During the Eastern Han Dynasty, 14-year-old Cao'e jumped into the river to search for her father who had drowned. Five days later, she emerged from the river holding her father's body. In gratitude, later generations renamed the Shun River to Cao'e River. Cao'e Temple was first built in 151 AD, with the current buildings reconstructed in 1936. Cao'e most likely was a real person. The "Biographies of Exemplary Women" in the Book of the Later Han records that the county magistrate Du Shang once erected a stele for her, with the inscription written by Handan Chun. For thousands of years, the temple has never ceased to be a place of worship. Since the Song Dynasty, successive emperors have continuously bestowed titles upon her, from "Spirit Filial Lady" to "Spirit Inspired Lady." These titles and place names have been passed down to this day, proving that this story is not entirely fictional. As for the part about her jumping into the river and emerging holding the corpse, that plot is too extraordinary and seems more like a folk legend embellished by later generations. Lu Xun wrote a poignant detail in "Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Dusk": Cao'e and her father's bodies initially surfaced face to face, but passersby laughed and said it was improper. Hearing this, the bodies sank again and when they resurfaced, they were back to back. Lu Xun’s words reveal the truth: this is not mythology but human social customs. Even a 14-year-old girl and her father, after death, were subject to the scrutiny of the ritualistic society. The charm of ancient architecture lies not only in craftsmanship but also in the ethics and human emotions behind it. Cao'e’s story is on one hand a pure and true expression of familial love and devotion, and on the other, a reflection of the oppressive moral discipline that modern people find stifling. Times change, interpretations diversify, and the truth or falsehood of the story becomes less important. Cao'e Temple is famous for the Four Wonders of Jiangnan: carvings, murals, couplets, and calligraphy. The most impressive to me were the carvings. Beams, pillars, window lattices, and brackets are almost all carved. The wood, stone, and brick carvings are intricate and exquisite, with clear layers of round, openwork, and relief carving. The opera stage is carved with the story of Liang Zhu, the corridors depict Cao'e jumping into the river, the water ripple patterns are delicate, the Eight Immortals’ magical instruments are as small as grains of rice, and the facial expressions of the figures are vivid and detailed, as if if you look up and call to them, they would lower their heads and chat with you. The opera stage’s caisson ceiling is spiral-shaped, with hundreds of carved floral components layered and converging, all wooden without a single nail. Under the eaves of the main hall are three layers of hollow wood carvings, with a depth of five to six layers. In front of the mountain gate stand four dragon pillars, with distinct scales and imposing presence, a craftsmanship masterpiece. The murals in the long corridor tell Cao'e’s life story like a comic strip. The couplet "Failing to enter the temple to honor my father is a minor matter; pleasing my parents with the right way means I need not bow" reflects Taoist insight. The Yecheng Archaeological Museum and the Yecheng Museum are two separate locations. The Yecheng Archaeological Museum is free to visit and has two floors. The central exhibit on the first floor is the museum's prized possession: the Northern Qi Dynasty Pagoda. The first exhibition hall on the first floor showcases the finest Buddhist statues from the Northern Wei period. The second exhibition hall on the first floor displays Buddhist statues from the Eastern Wei period (a transitional period). Even within the relatively short history of the Eastern Wei Dynasty (just over a decade), there are numerous exquisite statues. The craftsmanship combines painting and sculpture. It reminds me of the paintings on the marble slabs unearthed in Pompeii. The white horse's muzzle is highly relief-like. The three lions supporting the pedestal are of Indian style. During this period, the Bodhisattva of Contemplation moved from back to front. The Maitreya statue made by a group of women was funded and commissioned by them. The pedestal features six divine kings, among whom the elephant king and the pig king spitting out a jewel are particularly unique; a small monkey hangs from a tree. The second floor houses the museum's highlights, showcasing Buddhist sculptures from the Northern Qi period. Many exquisite Buddhist sculptures in the Ye City style can be seen. The third exhibition hall features Northern Qi Buddhist sculptures (at their peak). Technically, it demonstrates masterful use of both round and openwork carving. Of the dozen or so statues of this type, the composition of the double Bodhi tree is particularly noteworthy. It combines the image of a prince in meditation with traditional elements commonly found behind Buddha statues, such as dragons, pagodas, flying apsaras, and garlands, ultimately forming this entirely new style. This museum is small, only two floors, and during the New Year period, there were few visitors, so we almost had it to ourselves. It mainly displays archaeological findings from Ye City as the capital during the Eastern Wei and Northern Qi periods (534-577 AD). Especially tomb culture, such as tomb figurines and ancient tomb murals. Royal noble tomb unearthed ceremonial figurine groups Cavalry, civil officials, musicians, and Hu ethnic figurines unearthed from the tombs of Princess Ruru, Gao Run, and others form the "Northern Dynasty small terracotta warriors." Speaking of tomb figurines, they actually reflect social progress. As early as the Shang Dynasty, the practice of "human sacrifice" was very common. By the Western Zhou Dynasty, it was officially prohibited.
