and I recorded it for future reference.
▫The shortcut to the church is a staircase, and it takes 5-10 minutes to reach the Catholic Church.
.
🚢Transportation: Jin Shetou - Sandu'ao Pier (about 30 minutes)
▫Jin Shetou: 8:15, 9:30, 10:00, 13:00, 14:15, 16:45
▫Sandu'ao: 7:00, 7:30, 9:00, 12:00, 12:30, 16:00
💰Adult: 20, Child: 10, 10 yuan increase during the New Year.
▫Jiaotou Pier: From 6:30 am to 4:30 pm, 💰ticket price is 10 yuan, about 15 minutes. There are minibuses at Jiaotou Pier to Mindong Square. (I was afraid of missing the last boat, so I made a strategy, but I didn't practice it)
.
📍Jin Shetou Pier, take a taxi to "Zai Matou BBQ Camp"
The parking lot next to it is the Jin Shetou Pier
⚠️Pay attention to the route when returning, don't get on the wrong boat
.
👀Highlights:
There are three main attractions on the island: Catholic Church, Luocuo Monastery, Monastery, and Fuhai Customs Tax Office.
The master of Guiling Temple is truly a master of landscaping
Fuan is very interesting, on one side there is a strong sense of human life, and on the other side, it is the county with the most monks in the country. There are more than a hundred temples in 18 towns. It seems that the imperial edict of Emperor Lizong of the Song Dynasty, 'Bestow five blessings to bring peace to the county,' is well recognized by the masters.
Although I found many temples interesting, time was limited, so I only visited Guiling Temple, which is the favorite of Buddhist youths. It is indeed quite special. People say it is full of wabi-sabi style, but I think it is more of a Zen simplicity. Beauty in imperfection, simplicity in the grand scheme, the light and texture of time hidden in the ruins, yet more lively and dynamic than the extreme desolation beauty advocated by wabi-sabi. The master who designed this place must have seen all the beauty in the world and found peace in a grain of sand, experiencing the changing seasons and finding beauty all around. In the small courtyard of the temple, one can listen to the wind and rain, observe the sun, moon, and stars, and contemplate the truths they wish to understand.
It started raining just as I arrived at the temple. I saw the master diligently cleaning, and I didn't want to disturb him, so I wandered around the outskirts. I found that every small scene here was designed, with good calligraphy everywhere, and the decorations were all natural and simple handmade items. Perhaps it is meant to convey that each small item made from 'scraps' contains the principle of everything from nothing?
The most interesting are the various stone Buddha towers, each with an introduction and explanation, like a small Buddha tower exhibition park. Just seeing this made the drive up the mountain worthwhile.
Although the current Guiling Temple is new, it is said to have traceable origins. Guiling Temple is in Guiling Village, which had inhabitants even before the Tang Dynasty. It became a village during the reign of Emperor Zhaozong of the Tang Dynasty and was once an official post road and important material distribution center from Fuan to Shouning, known as 'Wharf City.' Later, because the shape of Xiufeng Mountain outside the village resembled a giant turtle, it was renamed Guiling Village. The village has a temple originally named Qinyuan Temple, built during the Xiantong period of the Tang Dynasty. It was later renamed Guiling Temple along with the village. Although the ancient relics are no longer traceable, the historical inheritance still holds its significance.
During the Qingyuan period of the Song Dynasty, Zhu Xi once came to Guiling Temple to give lectures, making the temple famous. Today, the remnants of the Tang and Song styles in Guiling Temple are probably the best interpretation of its history.
tips: Transportation is inconvenient, suitable for self-driving. You can park at the village entrance.
The temple does not require an entrance fee, and there is a tea room and vegetarian meals available.
An ancient village named Lian Village, conferred by an emperor
Lian Village is located 30 kilometers southwest of Fu'an City, along the provincial road from Saiqi to Pucheng. It is quite famous, situated on the midstream banks of Musai Creek in Xitan Town. It was once a renowned ferry crossing, hence the name Shiji Jin. It was a major commercial hub in the Eight Min region, with boats coming and going like crucian carp crossing the river. The streets and alleys were bustling for a time. The surging waters of Musai Creek flow from the southeast of the village into the sea, connecting to Xianshi Village in the north and Xitan Town in the south, surrounded by water to the east and backed by mountains to the west. This commercial port in the eastern Fujian region is a small plain formed by the alluvial deposits of Musai Creek.
The village is surrounded by mountains and water, lush with vegetation, with fields like embroidery and islets like green carpets. Lian Village in Xitan Town is the hometown of Xue Lingzhi, the first jinshi (successful candidate in the highest imperial examinations) of Fujian. Xue Lingzhi served as the Zuobuque and concurrently as the Taizi Shijiang. He was known for his integrity, and his student, Emperor Suzong of Tang, named the village 'Lian Village'. Lian Village has a rich literary tradition. Since the Tang and Song dynasties, it has produced 33 jinshi, and even witnessed the phenomenon of 'one family with five jinshi, father and sons, brothers all achieving high ranks', which became a celebrated story.
In Lian Village, ancient official roads can be seen everywhere, composed of three longitudinally parallel stone slabs, with small pebbles meticulously inlaid between the slabs, creating a beautiful and unique design.
Imagining the scene back then when civil and military officials returned home in glory, either riding horses or sitting in sedan chairs, with villagers lining the roads to welcome them, what a magnificent sight it must have been. Walking here, one can feel the warmth of history and listen to the echoes of time.
The ancient architecture of Lian Village is constructed from bottom to top, using materials such as stone, brick, and wood, with a heavy base and a light top, adhering to the natural growth pattern and embodying communication with life and nature. It reflects the respect and love of the ancients for nature. The solemn ancestral halls, the clear waters, the mottled ancient roads... every brick, stone, plant, and tree in Lian Village is imbued with a serene ancient charm.
The ancient village, the long ancient official roads, although the walking scenery has gone far, the charm of this village, with its distant mountains and nearby waters, leaves behind a lingering fragrance.
Tips: It is recommended to drive yourself. From Xiaobaishi Town, Xiaoqi Village → Xitan Town, Lian Village → Shekou Town, Tangyang Village, spend a leisurely day and savor it with your heart.
Very worth a visit, the stunning scenery of Dongchong Peninsula in Xiapu
In the southeast of Xiapu, there is a huge and narrow peninsula, shaped like an arm, stretching from the land to the East China Sea and then folding back. It shelters many villages in the six townships of Sandu'ao and Xiapu's 'Nanshang' between Xiapu, Fu'an, Jiaocheng, and Luoyuan. This is the Dongchong Peninsula.
At the southernmost tip of the Dongchong Peninsula, there is an ancient village called Dongchong Village. The Dongchong Peninsula is named after Dongchong Village at its southern end. It echoes the prominent part of the Jianjiang Peninsula in Luoyuan, Fuzhou, with the closest point being less than 3 kilometers, forming a huge circular embrace. The sea area embraced within is the famous Sandu'ao.
Dongchongkou is the only outlet to the sea in Sandu'ao, 0.8 kilometers long from east to west and 0.6 kilometers wide from north to south, facing Luoyuan across the sea. Historically, Dongchongkou held significant positions in transportation and national defense. During the Qing Dynasty, a commander was stationed here with troops for defense. A customs office was established, ranking alongside the regular customs offices in Fuzhou and Xiamen. During the Republic of China period, customs institutions were still stationed here.
Qilin Mountain is located to the east of Dongchongkou. It is named after a stone on the mountain that resembles a qilin (a mythical creature). It is a non-scenic spot in Shatang Natural Village of Dongchong Village, Beibi Township. The mountain is filled with various strange rocks, some towering into the clouds, some lying across the path like barriers, and some stacked in layers resembling standing figures. Qilin Mountain is surrounded by the sea on three sides, making it an excellent spot to view the natural scenery of Dongchongkou.
A trail has been built along the winding terrain of Qilin Mountain, with viewing platforms set up along the way for tourists to enjoy the sea view of Dongchongkou from different angles. A parking lot has been built at the entrance of the Qilin Mountain trail to provide parking for self-driving tourists, standardizing the traffic issues of non-scenic spots.
Walking around the mountain, climbing to the top of the reef cliff, leaning on the railing and looking far, the sky is blue with rolling gray clouds, the sea is blue connecting to the horizon. Except for the ridge, many mountain shadows can be seen at the junction of the sea and sky. Some isolated islands hang like hats, and some low hills stretch into lines, appearing near or far like a floating fairyland. Looking down from the ridge, it gradually lowers and extends into the sea like a green dragon entering the water, surrounded by waves singing joyfully. Both slopes of the mountain are dark green, lush with Taiwan acacia trees full of bright yellow flowers, bursting with vitality.
Coastlines, fishing villages, forests, beautiful scenery awaits you at every turn. Like a fairytale peninsula, there are no crowded people here, only towering green peaks, winding coastlines... wonderful fairyland scenery waiting for you to discover.
Tips: It is recommended to drive yourself. Starting from Ningde City, Fujian, head north for an hour. Exit at the Xiapu highway exit, and go straight along the main road. The road becomes narrower and more winding. Amidst the mountains and waters, a vast blue sea suddenly leaps into view, with fishing rafts in patches, sand gulls gathering, and hundreds of boats competing. Here, the mountains are pierced by the sea; the sea is surrounded by mountains. The mountains and sea are in close combat, with golden spears and iron horses, stirring the soul—this is the Dongchong Peninsula.

Fuan Light Luxury Hotel is on the list, and the surrounding facilities are quite complete
Vienna Hotel is a national chain hotel. This time we came to Fuan to play, and we chose their hotel. They only have one store in Fuan, and the hotel hasn't been open for long, so the furnishings inside are relatively new, and the stay experience is quite strong.
🏨Hotel Name: Fuan Vienna Hotel
📍Hotel Address: No. 6-1, Fuchun Avenue, Banzhong Township, Fuan City.
The hotel is quite large, with a big parking lot at the entrance, and the stay is free. The first floor is the rest area and the front desk. The service attitude of the young ladies at the front desk is very good, and the check-in process is very fast.
We booked a deluxe twin room. The overall area of the room is not large, but it is very clean, and the bedding is really comfortable to sleep on.
The overall decoration style of their hotel is relatively light luxury. If breakfast is not included, the room we booked is less than 300 yuan, which is very cost-effective.
There are many places to play around the hotel, such as Tianma Mountain Park, Banzhong Forest Park, Fuchun Park, and Lianchi Square, all within 5 kilometers.
There are also many internet-famous restaurants around, which are very suitable for staying here and then going out for a walk and eat.
Rest and Get Stuff Done

A Must-Visit Travel Guide to Chayang Ancient Street in Fuan
Everyone has an old street in their memory,
which starts with bustle and ends with silence, stretching through time.
Chayang Ancient Street in Fuan, carrying a century of history and serving as a hub for water and land transportation and a distribution center for goods, is like a container that condenses the essence of the city's stories. Every detail, every corner, every street lamp, adds layers of intriguing stories to the timeline.
This is where Zhu Xi, the master of rationalist philosophy, passed through, and the hometown of the renowned philosopher Huang Gan. The national hero and famous anti-Japanese general Huang Chuan was born here. Not only does it have more than a hundred historical buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, but it was also a hub for revolutionary information in Eastern Fujian.
It is said that 'folk customs are rooted in the community, and folk culture cannot be separated from the marketplace.' The first stop for newcomers to Fuan is Dongda Road, a street of folk culture. Although it has shed its old look to reveal a new face, the strong sense of life is still palpable. This street, less than 300 meters long, gathers more than 60% of Fuan's gold and silver jewelry, cheongsams, dragon and phoenix gowns, and other shops, making it a true hub for folk handicrafts. Despite its small size, it has everything one could need.
Stepping into Yangtou Street and Chayang Ancient Street feels like traveling back in time. Compared to the bustling crowd of Dongda Road, this place has an added tranquility. Today, the ancient street is even more charming, with wedding customs, silverware making, and the culture of wedding attendants, each an intangible cultural heritage finding its space here, continuing the prosperity and charm of the old street.
If you also come to Fuan, could we have the honor of meeting and enjoying together the feeling of walking on the bluestone pavement, where the silence has a particularly solid sensation?

Fujian Fuan's century-old earth building ancient village - Dakeng
Century-old ancient village - Dakeng, Dongqi Village, Fuan, Fujian, an ancient village composed of earth building architecture, with hundreds of years of history. The village is built on the hillside, with dozens of earth and wood houses built according to the mountain, facing the bay, with a wide view and an excellent location.
Now there are only a dozen elderly people living in the village, and other villagers have moved to the city. The children of the elderly have also moved to the city. They are unwilling to live in buildings and are still accustomed to the earth houses and the surrounding environment here. According to the elderly, there were more than 400 people in the village at its most prosperous time, and the whole village was descendants of the same family, all surnamed Sun.
The structure of the earth buildings in the village is almost the same, in the form of a quadrangle, not small in scale, and they were all considered mansions at that time. Most of them are two stories high, with the lower part built with stone blocks as the foundation of the house, and the upper part is an earth and wood structure. Although many have been ruined, the past glory is still visible.
Various vegetables are grown on the open space in front of and behind the houses, and the elderly are self-sufficient. When visiting the village, the elderly will also enthusiastically invite to eat, no admission fee, no consumption.
